1 . My phone is showing that little red low-battery bar, so I need to plug it in immediately or else lose my connection. What if I didn’t recharge — no, that would stress me out.
The 2022 American Psychological Association annual survey on stress showed a similar flashing red alert: More than a quarter of US adults are feeling overwhelmed by stress — paralyzed, even numb.
A study suggests that when people are under chronic stress for years, our mitochondrial enzymes (线粒体酶) weaken and our cells become prematurely aged.
Immerse yourself in green. Being in crowded and busy places sends our bodies signals of danger.
The bottom line is that we can break our daily stress habits and create more energy. We can feel ease and balance by letting go of unconscious stress. Life is short. It’s even shorter while living on half a battery.

3 . Just being smart doesn’t mean someone will be successful. And just because someone is less smart doesn’t mean that person will fail. That’s one take-home message from the work of people like Angela Duckworth.
She works at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Like many other researchers, Duckworth wondered what makes one person more successful than another. When digging deeper, Duckworth found that the people who performed best shared a quality (品质) independent of smarts. They had what she now calls grit (毅力). Duckworth developed a set of questions to test it.
In one study of people 25 and older, she found that as people age, they become more likely to stick with a project. She also found that grit increases with education. People who had finished college scored higher in the grit test than people who quit before graduation did. People who went to graduate school after college scored even higher.
She then did another study with college students. Duckworth wanted to see how smarts and grit influenced performance in school. So she compared scores on college-entrance exams, which test IQ, to school grades and someone’s score in the grit test. Students with higher grades seem to have more grit. That’s not surprising. Getting good grades takes both smarts and hard work.
But some people counter that this grit means success. Among those people is Marcus Credé, a teacher at Iowa State University in Ames. He recently showed the results of 88 studies on grit. Together, nearly 67,000 people took part in these studies. And grit did not predict success, Credé found.
However, he thinks grit is very similar to someone’s ability to set goals, work toward them and think things through before acting. It’s a basic personality quality, Credé notes — not something that can be changed.
“Study habits and skills, test anxiety and class attendance are far more strongly connected to school grades than grit,” Credé says. “We can teach students how to study well. We can help them with their test anxiety,” he adds. “I’m not sure we can do that with grit.”

4 . Nicole Latham is a 21-year-old law student from University of Leeds. When she’s not studying for her degree, Nicole competes in weightlifting competitions. She also does a good job in karate.
On top of gym and martial arts, Nicole is also in and out of the doctor’s office. She was diagnosed(诊断) with multiple sclerosis(MS),a rare disease, a year ago. The first attack happened while she was preparing for her A-Levels, a hugely stressful time for many students. And at the time, all she thought about was: stress. But it turned out to be vertigo(眩晕) and likely the first MS attack.
Nicole carried on preparing for her exams. She sat with one eye closed to improve her vision which was damaged from her vertigo experience. That was when she decided to act and head back to the doctor’s office. She took loads of medicines, but no progress was made. Feeling something might be going wrong, she immediately went to the hospital for further examinations.
Following an MRI scan, she was diagnosed with MS. After this first attack and her MS diagnosis, Nicole didn’t experience another for a few years. But in August 2021, she had another. This attack made her left hand shake for two months. Despite the obvious challenge caused by the disease in daily life, she didn’t let it get in her way. And her goal was to show other young people with disabilities that they could live their lives and still enjoy an active lifestyle.
Today, Nicole uses her page not only to spread awareness of MS, encouraging people not to miss symptoms(症状), as she did at first, but also to show people they can live a full and satisfying life with MS. She wants to show the highs as much as the lows.

I could hear one of my classmates expressing her impatience with my slow crawl up the ladder (梯子),“If she’s afraid of heights, why would she sign up for a Bungee Jumping (蹦极) class?” My friend was at the top of the ladder, trying to cheer me up. How did I wind up on a ladder hanging above the Hudson River?
It was my friend who invited me to the Bungee Jumping class. At first, I was doubtful, but her enthusiasm and guarantees of strict safety procedures won me over.
I had been fearful of heights since primary school. Avoiding my fear of heights became second nature. I tried not to look down at balconies or staircases. I avoided traveling by plane as much as possible. I declined invitations from friends to join them on roller coasters (过山车).
But here I was, at age twenty-six, facing my fear of heights in a rather extreme way. I had come around to the idea of trying Bungee Jumping. I figured it wasn’t much different from swinging on the monkey bars as a kid. The one obstacle I didn’t expect was the ladder. In order to reach the Bungee Jumping, I had to climb up a twenty-two-foot ladder.
My friend’s distraction techniques helped to take my mind off my dangerous task. I found a rhythm and kept going. With a slow and steady (稳定的) pace, I made it to the top.
An instructor tied me to a safety belt and told me to step to the edge of the platform. I held the Bungee Jumping bar with sweaty hands, surprised that it was too thick to fix my hand around. Instead of a firm grasp, my hands were in a weak, bear-claw position.
The cheers from my classmates rang out below. An instructor reminded me of the safety rules, including the net below that would catch me at the bottom. He reminded me to listen to the directions while in the air, so I could perform well.

10 . Failing Is Better than Not Trying at All
Do you remember the last time you tried something new and failed?
Sure, there are a lot of uncertainties that come when trying something new.
Repeated failures can be very discouraging. But you don’t become a complete loser just because you failed.
Trying something new and different can be risky. Your time and efforts can be wasted when nothing happens.
