文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一些有助于缓解压力,给自己“充电”的方法。

1 . My phone is showing that little red low-battery bar, so I need to plug it in immediately or else lose my connection. What if I didn’t recharge — no, that would stress me out.     1

The 2022 American Psychological Association annual survey on stress showed a similar flashing red alert: More than a quarter of US adults are feeling overwhelmed by stress — paralyzed, even numb.     2     No wonder we are commonly fatigued (疲惫的).

A study suggests that when people are under chronic stress for years, our mitochondrial enzymes (线粒体酶) weaken and our cells become prematurely aged.     3     Here are a few ways to create that positivity and tame the beast of chronic stress.

4     We can shape our environments to protect us from constant red alerts. Our attention is attracted to threatening information, as our screens so frequently deliver. To protect your precious attention and energy stores, turn off unnecessary alerts on your devices. Create spacious breaks within the day to unplug and focus on something restorative. Shift your attention to being present, to what you can feel grateful for and to connection with others.

Immerse yourself in green. Being in crowded and busy places sends our bodies signals of danger.     5     Thus we can recharge our batteries with green space time — seek a park or gardens for sensory immersion that signals safety to our bodies.

The bottom line is that we can break our daily stress habits and create more energy. We can feel ease and balance by letting go of unconscious stress. Life is short. It’s even shorter while living on half a battery.

A.Redirect attention from threats to sources of joy.
B.Relieve yourself from tough work.
C.Stress uses a tremendous amount of energy.
D.Shift your environment according to your preference.
E.Nature facilitates the opposite, calming our minds.
F.But what if, besides recharging my phone, I took a few minutes to recharge myself?
G.The good news is, when we feel positive emotions daily, our mitochondria speed up instead, producing lots of energy.

3 . Just being smart doesn’t mean someone will be successful. And just because someone is less smart doesn’t mean that person will fail. That’s one take-home message from the work of people like Angela Duckworth.

She works at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Like many other researchers, Duckworth wondered what makes one person more successful than another. When digging deeper, Duckworth found that the people who performed best shared a quality (品质) independent of smarts. They had what she now calls grit (毅力). Duckworth developed a set of questions to test it.

In one study of people 25 and older, she found that as people age, they become more likely to stick with a project. She also found that grit increases with education. People who had finished college scored higher in the grit test than people who quit before graduation did. People who went to graduate school after college scored even higher.

She then did another study with college students. Duckworth wanted to see how smarts and grit influenced performance in school. So she compared scores on college-entrance exams, which test IQ, to school grades and someone’s score in the grit test. Students with higher grades seem to have more grit. That’s not surprising. Getting good grades takes both smarts and hard work.

But some people counter that this grit means success. Among those people is Marcus Credé, a teacher at Iowa State University in Ames. He recently showed the results of 88 studies on grit. Together, nearly 67,000 people took part in these studies. And grit did not predict success, Credé found.

However, he thinks grit is very similar to someone’s ability to set goals, work toward them and think things through before acting. It’s a basic personality quality, Credé notes — not something that can be changed.

“Study habits and skills, test anxiety and class attendance are far more strongly connected to school grades than grit,” Credé says. “We can teach students how to study well. We can help them with their test anxiety,” he adds. “I’m not sure we can do that with grit.”

1. What can we know from the first two paragraphs?
A.Grit decides how smart one might be.
B.Grit is a quality dependent (依赖的) on smarts.
C.Success has nothing to do with smarts.
D.Smart people may not succeed.
2. What might influence a person’s grit according to Angela Duckworth’s findings?
A.Lifestyles.B.Family tradition.C.Education.D.Personality types.
3. What does the underlined word “counter” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Doubt.B.Reply.C.Accept.D.Warn.
4. What is Credé’s opinion about grit?
A.It is strongly related to test anxiety.
B.It can hardly be taught in school.
C.It should be paid no attention to in teaching.
D.It can’t influence students’ school grades.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I could hear one of my classmates expressing her impatience with my slow crawl up the ladder (梯子),“If she’s afraid of heights, why would she sign up for a Bungee Jumping (蹦极) class?” My friend was at the top of the ladder, trying to cheer me up. How did I wind up on a ladder hanging above the Hudson River?

It was my friend who invited me to the Bungee Jumping class. At first, I was doubtful, but her enthusiasm and guarantees of strict safety procedures won me over.

I had been fearful of heights since primary school. Avoiding my fear of heights became second nature. I tried not to look down at balconies or staircases. I avoided traveling by plane as much as possible. I declined invitations from friends to join them on roller coasters (过山车).

But here I was, at age twenty-six, facing my fear of heights in a rather extreme way. I had come around to the idea of trying Bungee Jumping. I figured it wasn’t much different from swinging on the monkey bars as a kid. The one obstacle I didn’t expect was the ladder. In order to reach the Bungee Jumping, I had to climb up a twenty-two-foot ladder.

My friend’s distraction techniques helped to take my mind off my dangerous task. I found a rhythm and kept going. With a slow and steady (稳定的) pace, I made it to the top.

An instructor tied me to a safety belt and told me to step to the edge of the platform. I held the Bungee Jumping bar with sweaty hands, surprised that it was too thick to fix my hand around. Instead of a firm grasp, my hands were in a weak, bear-claw position.

The cheers from my classmates rang out below. An instructor reminded me of the safety rules, including the net below that would catch me at the bottom. He reminded me to listen to the directions while in the air, so I could perform well.

2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了失败总比不尝试好这个话题,以及一些可以帮助你尝试更多的方法。

10 . Failing Is Better than Not Trying at All

Do you remember the last time you tried something new and failed?    1    Failure is an important part of learning and growing. Don’t immediately give up — try as much as you can. Here are several realizations that can help push you to try more.

2    You can be filled with thoughts of what could have happened if you had only decided to try. Something good could have happened, and you will never know unless you try.

Sure, there are a lot of uncertainties that come when trying something new.     3     However, not every result is unpleasant from doing something. You have to work hard and be patient if you want positive results.

Repeated failures can be very discouraging. But you don’t become a complete loser just because you failed.     4    Every failure can show what doesn’t work so that you can try something different next time.

Trying something new and different can be risky. Your time and efforts can be wasted when nothing happens.     5    Some of the most significant gains can only be made by taking risky strategies.

It takes time to achieve success and your goal, but when you have tried everything available and nothing had happened, this is the only time you should give up and stop trying.

A.If so, don’t worry.
B.So you never know if you can be successful or not.
C.There are several reasons why you may fear failures.
D.However, we won’t know if something fruitful can occur unless we try.
E.Having a solid support system can also help you build confidence in taking risks.
F.An excellent way to help somebody keep moving forward is to treat each failure as a life lesson.
G.Perhaps the most important thing you don’t want to experience from not trying is regret later in your life.
