but   finding   an   with   Following   laughing   months   was   given   thought   extremely

After eating a diet of bread, hamburgers and spaghetti for three     1     (month), I began to miss Chinese food. Luckily, in     2     informational city like New York, I have little difficulty     3     (find) a Chinese restaurant. However, the Chinese food, which the locals consider as their favorite, is not exactly the Chinese food I enjoy in Beijing I can always find such so-called “Chinese food” as honey chicken on the menu,     4     I actually have never even heard of it before.

One day, I went to a Chinese restaurant     5     my local friends. After the meal, each of us     6     (give) a dumpling-shaped cookie. Once I bit into it, I realized something not quite right. I found a piece of paper with a message that read, “This fortune’s no good, try another.” At first I     7     (think) it must be a trick of the restaurant. When I told this to my friends, they burst out     8     (laugh) and asked, “Are you really from China?”

But it doesn’t mean there is no place in New York where I can satisfy my stomach. I always head to China Town when I     9     (extreme) miss the food of my homeland.     10     (follow) the hot and spicy smell, I can always find the most Chinese food that excites me in the city.

Unusual foods often gain cult (狂热的) followings. But it’s rare for an odorous dish to become a national     1    , which is exactly what’s happened with luosifen, whose magic has     2     over its birthplace.

Just like the durian fruit, this spiral-based rice noodle soup dish has created a buzz on Chinese social media thanks to its     3     smell. While some claim the scent is mildly sour, others say it should be     4     as a bioweapon.

Luosifen,     5     in Liuzhou, a city in China’s north-central Guangxi autonomous province,     6     rice noodles soaked in a spicy broth, topped with locally grown ingredients including bamboo shoots, string beans, turnips, peanuts and tofu skin.

For a Liuzhou     7    , beyond the initial stench, a bowl of luosifen is a mixture of rich and complicated flavors — sour, spicy, savory and juicy, which is the perfect embodiment of the vital trait of harmony in Chinese cuisine. With a historically elaborate style, Chinese people enjoy the reputation of making food tasty, appealing and colorful.

In the past, it would have been hard for conservatives to share this newly-found     8     for this strange regional dish — or even to try it. But thanks to a DIY ready-to-eat form, luosifen’s magic has unexpectedly     9     the entire country. Pre-packaged luosifen — which is     10     to as the “luxury version of instant noodles” — usually comes with eight or more ingredients in vacuum-sealed packets, and neither the quality nor the freshness has been compromised during the process.

Walking past a corner bakery, you may find yourself drawn in by the fresh smell of sweets wafting from the front door. You're not alone. The knowledge that humans make decisions based on their nose has     1     major brands like Cinnabon and Panera Bread to use the scents of baked goods in their restaurants, leading to big increases in sales.

But according to a new study, the food you ate just before your walk past the bakery may impact your chance of stopping in for a sweet     2    —and not just because you're full. Scientists at Northwestern University found that people became less sensitive to food odors (气味) based on the meal they had eaten just before. So, if you were     3     on baked goods from a coworker before your walk, for example, you may be less likely to stop into that sweet-smelling bakery.

The study found that participants who had just eaten a meal of either cinnamon buns (肉桂面包) or pizza were less likely to     4     "meal-matched" odors, but not non-matched odors. The findings were then     5     by brain scans that showed brain activity in parts of the brain that process odors was altered in a similar way. These findings show that just as smell regulates what we eat, what we eat—in turn—regulates our sense of smell.

Feedback between food intake and the olfactory (嗅觉的) system may have an evolutionary     6    , said senior and corresponding study author Thorsten Kahnt, an assistant professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. "If you think about our ancestors     7     around the forest trying to find food, they find and eat berries and then aren't as sensitive to the smell of berries anymore, "Kahnt said. So it could theoretically help facilitate (促进)     8     in food and nutrient intake.

While we may not notice the hunter-gatherer adaptation having an effect on our day-to-day decision-making, the connection between our nose, what we seek out and what we can detect with our nose may still     9    . If the nose isn't working right, for example, the feedback may be disrupted, leading to problems with     10     eating and obesity. There may even be links to disrupted sleep, another tie to the olfactory system the Kahnt lab is researching.

Drink Up - Hydrating beverages (补水饮料) that aren’t water

Our bodies are about 60% water and if we don’t get enough to drink, we can suffer extreme tiredness and headaches. So how much water do we need to drink each day? People used to believe everyone should drink 8 glasses of water a day, but experts say current research supports paying attention to your     1     needs — which can vary from day to day.

Generally, the average adult male requires about 13 cups of water a day, while the average female needs just over 8 cups. On some days, though — when it’s hot or you’re working out or taking certain medicines — you may need more.

If those     2     sound like way too much water for your taste, don’t worry. You don’t have to drink that much, and it doesn’t have to be all water. You     3     can sometimes replace plain water with these drinks:

COFFEE That’s right, coffee. A 2014 U.K. study measured the body water of subjects in two groups: one that drank 4 cups of coffee a day and the other a(n)     4     amount of water. When the amount of food intake and exercise is     5    , researchers found no significant difference in body-water levels. There is no reason that coffee can’t count toward your daily water     6    . Try to limit yourself to 3 or 4 cups max, though, to stay within healthy limits.

MILK In a 2015 study     7     in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, British researchers found that cows’ milk, both full-fat and skim, can provide humans with more water. That’s because it takes longer to digest than water,     8     the body to absorb more. Milk also supplies other nutrients that most of us need more of.

JUICE Fruit and vegetable juices with no     9     sugar are an excellent source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, which can reduce infection and help prevent age-related diseases. Natural sugars contained in juice digest more slowly than processed sugar, helping to     10     your metabolism (新陈代谢). Orange juice is slightly more hydrating than water, according to a 2015 British study.

Opposite a university campus on the outskirts of Jakarta, motorbikes line the front of Ricky Salim’s ice-cream and tea store, one of thousands of Mixue franchise owners across Asia. This Chinese firm, which built its brand selling teas and soft-serve ice-cream in smaller Chinese cities with relatively     1     average incomes, is exporting its model across South-East Asia. Its nearly 22,000 franchised stores worldwide have made it the fifth-largest fast-food chain in the world.

Part of the reason for Mixue’s success     2     in selling Asia’s favourite drink: bubble tea, a milky tea containing chewy tapioca balls. In China, the market for these     3     teas was twice that for coffee in 2021, with a $20bn turnover, according to Momentum Works, a research firm in Singapore.

As growth has slowed in China, bubble-tea brands have set their     4     on South-East Asia, where the market was worth $4bn. Several other large Chinese tea brands, including HeyTea, Nayuki Tea, ChaGee and Happy Lemon, have also moved into the region.

Yet no ready-made bubble-tea chain has     5     faster than Mixue, which opened its first store in Vietnam in 2018. By March it had around 1,500 stores in Indonesia; the firm wants to double its     6     there by the end of this year.

Unlike fancier bubble-tea brands, Mixue     7     itself as cheap and cheerful, rather than trendy. Its viral song has been translated into 20 languages and is often played     8     in its franchises. “What it took our China team ten or 20 years to figure out, we’ve been able to     9     in just one year by learning from their experiences,” says Mr. Hartanto.

Mixue’s biggest ambitions for growth are in countries with emerging economies and many young people. Yet over the past year Mixue stores have also opened in Australia, Japan, Singapore and South Korea, and the firm has     10     its trademark in markets from Europe and America to Uzbekistan. It has announced plans for an initial public offering on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. The singing snowman is coming your way.

Exploring the growth of plant-based dairy

Plant-based milk is the largest plant-based group in North America. It grew five per cent last year, with sales of plant-based dairy products     1    $2billion.

There are many reasons for the popularity of plant-based milks. As well as a(n)    2    in the number of vegans (素食主义者) and plant-based diets due to health and moral grounds, environmental     3    are also driving uptake with supporters claiming that plant milk has a lower greenhouse gas footprint than dairy production-although the overall picture is highly complex and the figures are questioned by the dairy industry. An apparent increase in the level of lactose intolerance (乳糖不耐受) in developed countries is also helping to increase demand.

The range of plant-based milks also allows for consumers to     4    their tastes and identities as cafés and restaurants open up after lockdown. As one industry analyst said earlier this year, “To choose your     5    type of plant-based milk in Starbucks seems to be a way of identifying yourself.”

While dairy milk has long been seen as a drink or a meal     6    -for example, being used as the material to make food or with cereal (谷物)-here are increasing signs thatplant-based drinks     7    those with a thicker, more yogurt-like texture (质地) or those sold in individual     8    -are being seen as a healthy snack. Research by the Brisan Group suggests that up to a third of these products are viewed as a snack, and 61 per cent are viewed as “a treat.”

Globally soy milk products     9    the most popular and they accounted for 29.5 per cent of income globally in 2019. Coconut-based drinks are one of the fastest     10    parts, predicted to increase 8.6 per cent between 2020 and 2027. Across all types of plant milk, plain flavours have the highest sales, accounting for 71.1 per cent of the total value.

Mooncake Bakers Break the Mold This Year

Mooncakes, the seasonal treat    1    by families and friends during the Mid-Autumn Festival, have become a focus of competition among pastry makers with the traditional holiday for family reunions less than a month away.

Longtime mooncake makers and newcomers are coming up    2    new tricks with new ingredients and fancy designs to lure customers. The holiday, on Oct. 1 this time around, is special this year, many think,     3    the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many mooncake advertisements that started to appear in August in supermarkets, convenience stores and online social media have highlighted new flavours, special ingredients, and exquisite packaging.

Traditional fillings such as lotus seed paste with egg yolk for popular Cantonese-style mooncakes and other common fillings    4    sweet bean paste, jujube paste and the "five kernels"(a mix of walnuts, peanuts, sesame seeds,   almonds and sunflower seeds)are not the only game in town.

This year, Xinya Cantonese Restaurant, which is popular in Shanghai for its seasonal pastries, is promoting mooncakes with mustard tuna fish floss filling and green Sichuan pepper basa fish paste.

Plant-based meat substitutes,     5    by extracting protein from plants such as soybeans and other beans, are also being used by mooncake makers. Kam Wah Gift, a bakery company, has joined in a partnership with plant—based "meat" producer Starfield to design two mooncakes—rose black truffle and matsutake mushroom with artificial meat.

Pagoda, a retail fruit chain with 4,000 outlets in China, has also joined the race with its first mooncake products featuring healthy    6    . The company claims its mooncakes have zero artificial fragrances and dyes, and use antioxidant starch to    7    preservatives.

Taste Back, a snack food startup in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, has been promoting a large mooncake inspired    8    the traditional big, thin pancake popular in Fujian Province. Ding Mao, the company's chief operating officer, said the idea is to build on the local thin pancake.

Designs are another major field of competition as mooncakes are traditionally    9    as gifts. Xinghualou, a traditional Shanghai pastry maker, joined with the Palace Museum to launch mooncakes with limited-edition cases featuring an image of a long scroll painting of the Qing Dynasty(1644-1911).

Haagen—Dazs, which entered the market with its ice—cream mooncake 22 years ago, worked with the Spanish museum Casa Batllo to use modernist designs from mosaics by architect Antoni Gaudi on the boxes for its mooncake sets.

“Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, people didn't have a proper Spring Festival this year, and we want to convey the ideas of love and connection    10    our mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival,” said James Chiu, vice-president and managing director of General Mills China. General Mills is parent company of Haagen-Dazs.

Trips to my hometown of Boyertown in eastern Pennsylvania usually involve any or all of the following: really good hotdogs, ring sausage and perhaps, as a(n)     1     gift, chocolate the size of a football.

These are the tastes of my hometown, the foods that were part of my early childhood which later became the foods I     2     for whenever I go back to visit. They connect me to another time in my life, bringing back memories of whom I was with and what I was doing when eating it.

A recent trip back was no     3    . This time, however, I chose something I had not had in more than 25 years. There is a place in town called “The Grill Shop” that serves only breakfast and lunch. It has been around for as long as I can remember. It is the size of a shoebox (小平房), with five stools at the counter and a couple of booths along the wall. A flat-top grill is     4     into the front of the space and faces the street.

From that grill come the tastiest hotdogs, which were topped with chili, onions and mustard. They come wrapped in white paper and     5     into brown paper bags, the sturdiness (牢固) of which gets tested as the chili and mustard     6     seep out (渗出) before you can finish them.

It is the best $1.75 you will ever spend. I got two, because one is a lonely number. One bite in and I was ten years old again, going there with my grandmother during summer vacations. We would get hotdogs to go and take them back to her kitchen. My grandfather would sometimes come home for lunch.

Or, we would stay there if we were lucky enough to     7     a booth. A short lunch would     8     into an hour, since my grandmother knew almost everyone in town.

Mostly,     9     Boyertown looks much like it did when I lived there. I took a walk past my old house, which looks the same, although the abandoned factory had been replaced by a(n)     10     living facility and parking lots. The Grill Shop survives, however, and for that I am thankful.

Every time a person eats something, he makes a nutritional choice. He accepts or rejects the food     1    to him at home for meals or snacks. Or he selects food for himself at many places in the community, such as supermarkets, drive-ins, restaurants, and food counters in drugstores. These     2    make a difference in how an individual looks, how he feels, and how well he can work and play.

When various kinds of food in     3    amounts is selected and eaten, the     4    are most likely to be a desirable level of health and enough energy to allow one to be as active as he needs and wants to be. When choices are less than desirable, the consequences are likely to be poor health or     5    energy or both.

More people believe that they are well     6    —that the choices they make are good ones. After all, they are not really sick, neither are they hungry. However, their nutrition is usually poor in one respect or another. Milk and milk products, such as cheeses, ice cream, buttermilk and yogurt, are often ignored. Then people may skip many fruits and vegetables, particularly those that are good     7    of vitamins A and C. These include dark green, leafy vegetables; deep yellow vegetables; and citrus(柑橘类)fruits and vegetables, such as cabbage, tomatoes, and green peppers.

Everyone has the right to choose to be uninformed about nutrition as well as to be informed. If a person believes that she is well fed, attitudes, habits and information cannot be     8    upon her.

There are life situations, however, that     9    to cause an individual to want to know how to make the best choices. For example, a young woman setting up her own apartment is for the first time     10    responsible for the household food supply. Or perhaps a young couple is starting a family and must prepare food for young children.

The Influence of Hispanic Culture on US Food Trends

Americans consume 8.2 million pounds of tortilla chips along with pounds and pounds of cheese for Nachos alone over the course of the big game weekend that only comes once a year. The same is also    1    in Avocado becoming such a popular ingredient, despite being enjoyed by US Hispanics in America for so long. Although Hispanic Culture has made many contributions to American cuisine, this influence has seen a tremendous growth only recently.

2    is the keyword in summarizing food trends. Most of the trendsetters setting the countless new food trends on social media are Millennial and Generation Z consumers. Almost 1/3 of them are Hispanic. Many of these trendsetters have grown-up or live in harmony side-by-side in    3    communities where there are many Hispanic Americans present. Even if they did not grow up eating these traditional foods in Hispanic households, they still were brought up around it and are using these foods and dishes to    4    many cultures together to make something entirely new and entirely American.

It makes sense that these consumers would dominate food trends because they would be natural influencers and trendsetters given that non-Hispanic trendsetters would be immersed in the culture of these Hispanic Millennials and Gen Z consumers by association as friends. Once again connectivity is    5    .

So what are these Hispanic Food trendsetters connecting to in the latest food trends? Both nostalgic(怀旧的)flavours and    6    approaches. Traditional Hispanic Foods have been    7    by trendsetters to Americanize the taste. They tend to make the most of popular trends by    8    delicious treats and combining them with these trends to great effect. Overall the reoccurring theme seen in all the most    9    foods is connecting back to childhood treats either they enjoyed or that their friends enjoyed and adopting them to what is popular now or combining two classics together to create a new one or coating for traditional snacks to take them to create an entirely new but familiar eating experience that engages the senses even on social media. They're coming together as Americans to both connect all of these days in the average American workweek with Hispanic American culture, food and    10    and celebrate it!
