文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了摇滚巨星、吉他手Eddie Van Halen的生平事迹。

1 . The music world lost a rock and roll superstar this week when guitarist Eddie Van Halen passed away. He was only 65 years old.

Eddie Van Halen was a founding member of the band Van Halen. He formed the group in 1974 with his brother Alex, who played the drums. Van Halen released (发行) its most popular single, the song Jump, in 1983. Jump rose to the top of Billboard Magazıne’s list of Hot 100 songs and stayed there for five weeks. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio lists Jump among its “500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll”. Eddie Van Halen released at least 15 record albums with his band over the years, selling more than 80 million around the world. In 2007, Van Halen entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Van Halen brothers were born in the Netherlands. Their father was a professional musician. Their mother was from Indonesia. In the 1950s, some Netherlanders did not support the mixed-race (混种族) marriage, so the family moved to the United States. They settled in southern California. Eddie and Alex Van Halen had to learn English in their new land. Both brothers studied piano for years before getting interested in rock and roll.

As a child, Eddie was considered musically gifted. Eddie told a reporter he did not learn to read music. He said he would watch his teacher play and memorize his moves. He also said that he never took a class on playing the guitar, although he studied under Eric Clapton for a time. His father was among the first to recognize Eddie’s guitar skill. “You’ve got it, kid,” Eddie’s father said to him early on.

Eddie’s guitar playing was hard and fast. He was energetic while performing, often jumping like an acrobat (杂技演员) as he played. He was known for the way he tapped on the guitar strings with both hands. It influenced many musicians that followed.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了科幻小说作家菲利普·K·迪克的作品预见了未来的许多事物,他的作品中的世界与今天的世界越来越接近。

2 . Writers of science fiction often feel more prescient (预知的) than others. Whether it’s the architectural and social dystopias of J.G. Ballard’s novels, or the world of E.M. Forster’s The Machine Stops, the genre is full of prescient writers dealing with ever more familiar issues.

Out of all such writers, few seem more likely to predict our times than author Philip K. Dick, who died 42 years ago. In a remarkably 30-year period of work, Dick authored 44 novels and countless short stories, adaptations of which redefined science fiction on screen — in particular Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, based on Dick’s story Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and Paul Verhoeven’s Total Recall, which took his 1966 short story We Can Remember It for You Wholesale as its source material.

Dick had a astonishing ability to predict what would happen in modern world. Celebrated science-fiction and fantasy author Stan Nicholls suggested Dick’s work was prescient because it explored the future through the then-present. “His stories foresaw the availability of the Internet, virtual reality, facial recognition software, driverless cars and 3D printing,” Nicholls said — while also pointing out that “it’s a misinterpretation that prediction is the primary purpose of science fiction.” The genre’s hit rate is actually not very good in that respect. Like all the best science fiction, his stories weren’t really about the future; they were about the here and now.”

Putting aside Dick’s ability to foresee the future we now take for granted, his most disturbing vision was of the world itself ultimately being a simulation (模拟). Dick’s reality was already a delicate and complex one. In many of his later books, the idea of reality being a façade (假象) grew as a dominant theme. “Dick argued we were existing in a simulation,” Nicholls suggested.

Whether his visions were true, as he believed, a product of small problems in the simulation or his fading mental health, one thing is for certain: the world in which the work of Philip K. Dick is celebrated today feels ever closer to the ones imagined by this most unique and exceptional of writer.

1. How does the author explain the topic in Paragraph 1?
A.By listing examples.B.By using metaphors.
C.By making a comparison.D.By introducing an concept.
2. What could be inferred from Paragraph 2?
A.Dick can predict the future precisely.
B.Some directors like to adapt Dick’s novels into movies.
C.Dick’s novels redefined what science fiction was about.
D.No one wrote more science fiction novels of our times than Dick.
3. A universal feature of all the best science fiction stories is that they _______.
A.have a high hit rateB.are good at predicting
C.focus on the presentD.explore the distant future
4. What does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?
A.Philip K. Dick had a great impact on science.
B.Philip K. Dick had traveled into the future then.
C.People don’t agree to Philip K. Dick’s prediction.
D.The world in Philip K. Dick’s works is similar to today’s world.

文章大意:本文为一篇记叙文,讲述了艺术家Sarahi Zacatelco的经历和艺术启发来源。

3 . Inside the low lighting of Gather East Rock, the smell of coffee beans swirls (打旋) through the air. Art adorns (装点) the blue walls, but one painting stands out among the others. The painting’s name is “Mother Divine”, by the artist Sarahi Zacatelco. The mother in question is a green woman, with colorful plants adorning her head and water dripping (滴下) down her neck. In every brushstroke, Zacatelco pays homage to the man who taught her how to paint: her grandfather Agustin.

Born in 1982, Zacatelco learned how to create art from her grandfather in Oaxaca. At the time, her grandfather lived with her while her mother worked. Together, the two spent hours going out to the central plaza in Juchitán, where she let her senses take over. “You can see the food, you can smell it, you can see the lady selling flowers, and you can see everything,” she recalled excitedly. When she was six years old, her grandfather gave her a piece of paper and watercolors and showed her how to put the colors on it. She hasn’t stopped making art since.

Zacatelco’s grandparents made chess pieces out of rocks and wood to sell. They also made Talavera pottery (陶器) pieces, which Zacatelco described as “a Baroque tradition” that one might see in old colonial (殖民地的) homes. She no longer has any of her grandparent’s Talavera —“the tradition was lost due to being poorly paid and a lot of effort going into each piece.”

In the 1990s, Zacatelco’s mother decided to move her family to give them a better life. She moved her children to Mexico City, then to the Bronx, and then to the Brownsville neighborhood in Eastern Brooklyn. The family moved to Fair Haven, where Zacatelco still lives, in 2001. She called it the perfect place to raise two boys and two girls. Her family did not keep any of her grandfather’s old art before he died. But his artistic spirit did not die with him. Zacatelco carries on his legacy today with her art.

1. How is paragraph 1 developed?
A.By testing an assumption.B.By giving a description.
C.By making a comparison.D.By analyzing a phenomenon.
2. How did Agustin inspire Zacatelco’s artistic spirit at first?
A.He instructed her in watercolor painting.
B.He introduced sensory experiences to her.
C.He taught her to make chess pieces out of rocks.
D.He asked her to observe his creation of pottery pieces.
3. Why did Zacatelco’s mother move her family?
A.She wanted them to live a better life.
B.She needed to change jobs frequently.
C.She found their house was too small for them.
D.She wanted to relieve the pain of losing a loved one.
4. What would be the best title for this text?
A.Art: comfort for imperfect lives
B.Baroque tradition: a dying art form
C.An artist’s first teacher: her grandfather
D.An artist’s moving experiences: sources of inspiration

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了最近的发现——梵高作品《农妇的头像》背后隐藏着梵高的自画像。

4 . Workers at the National Galleries of Scotland recently experienced quite a surprise after they X-rayed a painting by Vincent van Gogh. Hidden on the back of the painting Head of a Peasant Woman, which Van Gogh completed in 1885, was a self-portrait (自画像) of the Dutch painter. No one had ever found it.

The hidden self-portrait had been covered by glue and cardboard that had been attached to the back of the painting. “It was absolutely exciting,” Lesley Stevenson, the museum’s worker, said about the discovery. “We weren’t expecting much of the little painting when we performed the scans,” she said. But museum experts quickly changed their expectations when they looked at the X-rays. “We didn’t see much of the peasant woman, but we saw the lead white that Van Gogh used for his face showing up after the X-ray went through the cardboard,” she added.

Van Gogh painted Head of a Peasant Woman as part of a series of works focused on the working-class residents of Nuenen, a small farming community in the southern part of the Netherlands where he lived briefly in the 1880s. The woman in the painting is Gordina de Groot, a farm worker. She wears a white headpiece. In a letter that Van Gogh penned about the series in 1885 to Anton Kerssemakers, a friend, he described his excitement at his working-class subjects. “I’m working with great pleasure these days, for I would rather paint people than paint anything else,” he wrote.

Van Gogh also loved creating self-portraits, producing about 20 paintings of himself by the end of his life while he was living in Paris. Recreating his own image was a cheap way for him to practice portraiture as he didn’t have to spend money hiring models, according to a report.

Art historians at the National Galleries hope that the hidden self-portrait may help us understand the life of the artist. The museum is currently considering how to best remove the unwanted protective materials without harming the painting.

1. What can be learned about the self-portrait on the back of the painting?
A.It isn’t in very good condition.B.It describes a well-known woman.
C.It wasn’t known to exist for a long time.D.It was sold to another artist by Van Gogh.
2. What do Stevenson’s words mainly show about the discovery?
A.It was a wonderful surprise.B.It failed to meet her expectations.
C.It was the result of her great efforts.D.It deepened her understanding of Van Gogh’s life.
3. What did Van Gogh tell his friend in the letter?
A.He was encouraged to try different subjects.
B.He was glad to find his love for figure paintings.
C.He was attracted by the lifestyle of people in Nuenen.
D.He wanted to improve the living conditions of the farmers.
4. What would be the best title for the text?
A.X-rays can do harm to artworks
B.Van Gogh sent a secret message to his friend
C.Modern technology has a great influence on art
D.Van Gogh’s hidden self-portrait draws public attention

5 . Maya Lin, designer and sculptor, has created some of the most iconic works and spaces with the belief that art can address important issues. Her latest projects are no different, from museums to sculptures for Presidential centers.

Lin, 62, grew up in Ohio, the daughter of college professors who were Chinese immigrants. As a 21-year-old student at Yale University, she gained national prominence when her entry won a design competition for the new Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Her winning design — two black granite (花岗岩) walls engraved with the names of US service members who died in the Vietnam War (1954-1975) or remain missing — is considered one of the most influential in modern architecture.

Lin went on to design the 1989 Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama, and dozens of other projects globally, all with social and environmental justice in mind. She told The Wall Street Journal she uses facts in her art. She said, “I am going to present you with what the story is, but I am not going to draw the conclusion for you.” Currently underway is Lin’s plan for the new Museum of Chinese in America in New York City. Lin said she wants it to be a celebration of Chinese American stories and contributions to the country.

Lin is also designing a sculpture to honor former President Barack Obama’s mother, who died in 1995, at the Obama Presidential Center in Illinois. 文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一位名为范登的艺术家,他的生平、艺术风格以及成就。

6 .

“By removing needless details in pursuit of perfection, Van Den followed in the footsteps of many great artists, writers, composers, and painters.”

Juhani Murros made an unexpected discovery during his visits to art galleries when he worked for an organization in Ho Chi Minh City in 1990. A small still life in an unnoticeable gallery commanded the Finnish physician’s attention. “It was not an eye-catching oil painting, yet its dark, mysterious colors and the emotional tension of its disciplined composition set it apart.” Thus began a long journey of discovering the art and life of Van Den, a Buddhist of mixed Chinese and Vietnamese ancestry who studied in Paris for less than two years during the first French Indochina War.

Murros’ biography is, by necessity, brief because there is limited knowledge of the artist, mostly in oral way by family and friends. Many of his paintings did not survive the damp Southeast Asian climate nor the political chaos of his lifetime. However, the author’s research appears to be extensive, as much a years-long spiritual examination of Van Den as a historical one. The artist’s love for country life is apparent in his work, and it is said by those who knew him that he preferred to paint countryside scenes close to his heart and worked as an outsider. He is uninterested in the more elegant work of academically recognized painters. Despite these limitations, Van Den won Vietnam’s most honorable art award in 1960.

Murros gives an in-depth look into the life of this little-known unsung master. The book introduces the readers to Van Den’s art with photographs of his paintings, accompanied by short stories behind them. The book is as quiet as the artist’s work, but it is a satisfying read. Each stroke of words in the book connects to the readers; the narrative awakens the artistic spirit in each one of us, encouraging us to follow our heart.

1. What of Van Den first impressed Juhani Murros?
A.His life story.B.His painting style.
C.His birth place.D.His emotional stale.
2. What can we learn about Van Den?
A.His works are rarely available today.B.He showed great love for his country.
C.He works were of mysterious themes.D.He ever travelled in China and Vietnam.
3. Why is Murros’ biography brief?
A.Van Den’s art wasn’t well accepted.B.Murros had limited knowledge of art.
C.Murros had gained little primary data.D.Van Den’s family kept everything back.
4. Which of the following can describe this book?
A.Amusing.B.Detailed.C.Objective.D.Inspirational.

7 .

Sugar, protein and fat: if you’re good at scanning those nutrition facts on food and drinks packages, it’s thanks in large part to Burkey Belser, who is a well-known American graphic designer (平面设计师). But his work extended far beyond groceries. If you’ve noticed the Drug Facts box on over-the-counter medicines seems to be like the food label, that’s because Belser designed it, as well. He also created the yellow Energy Guide box for home appliances.

Belser’s passion for design started at a young age. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and began a journey to become a graphic designer. His exceptional talent and skill quickly gained recognition, earning him numerous awards and accolades.

Belser’s work is seen on billions of products. The nutrition fact box has been copied around the world. Creating the official food information box was a complicated process, with input from business groups and health advocates, along with Food and Drug Administration( FDA) experts. The design team worked through 35 versions before the product came out, and it was a huge success. “ That is a masterpiece of information architecture, and quite a victory for social responsibility, ” commented one Italian designer.

The nutrition label reflects Americans’ evolving (演变) relationship with food, shifting from an emphasis on vitamins and minerals to addressing obesity (肥胖) and related conditions. Belser’s work not only made an impact within the industry but also played a crucial role in effectively communicating important messages to the public.

Speaking of his success, Belser said that luck had probably played a big role. But he added, “ I’d say the willingness to work hard sets the stage to take advantage of whatever luck comes your way.”

B.It improves the public’s eating habits.
C.It makes information easily accessible.
D.It promotes the food industry’s images.
4. What was the key to Belser’s success?
A.His good luck.B.His determination.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要介绍了奥地利生物学家约翰内斯·弗里茨教导北方秃鹮重新迁徙的故事。

8 . When Johannes Fritz, an Austrian biologist, was born 56 years ago, the northern bald ibis had disappeared completely from the wild and could only be found in zoos. But Mr. Fritz has spent his working life reintroducing the birds into the wild, and an extremely important part has been teaching the young the migration (迁徙) path.

When Mr. Friz decided to lead the migration in a plane, he was laughed at. But in 2004, three years after some experiments, Mr. Fritz flew an ultralight plane slowly enough for his winged students to catch up, and led the first group from Austria to Italy. He has since led 15 such migrations. Over that time, he has rewilded 277 young ibises, many of which then started to pass the path on to their own young.

But the path he taught the ibises before is no longer workable. With climate change warming the lakes where the birds summer, they now delay (推迟) their migration to November, one month later than they did just a decade ago. And they are now reaching the Alps too late to make it over the peaks (山峰) because the rising warm air flows were too weak by November to allow the birds to fly over the mountains.

Determined to save them, Mr. Fritz decided he would teach the birds a new, safer migration path. The new path is about three times as long as their former 800 miles one directly south to Tuscany, Italy. Flying at a highest speed of 25 miles per hour, the trip is expected to take about six weeks, instead of the two to reach Tuscany.

At Lake Constance this summer, humans and birds were practicing for their long journey. Soon, they’ll fly to Andalusia in Spain, dealing with unpredictable weather along the way. But the risks are “necessary,” Mr. Fritz said. “It’s not so much a job,” he added, “but my life’s purpose.”

1. What happened to the ibises when Mr. Fritz was born?
A.They had been trained to fly.B.They had been rewilded in Italy.
C.They were migrating naturally.D.They were no longer seen in the wild.
2. Why do the ibises need to learn a new migration path?
A.They have forgotten the old path.
B.The path they took before is longer.
C.The Alps is impassable for the delayed migration.
D.The changing climate has warmed the mountains.
3. What can we know about the ibises’ new migration path?
A.It is higher than before.B.It takes about two weeks.
C.It leads directly to Tuscany.D.It is about 2,400 miles long.
4. Which of the following can best describe Mr. Fritz?
A.Inspiring but inexperienced.B.Responsible but emotional.
C.Determined and creative.D.Observant and outgoing.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文,文章介绍了人类行为学家Ian Leslie关于好奇心的观点及如何培养好奇心的研究。

9 . Curiosity — the desire to know, to discover, to learn. Inspired by curiosity, humans are found everywhere on our planet, and beyond it in space. Yet according to human behaviourist and author of Curious, Ian Leslie, although we are all born curious, not all of us bring this into adulthood, and we can lose out as a result.

As Leslie explains, curiosity shapes us from the start. By trying new things, we build knowledge, and want to know more. “We are born aware that we don’t know stuff — we want to experience and discover.” However, the contrast between childhood and adulthood is clear. “We ask 40,000 questions a year between the ages of two and five,” says Leslie — around 110 each day; adults, in comparison, ask just 20.

As we get older, we may feel hesitant about asking questions, believing this reveals gaps in our knowledge. We can become scared to share unconventional ideas for fear of criticism or misunderstanding. We can also be a victim of our success, as Leslie explains. “Once you’ve worked out how to do your job, then you don’t feel curious anymore. The need to learn goes away — in a way, curiosity has done its job. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t cultivate it.”

Leslie’s tips for cultivating curiosity begin with spending time with the experts — children. “Talk to your kids, and try to answer those weird, difficult questions they have — like ‘What is air?’ This makes you think about things you’ve taken for granted — it reawakens your curiosity in what’s around us and how we perceive the world.”

So does finding what Leslie calls an ‘informal mentor’, through work or other circles, who is happy to share their expertise, from a skill, technology, to a field of learning. “Try to think of people the way children think of adults — as sources of secret knowledge, a great store of learning you can tap into,” says Leslie.

Leslie also suggests creating a ‘spark file’ — a digital or physical notebook in which you collect interesting thoughts. “Fill it with facts you’ve come across, sentences you like, insights that strike you. Let it be random. And let it build. Over time you’ll build up a rich source of inspiration, and you’ll think, ‘Oh that’s interesting, that relates to this…’ And suddenly your mind starts firing away with new ideas and ways of thinking.”

1. According to Leslie, what happens as we get older?
A.We gradually lose our natural curiosity.
B.We are less aware of our knowledge gaps.
C.We are unwilling to let others benefit from our ideas.
D.We may think asking questions makes people foolish.
2. Which of the following sayings might Leslie agree with?
A.A day’s planning is best done at daybreak.
B.In the eyes of a lover, Xi Shi will appear.
C.A master can lead you to the door, but the rest is up to you.
D.When three people walk together, one can surely be my teacher.
3. Which of the following is a characteristic of a ‘spark file’?
A.It is carefully organized.B.It can help people connect ideas.
C.It only contains complete sentences.D.It can help people improve their memory.
4. What is the writer’s aim in this passage?
A.To prove Ian Leslie’s arguments.B.To summarise Ian Leslie’s viewpoint.
C.To question Ian Leslie’s conclusions.D.To introduce Ian Leslie’s achievements.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了雪莱的雕刻作品的来源,她为何从事雕刻这门艺术及她的作品风格。

10 . Mary Shelley bends over her latest creation. Although the carving is only half complete, the image of a waitress holding a plate of eggs comes out from the board. Of Shelley’s nearly seven hundred carvings, many show scenes with cows on farms and people in restaurants.

From memories to carvings

“My work is a visual diary, ” Shelley says. “The carvings describe things I have experienced and felt at different times in my life.”

Every one of her carvings tells a story. Many of the stories in Shelley’s woodcarvings come from memories of her childhood in a rural (乡村的) area outside of Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Shelley’s family managed a small farm. Mary was a serious girl who spent a lot of time raising animals, exploring outdoors, and reading. Although Shelley never felt especially artistic as a child, there was always an art project in the works in the Shelley household. Her grandmother painted. Her father was a commercial artist, who drew and wrote to make a living.

______

Shelley attended Cornell University and hoped to become a writer, but an unusual present took her in another direction. At age 23, she received a gift her father had made-a woodcarving of her as a girl on the farm. The gift caught her interest. After gathering boards from a building site where she worked as a carpenter, Shelley bought some tools and taught herself to carve.

Shelley soon realized that she loved the slow, thoughtful process of working with wood and painting. “A carving is like a jigsaw puzzle (拼图游戏),”   she explains. “I didn’t know how it would all fit together, but the process of solving the puzzle kept me going.”

The Shelley style

Early in her career, people hired Shelley to carve special pieces that took four or five weeks to complete. The money she received motivated her to try more complicated scenes created by carving deeper in the wood. Over time, Shelley’s art began to have its own style. In a typical Shelley woodcarving, some objects seem to reach out of the frame while others drop back, creating a feeling of depth.

1. What can we infer from the “From memories to carvings” part?
A.Art is from but beyond life.B.Life is short and art is long.
C.It is great art to laugh at your own misfortune.D.Knowledge without practice makes but half an artist
2. Which can be the best title for the second part?
A.Life in SchoolB.A Dream Come True
C.A Life-Changing GiftD.Jigsaw Puzzles and Carving
3. What made Mary take up carving?
A.The dream to be an artist in her childhood.B.Her father’s low-relief carving for her.
C.The rugs hooked by her grandmother.D.Her school life in Cornell University.
4. According to the text, Shelley’s art ______.
A.is very popularB.is very expensive
C.has simple scenesD.creates a feeling of depth
