The following are to help you find the train tickets most suited to your needs when you are in the UK.
The Student Railcard
The Student Railcard (or Young Person Railcard) is a great way to keep travel costs down. The 1/3 off train tickets can go a long way in helping you save, ideal for travelling to work, university or college. Whether you have an early morning lecture or you’re rolling home in the early hours after a night out, you can still get 1/3 off on all passenger rail services within the UK! The only requirement for this Railcard is that you need to be within the ages of 16 and 25, and able to prove it with ID.

Up to four adults and four children can use the card on big days out. Adults get 1/3 off train travel and children get a 60% discount on their fares with a Family &Friends Railcard. Children are classed as being between ages 5-15.
It can be purchased and used within 16 counties in the South East, even including the whole of London! Just remember that all users must stay together while travelling—in the same carriage and on the same train.
The Millennial Railcard
The Millennial Railcard is now available across the UK, helping “millennials” to save money on their day-to-day train ticket fares while encouraging more leisurely train travel on days off.
It is available for all who are between the ages of 26 and 30, regardless of peak or off-peak times. Costing just £30, the new Railcard can be used across the UK!
The Saver Railcard
Half off train tickets. That’s right, half! Pick up the new 16-17 Saver Railcard and let the savings pile up. It costs just £30 for the year or up until the date of your 18th birthday, making it one of the best value Raileards considering the kinds of discounts you can get.

My dad was one who never knew a stranger. He was a farmer in the Midwest and he spent his winters selling insurance and commodities (商品). Daddy could really talk up anyone and his favorite thing to do was find out their income. Once we were at Chicago O’Hare Airport. Daddy was sitting with me as I waited for my flight to Fort Lauderdale. A Russian guy sat down next to my daddy. The gentleman could not speak a word of English but that did not stop my dad. He found out his business, asking how many children he had and of course how much he made.
I used to be somewhat embarrassed by this. In the last year of my daddy’s life, I was home visiting with my husband and I was in the car with my mom. She told me a story about how she was in the doctors’ office with my daddy and how he was his usual self-talking away to the others in the waiting room. My mom was very private, so I imagine she was bothered by this as well. She said he started talking to a young man in a wheelchair who could not talk and could not move his arms or head. But my daddy kept asking the young man questions, getting him to smile in response. And he carried on like that with the disabled man till he was called back to the doctors’ office.
When the young man and his father got up to see the doctor, the father of the young man came over and shook my dad’s hand and said. “Thank you for speaking to my son. Most people just turn away when they see him.” My father ended up dying later that month, a big surprise—a sudden heart attack. Fortunately, all nine of his children had been home that summer to visit. I told this story about his love of talking at the funeral.
24. Why did the author think her dad talked to the Russian guy?A.To practice his Russian. | B.To teach him some English. |

A new study suggests that some homemade soups—made of chicken, beef or vegetables—might help fight malaria (疟疾).
Jake Baum of the Imperial College London led the research. He asked children at a London school to bring homemade clear soups that their families would make to treat a fever. The children were from many different cultural backgrounds.
The soups were then exposed to the parasite (寄生虫) that creates 99.7 percent of malaria cases in Africa, the World Health Organization, WHO, explained.
Of the 56 soups tested, five were more than 50 percent effective in containing the growth of the parasite. Two were as effective as one drug now used to treat malaria. And four soups were more than 50 percent effective in preventing parasites from aging to the point where they could infect mosquitoes that spread the disease.
Baum also noted that it was unclear which foods made the soups effective against malaria.
“If we were serious about going back and finding the...ingredient, like good scientists, we’d have to do it in a very standardized way,” he said.
The soups came from families from different ethnic histories, including Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. They had several main ingredients, including chicken, beef and green vegetables. Baum said the vegetarian soups showed similar results to the soups with meats.
Baum said his aim was in part to show children that scientific research can turn an herbal cure into a man-made medicine.
He noted the research of Dr. Tu Youyou of China. In the 1970s, she found that the herb quinhao was an effective antimalarial treatment. The herb has been used in Eastern medicine for two thousand years..
Tu’s research led to the man-made drug artemisinin, a drug now widely used to treat malaria. She won the Nobel Prize in 2015.
28. Why did Jake Baum choose children from different cultural backgrounds?A.To show that he treated all children equally. |
B.To get the number of families that made soups. |
C.To find out which kind of soup could treat a fever. |
D.To make sure the soups for research were various. |
A.About 20%. | B.99.7% |
C.More than 50%. | D.About 10%. |
A.People like putting different meats into soups. | B.Vegetarian soups can be effective as well. |
C.The meats in soups are mostly ineffective. | D.Soups are actually man-made medicines. |
A.everyone can succeed in the research of herb. |
B.the importance of Chinese traditional medicine. |
C.the long history of quinhao being used in medicine. |
D.scientific research contributes to man-made medicine. |
Two square meters of the next-generation perovskite solar cells (PSCs) would be enough to generate (产生) about as much electricity as a standard solar panel, according to the latest study.
Solar cell windows are something researchers have been working on for years, but as yet no one has really hit the sweet spot in terms of efficiency, stability and cost. The team behind the new project says they are closer than ever to doing just that.
Rooftop solar has a conversion (转化) efficiency of between 15 and 20 percent. The semi-transparent (半透明的) cells have a conversion efficiency of 17 percent, while still letting more than 10 percent of the light come in.
Central to the work is the replacement of key solar cell component (Spiro-OMeTAD to be technical) with a specially developed polymer (聚合物), based on an organic semiconductor, which increases overall stability.
That stability is important in material that is out in the sunshine all day. Add the recent efficiency increases in PSCs and you can see why this growing solar technology is becoming more and more commercially attractive.
However, you won’t be able to gaze through a perfectly clear window and get the maximum amount of energy efficiency from it—there’s still a balance to be found between opacity (不透明) and efficiency.
“There is a trade-off,” says Jasieniak. “The solar cells can be made more, or less, transparent. The more transparent they are, the less electricity they generate, so that becomes something for architects to consider.”
Even with this major step forward, it may be some time—maybe as much as 10 years—before the tech can be commercialised and scaled up. The scientists are working with business partners to try and get the solar cells included in future building plans.
“These solar cells mean a big change to the way we think about buildings and the way they function,” says Jasieniak. “Up until now every building has been designed on the assumption that windows are fundamentally passive. Now they will actively produce electricity.”
32. What advantage do solar cell windows have over rooftop solar?A.They need less research but lasts longer. |
B.They are more efficient in generating electricity. |
C.They have a spot of efficiency, stability and cost. |
D.They can let light in while generating electricity. |
A.To reduce their costs. | B.To make them more stable. |
C.To make them look more attractive. | D.To make them more energy efficient. |
A.They won’t be available on the market until 2030. |
B.They need give up some efficiency to be more transparent. |
C.They will become both more efficient and more transparent. |
D.They are considered a favorite building material by architects. |
A.Supportive. | B.Opposed | C.Doubtful. | D.Uncaring. |
Most of us, at some point in our lives, have decided we need a new look. Then, when we don’t achieve the desired six-pack within a month, we gave up the fitness plan. Fortunately, there is a way to set realistic, useful fitness goals that will keep you motivated.
Keep in mind that exercise alone won’t change your body shape.
Consider what is important to you. A lot of people want to look like someone else. That’s where a lot of goals go wrong from the outset, because they are choosing a goal based on someone else.
The personal trainer Ruby Tuttlebee advises starting small and building up. Something straightforward, such as a press-up, is a better bet than aiming for a triathlon right off the bat.
Choosing something you enjoy will help.
Keeping score is also a good idea. Keeping score gives people tangible things they can work on and helps direct their focus to keep them on track day to day.
A.She also suggests having a series of goals. |
B.Remember that your goals are yours alone. |
C.Share your goals with your personal trainer. |
D.If you don’t like something, you won’t give 100%. |
E.Always reward yourself for achieving your goals, however small. |
F.If you are unclear about others’ goal, you can ask for clarity(清晰). |
G.If you are looking for major fat loss, you will have to look at your diet, too. |
