Sushila, who lives in Basti, a village in western India, has been a symbol of hope thanks to her continuous efforts in education.

Twenty years ago, Sushila noticed that there was no Anganwadi(印度贫困地区教育中心)in her neighborhood. As a strong believer in education, she decided to open one in Basti. However, no one was willing to help her, and there was very little government support. So, she started an Anganwadi in her home, where she taught for two years. Later, the Anganwadi moved to a temple.

"Initially, children would not come to the Anganwadi because their parents would take them to the fields," said Sushila. However, she refused to let this bring her down and kept making door—to—door visits to encourage the villagers and get them on board. Slowly, the villagers warmed up to the idea and began to send their children to the Anganwadi.

Sushila started the Anganwadi in 1091 and continued it till 2002. In the 11 years, she helped more than 250 children learn the basics of education for free! "The kids' families were too poor to pay for education. Sometimes the parents would give me food grains, but I never expected any money, she said.

Then the Anganwadi was turned into a government school — Balwadi Vidya Mandir — in 2003—2004.

Sushila is also an untraditional woman. She married Baburao, an agricultural laborer who had two sons from his previous marriage. And she completely turned his life around. Being poor, Baburao had to drop out of school in Grade 2. "I always wanted my children to get education and live a life different from mine, so we sent all of them to school," said Baburao. “Today, everybody in the village wonders how the children of a laborer are so educated. My elder son is a teacher while the younger one is a policeman: And the child of Sushila and me is a professor of Geography."

British sculptor Taylor has made it his mission to protect our ecosystems (生态系统) by creating underwater museums. He's made over 850 artworks worldwide. On February 1, 2021, Taylor presented his latest work — the Underwater Museum of Cannes.

Located half a mile off the coast of Cannes, France — the permanent museum is the artist's first attempt into the Mediterranean Sea. "The main goal is to draw more people underwater to see the fact that our oceans need our help," the sculptor said. "Ocean ecosystems have been badly damaged by human activity, and it's not obvious what is happening when observing the sea from apart."

The museum is made up of 6 huge face sculptures, featuring local residents of various ages, ranging from Maurice, an 80—year—old fisherman, to Anouk, a 9—year—old student." Being directly linked to the sculptures encourages communities to get involved in the protection of our oceans," explained Taylor. Each face sculpture is divided into two different—sized parts, showing the state of the world's oceans: powerful on the outside but weak below the surface.

To make the museum easily approachable to divers, the sculptures have been positioned at shallow depths of between 6 to 10 feet. They are placed in the pockets of white sand between the seagrass, preventing boats from stopping close.

Though the waters surrounding the sculptures now appear blue, the seabed was filled with old boat engines, pipes and other rubbish: when the project began four years ago. "This is happening every day in our surrounding waters but it largely goes unnoticed. I like the idea of replacing the rubbish with artworks and achieving two goals at the same time," Taylor said. He also wants to restore the area's seagrass: the lungs of the Mediterranean. Just one square meter of the seagrass can produce up to 10 liters of oxygen daily. At the same time, the folds (褶皱) of the sculptures can provide perfect places for fishes and other creatures to avoid attacks.

8. What is special about the sculptures in the Underwater Museum of Cannes?
A.Each of them has two different faces.
B.They are modeled on the local people.
C.They will be moved away before long.
D.They are Taylor's first underwater artworks.
9. Which is a function of the newly—built museum?
A.It serves as a warning mark for boats.
B.It breaks down the waste on the seabed.
C.It offers ideal shelter for the sea animals.
D.It makes the seagrass produce more oxygen.
10. What does the underlined part "two goals" refer to in the last paragraph?
A.To present unique artworks and to gain widespread recognition.
B.To show the artist's talent and to attract more tourists underwater.
C.To clean the surrounding waters and to criticize irresponsible human activity.
D.To entertain people with artworks and to raise their awareness of sea protection.
11. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A.Environment.B.Technology.C.Geography.D.Discovery.

Scientists in China have developed a small, flexible device that can change heat from human skin into electrical power. In their research, the team showed that the device could power an LED light when worn around a wrist. The findings suggest that body temperature could someday power wearable electronics.

The new device is a thermoelectric generator (TEG) that uses temperature difference between the warmer body and the cooler environment to generate power. Researchers have designed a self—powered electronic system. They connect an LED to a TEG. Then, they wrap the TEG around the wrist of someone. With a temperature difference, the generator harvests heat given off from the skin and successfully lights up the LED.

Unlike traditional generators, thermoelectric generators don't use the energy of movement to produce power. They can be widely used in various fields to supply energy. In addition, thermoelectric generators don't rely on rare metals, which can lower the costs of production.

Zhang Oian.one of the leading scientists, and her colleague have been working on designing thermoelectric generators for years. With wearable devices becoming increasingly popular in recent years. the team wanted to explore whether these generators could replace traditional batteries in devices like fitness trackers and smart watches.

There's an increasing demand for greener energy, and TEGs fit right in, for they can turn wasted heat into power in many conditions — as long as there's a temperature difference. “Our production will have good performance if it's introduced to the market,” says Zhang Qian. Looking forward, the team plans to further improve the design so the device can absorb heat more efficiently.

12. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us?
A.The successful test on a TEG.B.The creation of wearable devices.
C.The environment's effect on human skin.D.The relationship between a TEG and an LED.
13. What are the main features of TEGs?
A.Flexible and time-saving.B.Efficient but high-cost.
C.Convenient and eco-friendly.D.Creative but energy-consuming.
14. What can we know from the text?
A.TEGs will soon replace traditional batteries.
B.The new device has a wide range of applications.
C.TEGs have been put on the market in large numbers.
D.The government has provided funds for the new device.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A.Green Energy Is Becoming More and More Popular
B.Traditional Generators Turn Wasted Heat into Useful Power
C.TEG: New Device Using Body Movement to Produce Power
D.Generator Gets Heat Given off by Skin to Power Wearable Devices
