Here are some of the movies that inspire you to travel.
The Lord of the Rings
The story is about Frodo, his friends and their adventurous journey through Middle Earth. Filmed in about 150 locations allover New Zealand , this traveling movie shows its beauty. From the rolling hills of Matamata to the volcanic region of Mt. Ruapehu, this is the best movie to see New Zealand. Also, this travel movie might have the only distinction of being inspired by travel too. The director of the movie Peter Jackson first read the novel on a train going from Wellington to Auckland when he was just seventeen.
Indiana Jones
Indiana Jones and travel are inseparable. Everyone remembers the red line on the world map that shows up on screen when he flies. The Egyptian scenes in Raiders of the Lost Ark were filmed in Tunisia. Temple of Doom was filmed mostly in Sri Lanka and Macau. The last Crusade was filmed in Italy, Spain and Jordan including an excellent view of Petra. Unlike the other ones, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was filmed almost entirely in the United States. However, their shots of Iguazu Falls are amazing.
The Talented Mr. Ripley
Tom Ripley is a working class young man. Through a case of mistaken identity, he is asked to go to Italy to convince a wealthy businessman’s son to come home. This travel movie starts in New York and heads to the fictional resort of Mongibello. The last section of the movie is filmed mostly in Rome and Naples. The locations are beautiful. They also did a good job of showing Italy as it looked in the 1960s.

I had often dreamt of the possibility of spending a year away from my hometown of Leeds in England, living in a foreign country. When I was old enough, however, I thought that my language was going to hold me back.
However, luckily for me, University of Leeds, where I was studying at the time, made it possible for any student, even people like me speaking only one language, to study abroad. Before I knew it I was boarding a plane for Salzburg, Austria. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect of the experience ahead of me but I was prepared to accept the challenge.
The university was quite small but the classes were large. Also, Austrian students usually take five years to complete their courses, so studying there was somewhat more relaxing than at home. Austrian students go home quite often, too. Therefore, the foreign students had to socialise with each other quite a lot, which didn’t help with our language skills.
Salzburg itself is a picture-postcard Austrian city. It is also famous for being the birthplace of Mozart and the setting for The Sound of Music. As a result, it is usually very busy with tourists. I also found that it doesn’t have a lot of entertainment for young people, in comparison with Leeds.
There are, however, many advantages of living in Salzburg. For example, get on a train and you can be in Prague, Rome or Krakow within a matter of hours. By the end of my year in Salzburg, I had visited eight other countries in Europe.
After spending a year overseas, I went back to my courses in Leeds and I was much more focused on what I wanted to get out of my last year and more appreciative of the opportunity the university provided. The year in Salzburg really showed me that you get a lot more out of a place when you live there compared to when you are just traveling through. I’d recommend all students to spend a year studying abroad if they can.
4. Compared with University of Leeds, the university in Salzburg ________.A.provides more social events | B.has longer university years |
C.has more foreign students | D.offers more small classes |
A.it’s convenient for people to travel | B.it has a high-speed rail network |
C.it’s the hometown of Mozart | D.it’s full of foreign tourists |
A.He benefited a lot from it. | B.He thought it made no difference to him. |
C.I was far from what he had expected. | D.It badly affected his studies at home. |
A.His not being old enough. | B.His fearing the culture shock. |
C.His becoming homesick easily. | D.His not knowing a foreign language. |
Like all big cities, Paris has a traffic problem: lots of cars, lots of traffic jams and lots of pollution from exhaust fumes (废气). So the city began a project to improve the situation.
Under the Velib project (‘Velib’ comes from velo liberty, or ‘bicycle freedom’) people can take a bicycle, use it for as long as they want, and then leave it at the same or another bicycle station. The first half-hour on the bike is free, but if you don’t return it after 30 minutes, you have to pay. But it’s only €1 a day or €29 a year! The bicycles are heavy (25 kg), and they are all gray and have baskets. There are about 20,000 of them in the city, and around 1,450 bicycle stations. So there are a lot more Velib stations than the 298 subway stations!
Paris is not the first city to have a project like this. But not everybody thinks it’s a great idea. One Parisian said, “These bicycles are only for short journeys. If people want to travel across the city, they won’t use a bicycle - they’ll still use their cars.”
A city spokesman said, “The bicycle project won’t solve all our traffic problems, of course. But it might help reduce air pollution. Traffic, together with factory fumes, is a big problem. There aren’t any simple answers to traffic problems and pollution in cities. But unless we do something now, there will be more traffic jams and temperatures will continue to rise, so the problems in our environment will get worse. The bikes might help people to lead a healthier life, too.”
8. What can we learn about the Velib project?A.Its bikes have no baskets. | B.Its bikes are light and colorful. |
C.It aims to make traveling easier. | D.It owns more stations than the subway. |
A.Free. | B.€1. |
C.€29. | D.€30. |
A.The cost is rather high. |
B.It’s hard to find a Velib station. |
C.It’s not suitable for a long journey. |
D.The distance between two Velib stations is long. |
A.Worried. | B.Positive. |
C.Uncaring. | D.Doubtful. |
If you want a quick look into the influence of Alibaba on daily Chinese life, take my experience. I moved to Beijing a year ago and quickly got tired of visiting small stores across the crowded, polluted city of 20 million people in search of new electronics, bathroom furnishings, and anything else my wife wanted. “You’re looking for what exactly? Why not try it? ” my Chinese teacher asked me one day. With that, my wonderful new relationship with Alibaba began.
Alibaba’s original business-to-business model now is second to consumer buying. Chinese retail(零售) buying makes up 80% of Alibaba’s profit, and leading that group is Taobao, with 800 million items(物品) for sale and the most unbelievable selection of things you’ll ever find. TMall.com is Alibaba’s other big site, where you can find brand name goods from Nike and Unilever near the lowest prices.
What I have a hard time explaining to friends and family back in the U.S. is how China has gone beyond traditional shopping — big-box retailers especially —in favor of online purchases on Taobao and a few other sites. In smaller towns than Beijing, where big retailers have not yet traveled, shopping online is shopping, and shopping is Taobao.
I have a list of some of my recent purchases on Taobao for a sense of how wide the marketplace is. Almost everything arrived a day or two after ordering with free shipping. I’m not even a big buyer, because I need friends to help me search the Chinese-language site. When I was searching my purchase history on my Chinese teacher’s iPad, which helps me buy goods, I looked through with great difficulty about 10 of her purchases for every one of mine.
12. Alibaba’s advantage mainly lies in .
A.its business-to-business service |
B.its big size |
C.its not charging small sellers |
D.its low price |
A.Alibaba is of middle size among all the online sites. |
B.Alibaba will continue to develop. |
C.Alibaba acts as a bridge between the buyers and sellers. |
D.Alibaba stands out as the best online site. |
A.Alibaba’s business-to-business service earns more money than retail. |
B.Taobao has no obvious advantage over other similar online sites. |
C.TMall.com provides more profit than Taobao. |
D.The author’s Chinese teacher is also an online purchase lover. |
A.Shopping online in China is TaoBao. |
B.Alibaba influences people’s daily purchase in China. |
C.Shopping online goes beyond traditional shopping. |
D.How the author purchases online in China. |

47. It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. "The day starts at dawn on my farm," he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze(吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. "Don’t be late for supper," Uncle Paul cried, "and keep to the track so that you don’t get lost!" "OK! " my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven(编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse.
