Dear 17-year-old self,

When your Laker dream comes true tomorrow, you need to find ways to invest(投资)in the future of your family and friends.

Purely giving material things to your siblings and friends may appear to be the right decision. You love them, and they were always there for your growing up, so it's only right that they should share in your success and all that comes with it. But the day will come when you realize that as much as you believed you were doing the right thing, you were actually holding them back.

You will come to understand that you were taking care of them because it made YOU feel good, and it made YOU happy to see them smiling and without a care in the world---and that was extremely selfish of you. While you were feeling satisfied with yourself, you were slowly eating away at their own dreams and ambitions. You were adding material things to their lives, but subtracting(减去)the most precious gifts of all: independence and growth.

There's plenty more I could write to you, but at 17, I know you don't have the attention span to sit through 2,000 words. Before you sign that first contract(合约), figure out the right budget for your parents as a priority---one that will allow them to live beautifully while also growing your business and setting people up for long-term success. That way, your children's kids and their kids will be able to invest in their own futures when the time comes.

Your life is about to change, and things are about to come at you very fast. But just let this sink in a bit when you lay down at night after another nine-hour training day.

Trust me, setting things up right from the beginning will avoid a ton of tears and heartache, some of which remains to this day.

Much love,

Kobe

Japan's government announced Tuesday, April 13, 2021 that it would start releasing treated radioactive water from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean in two years.

It's a move that's fiercely opposed by fishermen, residents and Japan's neighbors.

15 April, the first meeting of the China-ROK dialogue and cooperation mechanism of maritime affairs was held. The two countries urged Japan to fully consult with international institutions and neighboring countries, and cautiously handle the issue on the basis of participation by relevant countries and international institutions. This is the common position of the two sides. To protect the health of their own people and international marine environment, China and the ROK, as Japan's close neighbors and stakeholders, expressed grave concerns and strong dissatisfaction. This is perfectly natural and justified.

Assessment report of the IAEA experts says that the treated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant contains other radionuclides apart from tritium. According to Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), the nuclear wastewater contains a total of 62 radionuclides. In August 2018, environmentalists found by analyzing data released by TEPCO that iodine-129 levels went off the chart for 60 times in the year 2017. The amount of strontium in the water is also well above the limit. It is reported that Canada has detected radioactivecaesium-134 in salmon from its west coast. In waters near Hawaii, the amount of radioactive materials is twice it was before. These are signs that nuclear pollution from Fukushima may have already spread to North America.

The oceans are not Japan's trash can; and the Pacific Ocean is not Japan's sewer. Japan should not expect the world to pay the bill for its treatment of wastewater. The lesson from Japan's Minamata disease is not far behind us. It should reevaluate the issue and control releasing the wastewater before reaching agreement with all stakeholders and the IAEA through full consultations. China reserves the right to make further reactions.

8. Which of the following will the author agree with?
A.Japan will pour untreated radioactive water into Pacific Ocean.
B.Either China or ROK stands opposite to Japan.
C.The nuclear wastewater was predicted to contain 62 radionuclides.
D.Japan's Minamata disease has taught us a lesson.
9. What is the attitude of Japan towards the meeting?
A.ApprovingB.DisapprovingC.Not mentionedD.Neutral
10. What does the underlined expression “went off the chart” mean?
A.set off the anger of the public
B.were much higher than the standard
C.went against the requirement of the international institution.
D.disappeared from the rank chart for qualification
11. What's the best title of the passage?
A.Japan shocked the world by releasing radioactive water.
B.Japan plans to put the treated nuclear wastewater into the Pacific.
C.The Pacific Ocean-Japan's trash producer?
D.Is Japan going to reevaluate its behaviour?

Here is a test. Assign a score of 1 to 5, where 1 is “strongly agree” and 5 is “strongly disagree”, to the following statement: “I really care about my work.” If you have answered that kind of question before, you have probably applied for a job at a large company. Psychometric tests, as they are called, have become increasingly popular.

Eager job-seekers may think the answers to these questions are glaringly obvious. For any statement, give a response that creates a portrait of a diligent and collaborative worker. But the people who set the tests know that candidates will respond this way. So questions are rephrased in many different ways to check that applicants are consistent and make it difficult for them to remember what they have already said.

The Second World War had a big impact on psychometric testing. The British were impressed with the efficiency of German army officers and learned they had been selected with the help of intelligence tests. This led the British to create the War Office Selection Board. Alongside verbal and non-verbal reasoning, it challenged candidates with word-association exercises and being made to lead group discussions.

For high-skilled jobs, these tests are useful. However, Mr. Johnson says there is a risk with using such tests to recruit workers for low-skilled jobs. If you select people who pass complex cognitive tests, they will learn the job quickly but will then get bored and leave.

Psychometric tests became more popular from the 1970s onwards and are now seen as a useful way of sorting through the candidates who apply for the jobs offered by big companies. “Previously, it was a laborious task to sort through thousands of written applications,” says Julia Knight, another occupational psychologist. “As well as being time consuming, it was not very effective and accurate.”

12. What's the passage mainly talking about?
A.The rise of psychometric tests in nowadays society
B.The introduction of psychometric tests with its history
C.The benefits of using psychometric tests for bosses
D.The presentation of psychometric tests in companies
13. What do we know from the second paragraph?
A.Job seekers can guess the expected answers in the test.
B.It is never too hard to cheat in testing.
C.Psychometric tests are scientific and reasonable.
D.It's recommended to find a job through psychometric tests.
14. What can we learn from what Julia Knight said?
A.The traditional way of classifying written applications was unsatisfactory.
B.Psychometric tests are not effective and accurate as expected
C.Companies are rejecting thousands of written applications
D.It remains to be seen whether psychometric tests work well
15. How is the passage developed?
A.Comparing between the people who test and are tested
B.Going from an argument to its supporting ideas
C.Digging the topic from the present to the past
D.Unfolding from the topic to its related aspects
