Young Scientists
What is the most important thing to have if you want to become a scientist some day? Six top scientists chose “passion” as their answer.
During a youth science camp held by Shantou University last week, six famous scientists from home and abroad shared their experiences and knowledge with 81 senior high school students from different places across China.
Haifan Lin, a professor at Yale University, said most Chinese students seldom get the chance to communicate with scientists. “The camp offers an opportunity for them to feel the active mind and character of scientists, which they can learn from and follow,” said Lin, who planned the camp.
Tan Zhengzhong, a student from Shanghai, said it was great to discuss science with the scientists. “I have to do a lot of exercises every day at school, and do not have enough time to raise questions and solve them. But at the camp, every student was allowed to raise questions to the scientists,” said Tan.
For Huang Shengyu from Guangzhou, the biggest gain was ideas about her future career. “I had an interest in physics, but some seniors told me that I was talented in music. I was at a loss,” said Huang.
The words of Eddy Rubin, one of the six scientists, inspired her. “Do not study just to get ahead in class. You should study because you have passion for the subject. Do not choose a subject because your parents want you to do it. You should choose it because you are really interested in it,” said Rubin.
Huang said she knows how to choose a career now.
