I used to be crazy about the hunting season.
There’s a thrill in hunting, an excitement that comes over you when a deer crashes out of the bush. You are waiting for him with death. After hunting, you also feel great. There’s the bit of showing off with the boys—the fine head of the deer hung high up on the wall. There’s beauty in the woods, too, especially late in the fall. Sometimes you walk among the huge trees, where the sunlight filters through. It’s quiet and big, with touches of white and green and gold.
It was like that the last time I was in the woods. I was alone, packing a rifle and three thick sandwiches. I went up into the hills, heading for a well-used deer trail. Sure enough there were fresh tracks in the snow. I settled down behind a little bush for about an hour. It was then that I saw him. A deer, a big beautiful deer! Surely I couldn’t miss! I waited for him to realize I was there. I waited for him to be shocked and run away. But he fooled me completely. He came towards me! He was curious, I suppose, or maybe he was stupid.
He was not quite young. He must have known about men and guns. But he came closer, putting one foot before the other, slowly and purposefully. His big eyes never moved from my face. Well, that deer walked right up to where I was sitting. Then he stopped and looked at me!
What happened next is hard to believe, but it’s true. Just as when a friendly puppy comes near you, I reached up and scratched(搔) his head. And he liked to be scratched. In fact, he practically asked for more. I scratched his head and his nose poked at my shoulder. I fed him with my sandwich! Well, he finally went his way. Shoot him? Not me.
I started walking back. I was about half way back when I heard two shots. Those two shoots usually mean a kill. I had forgotten there were other hunters that day.
Those hunters would never know they could have scratched his head…

Hannah Raines plans to move back in with her parents after she completes her study program at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
The 21-year-old would like to get a job and save money for graduate school.
Raines’ parents, Jim and Juli, already have experience with an adult child returning home. Hannah’s twin brother, Dakota, returned home last year after the building where he lived was put up for sale.
“It was very natural,” Juli Raines said. She said having their adult children back at home is good for her and her husband.
“It wasn’t anything I had to think about,” Raines said. The only problem is figuring out where all four family members should park their cars, she noted.
Experts say younger Americans are experiencing different economic problems than earlier generations. Pay is not keeping up with housing costs or the bigger loans many graduating students must pay off after leaving school.
Pavel Marceux is an economic expert with Euromonitor International, a market research company. He said moving home for young adults may be a good decision. They can live at home with no or low rental payments, he said.
This will enable them to save money or pay down loans. It can also help aging parents deal with changing technology, Marceux said.
Not everyone who has returned home to live with one or both parents is struggling with their careers.
Damon Casarez is a photographer. He took pictures of his peers for The New York Times Magazine in 2014. But even with selling his photos to the New York Times and other successes, he needed to return home to save money.
Saving is necessary so he can repay $120,000 in loans that went toward his studies at the Art Center College of Design in California.
He said, “If I didn’t have that loan, I’d easily be able to live on my own somewhere comfortably.”

Ever since I was a child, I have dreamed about having magical powers. If I had magical powers, I’d first hope I didn’t have any restrictions on them. I would prefer to use my fingers for magic as opposed to having wands. Just more convenient, I think.
