If I Had Magical Powers

Ever since I was a child, I have dreamed about having magical powers. If I had magical powers, I’d first hope I didn’t have any restrictions on them. I would prefer to use my fingers for magic as opposed to having wands. Just more convenient, I think.     1

Transport

Traffic in Sydney is a nightmare which is why I take public transport to my job at the moment.     2     I like that I can read or write but I hate that I have to leave so early and get home so late. So yes, if I had magical powers, I’d just snap my fingers and wish hard for where I need to be! No time at all!

Cooking

3     Although I must admit my new pressure cooker is awesome for that, yet I still have to chop and prepare things. So my magical powers would certainly come in handy to make a good healthy meal quickly.

Teach Some People a Lesson

4     Not necessarily directed at me but to a lot of the kids I see in therapy. I really would love to teach bullies, abusers and other unkind souls a lesson. I don’t know how I’d do that really but maybe use my powers to have them experience what they put others through to get an actual idea of what it’s like.

Play with Time

I wouldn’t go backwards or forwards in time.     5     Rather, I would make time at work go by quickly and slow time down when I’m enjoying life. I guess though, given I would be using my powers to get rid of a lot of chores, I’m sure I’d have more time anyway for the things I love such as reading, writing and exercising.

A.I don’t think it’s allowed.
B.Another thing that takes time is cooking.
C.I am tired of the unkindness I see around me.
D.I’d make use of my magical powers in the following ways.
E.I don’t think I’d use my magical powers to get free money.
F.However, it still takes me a good hour and a half door to door each way.
G.All these ideas are making me wish I really did have magical powers.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述的是从吃的食物,定期的体育锻炼,以及远离酗酒等方面构建健康的生活方式。

【推荐1】Living a healthy lifestyle contains making choices about the foods we eat as well as exercise and other daily activities. The term “healthy lifestyle” can be defined as “to improve and protect one’s health and well-being”.

For this purpose, a healthy lifestyle can involve good eating habits, regular physical activity and anti-alcoholism.

First of all, good eating habits are the main way of living a healthy lifestyle. For instance, rushed morning routines, trying to lose weight, and lack of appetite(食欲)early in the morning are all reasons why people skip breakfast(不吃早餐). However, most experts think that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Another example is fast food; a hamburger from McDonald’s with special sauce and cheese is not exactly considered as a healthy meal. Our society today is busy and on the go at all times. It is much easier to stop and get fast food. As a result, humans become fatter. However, eating low-fat meals that include 5 to 9 serving of fruits and vegetables every day is an ideal healthy life plan. Therefore, good eating habits are the main way of living a healthy lifestyle.

Secondly, another way of living a healthy lifestyle is physical activity. Exercise is indeed part of life because it keeps the body and mind in good shape. Exercise reduces stress and contributes to(有助于)a good sleep. It can keep a person looking and feeling younger throughout his entire life, and it also helps build one’s energy and strength. So, physical activity is another way of living a healthy lifestyle.

Finally, another way is anti-alcoholism. Addiction to alcohol may cause serious social and public problems. It is accepted that driving after drinking is dangerous. Alcohol is a main factor of traffic deaths. Alcoholism can also lead to diseases, such as heart attack or liver trouble. Thus, anti-alcoholism is another way for a healthy lifestyle.

In conclusion, a healthy lifestyle can be maintained in three ways: the first way is good eating habits, the second way is regular physical activity and the final way is anti-alcoholism.

2】If you’re in your 20s or even 30s, you might feel a lot of uncertainty all the time. You may be not sure what your life purpose is.    1    This is normal.

We all want to have a certain life purpose. We all want to feel we’re on the right path. We all want to perfect our habits, our routines, or our productivity. We all want to feel more certain, and perfect in what we’re doing.

There is a struggle between the comfort of certainty and perfection and the fear of uncertainty and being suboptimal(不最理想的).

Let me let you in on a secret: no one is free from this struggle. Look at the most successful people you can think of —Bill Gates, Obama, Taylor Swift.     2    Do you think they have certainty and a feeling of reaching perfection? Not a chance. There is not one of us alive, not me or anyone else, who ever feels certainty about their purpose or path. If they do, they’re fooling themselves.     3

No one ever feels they’ve found the perfect productivity routine, the perfect version of themselves.     4

We all feel uncertainty, all day, and we all struggle with it. Some people have grown more comfortable with it than others, but in general no one likes uncertainty.

5    That’s perfectly OK, perfectly normal. Don’t run from it. Instead, stay with this uncomfortable, unappealing uncertainty. It’s here in you, a part of this moment, a part of you but not the whole of you.

A.Because it doesn’t exist.
B.Do you think they have it all figured out?
C.This uncertainty you’re feeling is unpleasant.
D.But if they’re honest, they don’t feel that certainty.
E.See if you can tell what you’re being uncertain about.
F.So focus on what you actually have right in front of you.
G.You may be uncertain about what path you should take in life.

【推荐3】A few weeks ago, I called an Uber to take me to the Boston airport for a flight home for the holidays. As I slid into the back seat of the car, the warm intonations(语调)of the driver’s accent washed over me in a familiar way.

I learned that he was a recent West African immigrant with a few young children, working hard to provide for his family. I could relate: I am the daughter of two Ethiopian immigrants who made their share of sacrifices to ensure my success. I told him I was on a college break and headed home to visit my parents. That’s how he found out I go to Harvard. An approving eye glinted(闪烁)at me in the rearview window, and quickly, we crossed the boundaries of rider and driver. I became his daughter, all grown up – the product of his sacrifice.

And then came the fateful question: “What do you study?” I answered “history and literature” and the pride in his voice faded, as I knew it might. I didn’t even get to add “and African-American studies” before he cut in, his voice thick with disappointment. “All that work to get into Harvard, and you study history?”

Here I was, his daughter, squandering the biggest opportunity of her life. He went on to deliver the age-old lecture that all immigrant kids know. We are to become doctors (or lawyers, if our parents are being generous) – to make money and send money back home. The unspoken demand, made across generations, which my Uber driver laid out plainly, is simple: Fulfill your role in the narrative(故事)of upward mobility so your children can do the same.

I used to feel anxious and backed into a corner by the questioning, but now as a junior in college, I’m grateful for their support more than anything. This holiday season, I’ve promised myself I won’t get annoyed at their inquiries. I won’t defensively respond with “but I plan to go to law school!” when I get unrequested advice. I’ll just smile and nod, and enjoy the warmth of the occasion.

2. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “squandering” in Paragraph 4?
A.wastingB.creating

3. Why are immigrant kids expected to be doctors or lawyer?
A.They are very smart in general.
B.They have more opportunities.
C.Their parents are high achieving as well.
D.Their parents want them to move upward in society.
4. How did the author feel about the driver’s questioning?
A.Getting upset.B.Feeling satisfied.
