I was doing some Christmas shopping in a toy store and decided to look at Barbie dolls for my nieces. A nicely dressed little girl was excitedly looking through the Barbie dolls as well. As she was looking, a little boy came to the Pokemon toys. He was dressed neatly, but his clothes were obviously old. He was with his father as well, and kept picking up the Pokemon video toys. Each time he picked one up and looked at his father, his father shook his head and said, "No."
The little girl had chosen her Barbie. However, she stopped and was watching them. Rather dejectedly, the boy had to give up the Pokemon toys and choose something else. The little girl put her Barbie back on the shelf, and ran over to the Pokemon toys. She excitedly picked up one and raced towards the checkout. I picked up my purchases and got in line behind them. Then, much to the little girl's delight, the little boy and his father got in line behind me. After the toy was paid for and bagged, the little girl handed it back to the cashier and whispered something in her ear. The cashier smiled and put the package under the counter.
I paid for my purchases and was rearranging things when the little boy came up to the cashier. The cashier checked his purchases and said, "Congratulations, you are my hundredth customer today, and you win a prize!" With that, 'she handed the little boy the Pokemon toys, and he could only stare in surprise. It was exactly what he had wanted!
The little girl and her father had been standing at the doorway during all of this. Then they walked out. As I walked back to my car, I heard the father ask his daughter why she had done that. I'll never forget what she said to him. "Daddy, didn't Grandparents want me to buy something that would make me happy?" He said, "Of course they did honey." To which the little girl replied, “Well, I just did!"
I feel very shocked to have witnessed the true spirit of Christmas in that toy store, in the form of a little girl who understands more about the meaning of this festival than most adults I know.

Body language is part of nonverbal language. It includes things like gestures, facial expressions, and even small things that are hardly perceptible like a brief shrug of the shoulder or a slight nod of the head.
There are many ways to interpret (诠释) body language but you must know that these are frequently specific to a culture. For instance, Americans wave goodbye with the palm (手掌) facing the person they are waving to. In other cultures, waving goodbye may occur with the palm up to the sky. To people in the USA, this might look like a gesture asking someone to approach rather than a wave goodbye.
Still, since people live in one area where body language may be similar among them, it's important to know that you can communicate a lot by how you gesture, what you do with your arms, and even how you posture. A person in much of the USA who sits with hands crossed over the chest, and with legs crossed, may be sending an unintended message that they're really not open to talking. Eye contact is another key element of non-verbal contact in much of the western world.
It would be impossible to describe all the ways people use non-verbal language, but it's important to remember that non-verbal language isn't necessarily universal. If you're observing body movements that seem incorrect, consider cultural or regional differences that may account for it. You may even note that family members have similar gestures that aren't that common elsewhere. If you think your body language is off or needs improvement in a new area, just remember ''When in Rome, do as the Romans do.'' That can make you appear more confident or direct.
8. What does the underlined word ''perceptible'' in paragraph 1 mean?A.Suitable. | B.Bearable. |

A.Totally accept it. | B.Just ignore it. |
C.Try to understand it. | D.Try to change it. |
Despite what so many people would love to believe, NASA hasn’t discovered any evidence of past or present intelligent life on Mars. So, when the Curiosity rover (好奇号探测器) found something suspicious on the Red Planet’s surface, they were not only surprised but also a little bit worried.
The thin fragment was suspicious enough to guarantee its own name, with NASA’s Curiosity rover team calling it the “Pettegrove Point Foreign Object Debris,” named for the location where it was discovered. With no idea what it was or where it came from, the rover’s handlers began to worry that it might actually be a piece of the rover itself, suggesting some unseen damage or other issue with the robot. Thankfully, those concerns seem to have been unfounded.
In a new update from NASA the object has now been identified as a natural piece of rock rather than a piece of any man-made craft or vehicle. The team analyzed the bizarre object with a tool called the ChemCam RMI. The instrument uses a laser (激光器) to sniff out the makeup of anything it’s pointed at, and the results for this particular piece of debris revealed that it’s actually just a very thin piece of rock.
NASA describes the inspection: The planning day began with an interesting result from the previous plan’s ChemCam RMI analysis of a target that was referred to as “Pettegrove Point Foreign Object Debris” (PPFOD), and speculated to be a piece of spacecraft debris. In fact it was found to be a very thin flake of rock, so we can all rest easy tonight—Curiosity has not begun to shed its skin!
How this particularly thin sliver of rock got to where it is—and why it seems to be a different colour than the surrounding sand and debris —remains unexplained, but at least the rover isn’t falling apart.
12. What attitude does NASA hold towards the newly found thin fragment?A.Positive. | B.Surprised. | C.Interested. | D.Amazed but worried. |
A.Its finder. | B.Its location. | C.Its researcher. | D.Its shape. |
A.Strange. | B.Changeable. | C.Normal. | D.Common. |
A.How this particularly thin sliver of rock got to where it is. |
B.Why it seems to be a different colour than the surrounding sand and debris. |
C.Whether the rover is falling apart. |
D.None of them. |
How to become a more interesting person
You might think that being interesting is a born talent, or that it means you have to be the ''life of the party''. Neither of those things are necessarily true. If you want to leave a good impression, you don't have to make sure all eyes are on you.
Show Up.
Even those who prefer to be alone can be interesting when they get going on topics they're enthusiastic about, or talking to someone they truly find interesting.
Be a Good Observer.
At first, walk around the room. If it's a dinner party, try something new or interesting on the table that you've never tried, which may give you something to talk about.
Make a mental game plan of conversation starters that will serve you well. You don't need to write down conversations before going out, but you should keep a couple of things in your pocket to keep the conversation going, or questions to ask if it stops. Simple things like ''How do you know the host? '' and ''How did you get here? '' are always good conversation starters.
Never Fear Silence.
Uncomfortable silences are part of talking with people. Don't rush to till them.
A.Go with a plan. |
B.End up with simple topics. |
C.So you should find those great conversations. |
D.Here are some tips anyone can use in any social setting. |
E.You should also observe people in the room you find interesting. |
F.You'd better let it run its course if there's a stop in the conversation. |
G.It just means you leave a good impression on the people you talk with. |

Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus(马戏团). Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money.
Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.
One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It should be highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say, “You are my knight in shining armor.”
He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say, “You got that right.” The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady gave the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand; her head dropped, and his lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say?”
The ticket lady told the price to him again. The man didn’t have enough money. How could he turn and tell his eight children that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus?
In fact, we were not rich. So I understand how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.
