One late summer evening, I stood in my father’s garden, watching my kids dig in the dirt with toy bulldozers (推土机). I had driven up to my parents’ house that afternoon feeling upset My husband was working day and night, and my twins hadn’t napped. I was one step away from a complete breakdown.
“Come up,” my mom said, “Let’s rest for a while.”
As the day of temporary relaxation drew to a close, I took a walk around Dad’s once-neat garden rows and noticed the tomato plants Dad had planted.
“Roma tomatoes, the kind for sauce. Renember when your mom used to make sauce?” my father said. I hadn’t thought of it in years actually. It was a recipe passed from my Italian immigrant great-grandmother down to my grandmother and then my mother. And that’s where it had stopped. Though I liked cooking, I didn’t want to waste much time on the dish. Why should I simmer (慢慢地煮) tomato sauce all day when I could make different kinds of dishes?
Dad gave me an idea. “I’m going to make sauce,” I said. My father raised a skeptical eyebrow but grabbed some boxes and told the kids to start picking. The twins threw tomatoes like softballs to each other as the youngest begged to join me. Everyone was crying at one point and I almost gave up on my big plan. Yet something inside me fought back, a deep-seated fancy for finding the link between the recipe’s owner and me.
At last, I successfully finished my sauce and it was approved by my parents. The efforts I made with those boxes of tomatoes gave me a sense of accomplishment. Each crank of the handle (柄), each slice of the knife, each stir of the pot was a prayer for comfort and confidence. Like most things that are worthwhile, the mess was part of the process.

We are all aware of the effect greenhouse gas emissions (排放) is having on our planet and the efforts needed to protect the earth. Most of us are doing our bit to reduce our influence or the environment, but despite our collective effort, are we doing enough to achieve net zero by 2050?
Net zero means not adding to the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Many countries are doing their bit by changing how they produce and use power to cut down carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) output. And they announced what further steps they were going to take at the recent COP26 summit in Glasgow (格拉斯哥气候峰会).
In the UK, the government has been setting out its plans to achieve net zero by 2050. It’s recently announced an end date for the sale of gas boilers, which are used for heating homes. The idea is to replace them with heat pumps. It’s offering homeowners up to £5, 000 to replace them. Another plan in the UK is a big push towards electric cars. More charging points are to be added in streets, and no new petrol cars will be sold by 2030.
But not all emissions can be reduced to zero, so there should be other ways to make up for it. One way to do this is to plant thousands of trees, which are good at taking in carbon dioxide. The UK government has promised to plant 30, 000 hectares of trees a year by 2025. Other ideas can work too, but what’s certain is this will cost money. The CBI’s (英国工业联合会) Tom Thackray told the BBC, “those costs have to be weighed up against the cost of doing nothing.”
Whether the UK, or anyone else, reaches net zero is yet to be seen. And there’s some doubt about how this can be accurately measured anyway. But it’s generally recognised that a global effort is needed to protect the environment. Therefore, net zero targets only make sense if every other country is moving in the same direction.
5. It can be inferred from the passage that_______.A.people are doing enough to reduce the amount of green gas |

C.Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions | D.Planting More Trees Together |
Practice doesn’t always make perfect when it comes to becoming the next Mozart, a new study suggests. Researchers compared pairs of identical twins, and found that no matter how hard one twin had practised, the other twin who had practiced much less still had an equal level of ability in certain musical skills. This may be because some aspects of musical talent are built into the genes (基因), the researchers said.
Miriam Mosey, a scientist at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and her team looked at the DNA of 1, 211 pairs of adult identical twins, who share almost 100 percent of their genes. Identical twins are born from the same single egg and often look very similar in appearance. They also examined the DNA of 1,358 pairs of fraternal twins (异卵双胞胎), who share an average of 50 percent of their genes. Those who played a musical instrument or sang reported how many years they practiced, and for how many hours a week.
Mosey then tested their musical abilities to see if practice had an effect on ability. She looked at how well people could tell differences in pitch (音调).
Like most people, Mosey used to think that those who put in more practice time would earn higher scores on their ability than those who practiced less. But when she compared lifetime practice scores with musical abilities between identical twins, Mosey found no relationship between the amount of practice time and her level of musical ability. Two twins could have an equal level of musical ability, no matter how much more one twin practiced compared with the other.
The researchers concluded that genetics play a larger role than practice in certain aspects of musical talent.
Mosey and her colleagues made another interesting finding: Genes may determine a person’s motivation (动机) to practice. The majority of participants who reported practicing a lot also shared a high percentage of the same genes.
8. What do you know about identical twins?A.They often look different. | B.They are usually very alike. |
C.They share same interests. | D.They share 100 percent of their genes. |
A.Those who practice more will have higher musical ability. |
B.Fraternal twins have more musical talent than identical twins. |
C.Those who practice more are likely to have similar genes. |
D.Twins may obtain similar musical ability if they practice enough. |
A.education magazine | B.scientific magazine | C.social report | D.medical report |
In a recent survey in America, 62% of people said that creativity was more important to success in the workplace than they had expected when they were in school.
One misunderstanding about creativity is that it is just for some special people. This is not true.
Those who see things differently from others and try to make their ideas a reality are the ones who make the greatest changes in the world. Therefore, it is important that schools do not prevent creativity.
It is worrying that many schools are less concerned now with creativity when this is actually the most important time in history for it. People used to study hard, go to university, and get a job. That was it. But now, everyone works hard, goes to university and there aren’t the jobs out there that ensure a safe future.
A.Everyone can be creative. |
B.Creativity is connected with many aspects |
C.However, creativity can be acquired at any age. |
D.Instead, they should work to grow and exercise it. |
E.It’s hard to work out where exactly creativity comes from. |
F.Without creativity, we can’t set ourselves apart from others. |
G.They need to learn to see problems as opportunities for learning rather than something unsuccessful. |
