On the night of August 24,2001,I lost most of my right leg. At the hospital,I just kept telling myself to hold on. Weeks later I made a deal with the hospital staff that once I could roll onto my side,I could be discharged(准许离开).I am proud to say that just one short week later, was going home. The day I left the hospital,I made a promise to myself to never give up.

In February of 2013, my life was forever changed when a sweet lady asked me why I did not wear a prosthesis(假肢). My simple answer was "I don't have sixty thousand dollars. "The next morning I was in tears as I learned that Alisson, Jeff Hoffman, founder of Priceline, and a dozen other people, had bought a prosthesis for me. From the first step, it was apparent to me just how much this would mean to me.

For a year I tried to adjust to the leg and settle into everyday life, until one day I realized I was making a life but not living one. After almost 13 years of thinking that I was confident, I had an unfamiliar feeling sweep over me. For the first time in my life. I was confident! I desired to help those around me, to have them experience this unbelievable feeling for themselves.

In April of 2014, I started modeling. My dream is that one day a little girl will see me on a poster at her favorite clothing store and say, "Wow, she is amazing, and she only has one leg.

I'll never forget the day when Mary came into my office and said, I am too old to learn how to use a computer. I shook my head. Here was a woman who had raised 6 children and who had made great progress in her career telling me that she was too old to learn something new. I told her that I always believed people were never too old to learn.

Mary followed my advice and did learn how to use the computer. Now, she is retired and leading a very active life volunteering in her community( 社区 ),using her computer skills and helping anyone that needs help.

When she was in her sixties, one day she called me and said she had played the piano for others all her life, and now she was going to make a CD of her own. My mind flashed back to the day when she told me she was too old to learn. You can imagine my surprise and delight.

To produce the CD, she had a lot of things to learn. It was not just sitting at the piano and playing. She had to research the songs, learn about copyright(版权),and learn about marketing. It was pretty amazing for someone who once said she was too old to learn. And finally she made it. Now she has her own CD-Mixed Blessings.

Most of you probably have heard about some people who have gone back to university in their seventies and have also graduated. They are on their way again to charging themselves with a new skill and a new attitude towards life. The point is you are unable to learn anything at any age if you believe you are too old. A.did not agree with her
B.felt sad and decided to help her

Working on a farm and taking care of crops can be difficult. Engineers have long wanted to build robots to lighten the load. But it has proved a difficult task. Robots that walk or roll along the ground can step on the easily damaged plants heavily. And they have to stop working when it rains. “Tarzan”, however, could deal with some of those challenges.

Jonathan Rogers is a robotics expert at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. When it comes to a farm environment, he realized robots would face many problems. “Many robots tend to get stuck,” he says, “It's very hard to leave them out for long periods without a human helping them.”

What if the robot could move above the crops? Jonathan Rogers says. Then his team set out to design a robot that could swing hand to hand along wires hung above the field. He named their invention Tarzan after the jungle-swinging character in a movie.

Mark Spong, a robotics researcher at the University of Texas at Dallas says that he admires Tarzan for its using swinging movement to save energy and the idea of building a wire structure to move around above crops.

Rogers first predicted that Tarzan could help farmers monitor crops with sensors and cameras. But he also said future robots might take water to a particularly thirsty plant. And adding a third “hand” could allow such a robot to harvest fruits and vegetables. Finally the robot could move off the farm and into the city, helping deal with the traffic and security.

12. What worried the engineers when they built the farm robots?
A.They took up too much space.B.They made the farming process slow.
C.They had difficulty exploring in fields.D.They caused certain damage to crops.
13. What does Jonathan Rogers think about most farm robots?
A.They take much time to make.B.They get out of date more easily.
C.They depend too much on people.D.They get used to the environment slowly.
14. What attracts Mark Spong most about Tarzan?
A.Its strong wings.B.Its low cost.
C.Its creative design.D.Its powerful engine.
15. How did Jonathan Rogers feel about Tarzan’s future?
A.It could be found everywhere.B.It could be put into more practical uses.
C.It could be used to do all the farm work.D.It could be popular with working people in cities.

How to protect your ears

You and your friends are leaving a concert on a Friday night. When you get outside, your ears are ringing. You have to shout to be heard.     16     So no harm done…right?

Not quite. Temporary buzzing may be easy to ignore, but repeated exposure to loud noise will eventually cause serious--- and irreversible(无法治愈的)--- hearing loss. A new study conducted by researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston shows that one in five people between the ages of 12 and 19 are experiencing slight hearing loss, and one in 20 have mild hearing loss.     17    But the good news is that there plenty of ways you can protect your ears from further damage — and still listen to the music you love:

Ask around. Put your earbuds in or your headphones on, and then ask a friend next to you whether or not he or she can hear what you’re listening to.     18    Turn it down.

Buy noise-canceling headphones. A pair of earbuds or headphones that fits comfortably will limit outside noise so that you can hear your music better at lower volumes.

Take breaks.       19     So when listening to music, take your headphones off for 15 or 20 minutes and let your ears enjoy the quiet.

20    You can buy a cheap pair at any drugstore as an easy way to lower volume at concerts — or while playing or practicing your own music — without changing the quality of the sound.

A.Use earplugs.
B.Keep the volume below 70 percent.
C.If the answer is yes, your music is too loud.
D.But by morning, your hearing is totally back to normal.
E.Like every other part of your body, your ears need rest.
F.Unfortunately, there’s no way to get back hearing you’ve already lost.
G.The exposure to noise is louder and longer than in any previous generation.

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Robots make me nervous-especially the ones which seem to think for     36    (them). I was     37     (embarrass) to admit this till I heard that Bill Gates, the     38     (found) of Microsoft, felt the same way.

Gates said in     39     interview with the social networking and news website Reddit: “I am in the camp that is concerned about super Intelligence. First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage     40     (proper). A few decades after that though the intelligence is strong enough     41     (be)a concern.”

Well, maybe I don’t have to worry about my computer     42     kitchen equipment yet. After I use them I can always pull the plug. But in the future, machines might find a way to prevent us from     43     (turn) them off. That’s a terrible thought.

It is a good thing     44     American writer Isaac Asimov thought about how far robots can go and     45     (leave) us his three rules of robotics. They state that a robot may not hurt a human being or allow a human being to come to harm.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150词左右。

A man came home from work late, tired and impatient, to find his 5-year-old son waiting for him at the door.

“Daddy, may I ask you a question?”

“Sure, what is it?” replied the man.

“Daddy, how much do you make an hour?”

“That’s none of your business. Why do you ask?”the man said angrily.

“I just want to know. Please tell me.” pleaded(恳求)the little boy.

“If you must know, I make $20 an hour.”

“Oh,”the little boy replied, with his head down. Looking up, he said,“Daddy, may I borrow $10?”

The father was angry, “If the only reason you asked is that you can borrow some money to buy some silly toys, then go back to your room and think about why you are being so selfish. I work hard every day for such childish(幼稚的)behavior.” The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy’s questions. “How dare he ask such questions only to get some money?”he thought to himself. After about an hour, the man calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10 and he really didn’t ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little boy’s room and opened the door.

“Are you asleep, son?”he asked.

“No, daddy, I’m awake,” replied the boy.

“I’ve been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier,”said the man. “It has been a long day and I took out my anger on you. Here’s the $10 you asked for.”

The little boy sat straight up, smiling. “Oh. Thank you, daddy!”he yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled bills(皱巴巴的钞票).

Paragraph 1:

The man, seeing that the boy already had money started to get angry again.
