How to travel light
Packing for a trip should be about getting together the essentials, not filling up a suitcase with your whole wardrobe. Too much baggage will weigh you down during your travels. Fortunately, travelling heavy is completely avoidable.
Downsizing your luggage
Limit the number of bags you bring. The more bags you take with you on your trip, the heavier your travel load will feel. If you’re only going away for a few days, try to fit everything you’re bringing into one suitcase or one backpack. If your trip is longer, limit yourself to two bags. Don’t spread your travel belongings out across multiple bags if it’s not necessary. One full suitcase will be easier to travel with than two half-full suitcases. If you’re flying to your destination, try to fit all your belongings in a carry-on size bag. It will be easier to get on and off the plane, and you won’t have to pay to check a bag.
Downsizing your travel wardrobe(服装)
Check the weather before you leave. If it’s calling for sunshine and warm weather every day of your trip, you don’t need to pack a heavy sweater or a rain jacket. If you’re worried the weather could change, remember that you can always buy or borrow something at your destination. Pack practical shoes you can wear on multiple occasions. Avoid packing a different pair of shoes for every day or event during your trip. Shoes can’t be folded or rolled up in your bag to save space. Aim for two pairs of shoes if possible, a casual pair of walking shoes and then something nicer for when you’ re in a more formal setting.

A Canadian addicted to Chinese ink wash painting
Canadian Brandon Collins-Green calls himself a Chinese culture “addict”. He has lived in China for over six years, spending his time in painting in the Chinese ink wash style and translating Chinese classics into English.
Collins-Green, 37, is a doctoral candidate in classical Chinese literature at Jiangxi Normal University in Nanchang. About 15 years ago, his first encounter with a stage adaption of the classic Chinese novel The Dream of the Red Chamber in Singapore inspired him to study Chinese in the following years. Learning Chinese as a second language, Collins-Green found it was not easy to understand a novel written in Chinese. “Besides the stories, I am interested in the poems, dialogues and lantern riddles in the book, ” he said, “Because of The Dream of the Red Chamber, I wanted to get a closer look at China.”
His strong curiosity about China and Chinese culture prompted Collins-Green to travel to the city of Nanchang in 2015, in the hope of learning what the real China was like. During a visit to Badashanren Memorial Hall in Nanchang, where paintings of a famous Chinese artist were on exhibition, Collins-Green was interested in how a tiny brush could depict (描画) the curves of hills, shade and light on paper.
In his years spent translating The Dream of the Red Chamber into English, he has gradually found his way of combining Chinese and foreign cultures into his paintings, writing poems in English as the backdrops of his figures. As of this year, Collins-Green has completed over 2, 500 works, including translations of The Dream of the Red Chamber, landscape paintings and portraits.
He lives a life greatly influenced by The Dream of the Red Chamber, renting a loft of about 9 square meters beside his university as a studio. Since this March, his paintings have been exhibited at art festivals in cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Xi’ an, bringing him a group of fans. Some have sent him emails, asking about the meanings of the poems in his paintings.
“We can see from Collins-Green that traditional Chinese culture is becoming more attractive to people in other countries,” said Li Shunchen, Collins-Green’s mentor at Jiangxi Normal University. “I really recommend that more people come to China to see how fast it is changing and to enjoy the charm of its culture,” Collins-Green said.

On the side of a busy road leading into Dundee, on the east coast of Scotland, the blades (叶片) of a small wind turbine (涡轮机) move in the wind of passing cars and trucks. It is charging a battery that is below the ground. This is an invention by Sanwal Muneer, a young engineer from Pakistan.
Muneer was inspired to create the turbine as he stood on the side of a racetrack several years ago. “At first, the light wind from the cars was just a welcome relief from the heat,” he says. “Then I started to think about how we could use that energy.”
The turbine stands two-and-a-half metres tall. Made of recyclable carbon fibre, it weighs just nine kilogrammes, making it easy to transport and set up. The fully-charged battery can hold a kilowatt of electricity, enough to run two lamps and a fan for around 40 hours. The idea is that this could be a source of electricity for rural communities in developing countries, or could power traffic lights or road signs in urban areas.
Dundee City Council is the first local authority to allow Muneer’s company, Capture Mobility, to test the turbine beside its roads. “We want to help engineers create something inventive which is also beneficial to the city.” says Neil Gellatly, head of roads and transportation for Dundee City Council. Capture Mobility moved to Scotland from Pakistan in 2015. The Scottish government is investing (投资) in cleaner-energy technologies. Wind is also strong and plentiful all year round here. This made it a good location for Muneer’s company.
Production costs remain the company’s biggest challenge. The turbines must be affordable in developing countries, but achieving this will depend on commercial (商业的) scale (规模). Capture Mobility is now analysing data from the turbine. Later this year, the company plans to send the next stage of the design to the producers. “I am passionate about engineering,” Muneer says. “But engineering is only a success if it improves lives.”
8. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?A.By sharing opinions about turbines. | B.By offering the definition of turbines. |
C.By introducing the inventor’s experience. | D.By describing the scene of a turbine at work. |
A.It is fixed to the ground. | B.It turns traffic into energy. |
C.It has been used to power traffic lights. | D.It is inspired by a rechargeable fan. |
A.To make full use of its wind with the Scottish government’s permission. |
B.To work with its inventive engineers. |
C.To help solve its energy shortage. |
D.To answer its government’s invitation. |
A.Make the turbine out of recyclable materials. | B.Invest in cleaner-energy technologies. |
C.Test the turbine in Dundee. | D.Mass-produce the turbine. |
There has been a rapid rise in the use of emojis(表情符号) over the past decade. In 2010, there were just over 1, 000 emojis available for people to use on their phones. By 2021, the number had risen to 3, 353, and another 107 are expected in 2022. In that time emojis have become a part of people’s everyday language when they communicate online or with text message. It is estimated that there are around five millions emojis are used every day on Facebook and Facebook Messengers alone.
If an emoji replaces a word in a sentence, people comprehend it without issue. If an emoji that doesn’t make sense is added to a sentence, we spend more time trying to make sense of it. And yet, emojis are not words. Consider what happens when emojis stand on their own, without text. We’ve found that when emojis are strung together one after another, like words in a sentence, they are harder to comprehend than when they are combined to look like one picture.
While emojis can stand in well for concrete nouns such as kiwi and cat, they are in short supply at grammatical concepts such as verb tense, prepositions and pronouns. In addition, emoji users can not easily create new ones to fit a conversational context. This limitations mean emojis will never replace language nor exist as a language all on their own.
So if emojis aren’t words, what are they? In some sense emojis give us something we already have with spoken/signed language. In face-to-face communication, as well as using words, we also extract meaning from the tone and pitch of the voice, facial expressions, hand gestures, body language—and even the physical setting of the conversation. Emojis, similarly, give us a way to enrich the text-based medium.
12. How is the first paragraph developed?A.By analyzing reasons. | B.By providing arguments. |
C.By providing statistics. | D.By giving examples. |
A.We can not extract meaning from them. |
B.We use concrete nouns in communication. |
C.They are unable to create a conversational context. |
D.They are not enough at grammatical concepts. |
A.arranged | B.deserted | C.scored | D.gone |
A.Emojis will replace language in the future. |
B.The use of Emojis has increased sharply. |
C.Emojis aren’t destroying language—they are enriching it. |
D.Emojis can’t be created easily. |
A Beginner’s Guide to Snowboarding
Snowboarding is one of the most rewarding sports to learn and a great way to enjoy the winter. Not only is snowboarding fun, but it’s good for you, too.
The most important thing to pay attention to is your equipment.
Next, you need to pick a good day. Your ideal day would be clear and sunny with a good amount of soft snow for extra padding (垫状物) when you take a fall.
When starting, edge control is everything. Always keep the forward / downward-facing edge of your board in mind, and don’t let it move down to catch the snow.
When you’re first coming down the mountain, it’s important to learn how to stop, control your speed and make long, proper turns. It may feel strange, but watch how quickly your body adapts to this new environment. Just remember, soon you’ll be at one with the board. That’s said, you may be sore (酸痛的) the next day. This is normal.
Most importantly, remember to have fun and that nothing happens overnight.
A.Just make sure you give yourself enough rest. |
B.Check out the weather reports as you plan your trip. |
C.If you have a fall, there won’t be as much impact on your body. |
D.Your local snowboard shop will tell you everything you need to know. |
E.You can burn up to 400 or 500 calories an hour, and you work your entire body. |
F.It’s also worth mentioning that skiing and snowboarding are completely different. |
G.You may think you need just basic equipment as you’re not going to make a living by this. |
