Controlling your food longings and dropping pounds fast is easy: Just eat break-fast. The editors of Eat This, Not That! carried out researches to determine some best breakfast foods for weight loss.

Black Beans

Protein, per 1/2 cup: 7g

Black beans will not only fill you up for hours but also help slim you down. Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center researchers found that with black beans consumed daily, study participants' fat reduced by 4 percent over two years.

Peanut Butter

Protein, per 2 tbsp(汤勺): 7-8g

While processed peanut butter is filled with sugar and oils, the real stuff is made with just two ingredients: salt and peanuts. The peanut is filled with heart-healthy monounsaturated(单一不饱和的) fats. Nutritionist and personal trainer Kristin Reisinger suggests using the healthy fat in an AM smoothie.

Almond Butter

Protein, per 2 tbsp: 7-8 g

“Almond butter is high in protein, fiber and monounsaturated fats,” says Martha McKittrick, RDN, CDE." Studies have also shown that people who eat nuts are less likely to become overweight than those who avoid them, likely because it helps you feel fuller.” To get the benefits at breakfast, McKittrick suggests spreading some nut butter on the whole grain toast.

Eggs

Protein, per two large eggs: 13 g

“Eggs are an excellent source of protein and other healthy nutrients including fat-burning choline(胆碱),” says McKittrick. Choline, also found in lean(瘦的) meats, seafood and collard greens, attacks the gene mechanism that causes your body to store fat around your liver(肝脏), according to Zero Belly Cookbook. The more eggs you eat, the less egg-shaped you get.

Eugene O' Neill, who was born in 1888, in New York, was a leading American drama writer and the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1936. His father was a successful touring actor. Because of that, Eugene spent his early childhood in hotels, on trains, and backstage. Although later in his life he grew to hate his father for not giving him security in his early years and a loving and comfortable family, he had the theater in his blood

As a student. O'Neill went to boarding schools but spent the summers in a moderate house his family owned. He left Princeton University in 1907, only about one year after he entered it, to start what he later called his real education in "life experience". At the age of 24, he was hired as a reporter and poetry column writer for the Net London Telegraph, where he worked for only a few months.

O'Neill didn't cut a figure in playwriting until the summer of 1916, when he was in a peaceful village of Provincetown. While O'Neill was only one of those whose plays were produced by the theater, he led the group to success because of his contribution within the next few years. By the time his first full-length play, Beyond the Horizon, was produced on Broadway on February 2, 1920, at the Morosco Theater, the young playwright already had a small reputation.

Theater critics spoke highly of Beyond the Horizon for its tragic realism. The play brought O'Neill more public attention, as well as his first Pulitzer Prize, apart from which he won another three for Amna Christie, Strange Interlude, and Long Day's Journey Into Night. Over the next two decades. O'Neill continued to gain reputation nationally and globally. He became the most widely translated and produced dramatist after Shakespeare and Bernard Shaw.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述了美国学生在校时间长但学习成果并不理想的问题。

American education stands as a model for many countries around the world. Findings, however, have shown that students spend more time in American schools but this time spent doesn’t exactly result in a better performance when compared with students in other countries, where the young spend fewer hours in school. Is this an important signal for the need to review the American school system?

It’s commonly believed that spending longer hours in school results in better performance; this has been found to be untrue. The time spent in school isn’t the only reason why students in Japan and South Korea do well in international examinations. The excellent performances of these students are tied to more trainings such as cram schools (补习班), and the time spent during these periods of learning isn’t part of the time spent at school.

American schools start early in the morning, with the kids having lunch in school and they stay until school closes. But the school time is flexible in countries such as Germany and Finland and the kids have lunch at home and won’t return, but will continue with homework.

It is interesting to note that the education system in America within the last ten years has embraced (采纳) some school schedules such as online classes, evening classes and this has allowed students to take part in afterclass activities. Many are the result of the development of technology.

It’s not actually advised to compare the American school system with that of other countries. What is important is that each country should work hard to make their education system achieve more results.

8. What do we know about the American school system?
A.It has improved greatly recently.B.It isn’t as good as we thought.
C.It will make school time shorter.D.It puts students under great stress.
9. How does the text explain the American school system in Paragraph 3?
A.By giving examples.B.By studying reasons.C.By making comparison.D.By explaining its changes.
10. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?
A.American education is trying to be more flexible.
B.More Americans can receive education.
C.Technology makes American students perform better.
D.American schools are more developed than other countries.
11. What’s the best title of the text?
A.Differences between European and Asian school systems
B.Differences between American school system and other countries’
C.Why have American kids done worse in school in recent years?
D.Is it necessary for American kids to spend long hours in school?

Scientists in England are using two selfdirected water vehicles to explore the animal and plant life of the Celtic Sea.

The Celtic Sea is a body of water off the southern coast of Ireland. The area is known for its unusual sea life. Scientists want to know why sea creatures are so attracted to this part of the Atlantic Ocean.

One of the research vehicles is powered by batteries (电池). It collects information for the National Oceanography Center in Southampton, England, and the World Wildlife Fund. The vehicle’s low energy requirements permit it to stay floating on water for up to 30 days. Reports of what it finds in the Celtic Sea are sent by satellite.

Stephen Woodward is an engineer who helped design the vehicle. He says the vehicle has equipment that can discover small organisms called zooplankton (浮游动物) and fish. He adds that other sensing equipment measures water currents and other features of sea life. The vehicle also creates a map of the sea.

Another vehicle is powered by the sun and the wind.It can stay floating on water for months. The robotic vehicle sends information about the socalled biodiversity hotspots. A biodiversity hotspot is an area of an ocean that has a lot of plant and animal life activity.

Lavinia Suberg is one of the scientists studying the Celtic Sea. She says productive ocean areas, like the Celtic Sea, attract zooplankton. The zooplankton then attracts fish. She adds that areas with a large increase of fish often attract sea mammals and birds.

Using these robotic ocean vehicles greatly reduces the cost of exploring the sea with manned laboratories. Scientists can spend more time analyzing the collected information. They say the research will give them a better understanding of the needs of the Celtic Sea for future management and protection.

12. Why do the British scientists explore the Celtic Sea?
A.To study the geography of the sea.B.To learn why the sea is rich in sea life.
C.To test their selfdirected water vehicles.D.To learn about the sea creatures in the sea.
13. According to the text, the water vehicles ________.
A.are controlled directly by humansB.work depending on the map of the sea
C.can send the information back directlyD.can keep floating on water for a long time
14. According to Lavinia Suberg, the sea mammals and birds ________.
A.are afraid of living aloneB.mainly feed on zooplankton
C.like to live in warm ocean areasD.are especially interested in fish
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.The aim of sea exploration.B.The cost of exploring the sea.
C.The importance of the water vehicles.D.Ways to deal with the collected information.
