文章大意:这是一篇记叙文,文章主要讲述作者父亲患有帕金森症和肾癌,他非常热爱画画,病情恶化也依然坚持画画并最终成功举办公开展览的故事。

My father, Michael, led me through the outside shed he’d filled with his paintings. “When I have an exhibition…” he began, pointing to the artworks he’d created, before stopping. Poor Pa, I thought.

In 1994 he’d been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease only in his forties. But after finding the right medication, he could continue on as normal and so had our family—Parkinson’s just wasn’t something we spoke about.

A husband and father to three, he had had a successful career and had always been extremely creative. Even when his Parkinson’s advanced, my father decided to attend a painting course. In art lessons, the class practised painting still life objects, like pears, but my father had other ideas. Inspired by his favourite artist, Jackson Pollock, a leading abstract expressionist, he began producing abstract pieces. He thought that it helped us to see the world in a different way. Soon, I realized he was right. When I observed my father’s works, I could interpret each of them in many ways.

While in 2019, my father was diagnosed with kidney cancer and given just three months to live. We all couldn’t contain our sadness, but we soon received great news that a new form of immunotherapy shrunk the cancer considerably. As weeks turned to months, it felt like my father was a walking miracle. To our sadness, his health battles had started to take a toll on him, and as he continued speaking about wanting to share his paintings with the world, I knew what had to be done.

In October this year, we welcomed the public to “My Kids Could Do That”, my father’s first public showing. Everyone loved his works. His eyes lit up with pride when he saw the walls filled with his works. I’ve got three of his pieces in my home and I couldn’t be more proud of what he’s achieved.

4. What can we learn about Michael from Paragraph 1?
A.He imagined his future life.
B.He held an exhibition in the shed.
C.He dreamed of sharing his paintings.
D.He showed off his masterpieces before his child.
5. Which do you think matches Michael’s painting style?
A.B.
C.D.
6. Which of the following best describes Michael?
A.Proud and selfless.B.Productive and imaginative.
C.Devoted and responsible.D.Caring and generous.
7. What is the best title for the article?
A.A Role Model: My Father
B.Determination Defeats the Pain
C.Where There Is a Will, There Is a Way
D.Enthusiasm and Optimism Pays Off in Art

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要讨论了人际关系如何影响人的寿命,作者举例说明了男女人际关系的不同表现,怎样影响到个人的寿命并分析了原因。

Look up how to increase your life expectancy (预期寿命), and you will probably see plenty of results recommending that you have a healthy diet, get sufficient sleep, work out and cut out tobacco and too much alcohol consumption. But what many of us don’t know is that our relationships also affect our life expectancy. Social integration is associated with greater life satisfaction, better health and increased life expectancy. People with wide social networks are more likely to be happy, experience fewer health issues, enjoy better mental health and to live a lot longer.

Now this doesn’t mean that we should dive head first into a relationship whenever we’re lonely in order to avoid dying young. Harmful relationships can be as isolating as being alone, so who we choose to break bread with is absolutely vital to our overall health.

Have you ever wondered why some people are single and happy, while others are drowning in suffering? Or why some married couples exist in a consistent state of bliss, while others are practically enemies?

Research shows that marriage has greater benefits for men than it does for women. Being coupled allows men to receive the essential emotional support that they would lack if they were single. They also get the added benefit of being physically taken care of thanks to the gender roles society still subscribes to.

Women, on the other hand, don’t have as much luck when it comes to being coupled. A woman in a harmful relationship is likely to experience the mental, emotional and physical consequences that come with that. On the contrary, a woman in a healthy relationship is likely to live well. Research shows that the women who are happily married tend to be coupled with partners who take on their fair share of household responsibilities.

But that’s not all, age gaps also need to be factored in to determine relationship satisfaction. Couples with wider age gaps are more likely to be harmonious compared to their peers.

8. What does the writer intend to emphasize in Paragraph 1?
A.Some health problems.
B.Ways to increase life expectancy.
C.The effect of sleep on people’s health.
D.The importance of human relationships.
9. What does the underlined word “bliss” mean in Paragraph 3?
A.Happiness.B.Kindness.
C.Loneliness.D.Friendliness.
10. What can we learn from the research?
A.Marriage benefits men and women equally.
B.Women benefit more from marriage than men.
C.Men are better taken care of because of the gender roles.
D.Good relationship can effectively prevent people from dying lonely.
11. What would be probably discussed in the next paragraph of this passage?
A.The influence of a harmonious marriage.
B.Relationship satisfaction for older couples.
C.Gender differences in marriage satisfaction.
D.The benefits of wider age gaps in marriage.

Three-dimensional printing, a technology that creates objects layer by layer, has revolutionized the way we make things. Recently, a group of Chinese scientists took things a step further by using this technology to create realistic replicas of human organs.

Previously, it was challenging to create a single material that could print different human organs due to their complexity. The research team from the Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics at the Chinese Academy of Science started by using hydrogel, a soft gel-like material as the main ingredient.

Human organs have various textures, with our brains being the softest. To replicate the hardness of materials like bone, the researchers added metallic elements to the hydrogel and adjusted their ratio to create the texture of each organ. However, the structure inside human organs is also incredibly complex with many interweaving channels. To make sure the printing results are correct, the team used light-curing technology in the 3D printing process. A special lamp was placed under the printing machine, causing the gel to become solid right after it was printed.

According to the team’s paper published in the journal Advanced Functional Materials, they were able to produce organ models including the brain, lungs, and intestines.

These 3D printed organ models are essential for research purposes, such as testing medical equipment and demonstrating surgeries.

Compared to live organs and animal models, they are also ethically acceptable since they are printed artificially. They can help researchers develop new treatments more efficiently, due to their lower relative cost, commented the Alliance of Advanced Biomedical Engineering website.

Hydrogel materials, however, usually cannot be used as transplants, because human cells are likely to recognize them as “enemies” and start to fight against them. What scientists have been exploring in “printing” the organs is bioprinting: using 3D printing technology to build up various types of cells and materials layer by layer. This way, the printed product will be more acceptable to grow inside the human body. However, this method is still developing , and experts are hoping it will be used in the medical field within a decade, according to CNN.

12. What was the main challenge in printing human organs?
A.The complexity of soft-like gel.
B.The high cost of printing materials.
C.The lack of appropriate printing technology.
D.The sophistication of human organs.
13. How did the research team ensure the accuracy of the printing results?
A.By controlling the number of metallic elements.
B.By using light-curing technology before printing.
C.By solidifying the gel immediately after printing.
D.By putting a special lamp over the printing machine.
14. What is a benefit of 3D organ models according to the article?
A.They work better than animal models.
B.They can be used to test surgical tools.
C.They can fully replace animal testing.
D.They are easily made and are affordable.
15. Why are hydrogel materials usually unsuitable for transplants?
A.They are not durable enough.
B.They can be rejected by the body.
C.They are likely to release toxins.
D.They are too hard to control during surgery.
