Ever heard of the words “one man's waste is another man's treasure? ” Nabeel Alam has taken that idea to a whole new level.

He and 26 other high school students from Durham, east of Toronto, Canada, started a company that turns unused clothes into practical reusable bags.

Nabeel said the clothing they use is in good condition, but is being thrown away because it's no longer useful or it' s out of style. By repurposing clothes(given by family and friends) heading for the garbage dump(垃圾场),Nabeel can work toward achieving his goal: cutting down on textile(纺织品)waste in Canada. "We give it a new purpose, "said Nabeel, the company' s president.

How does the company work? The students take the clothes and put them in the wash. Then a team member cuts the clothes to match a pre-drawn outline. After that, the bags are sewn(缝制)together by a sewer who volunteers to help the company.

The team puts pictures of them on their website and Instagram so people can buy them for between $8 and $12. Nabeel said the goal of the company named Vivlio Amet—is to let people know how much textile waste leads to climate(气候)change.

But Vivlio Amet will only last for a little while longer. That’s because Vivlio Amet started in October 2019 as an 18-week Junior Achievement Program project. Through the program, volunteer advisers team up with students to help them start a temporary business from the ground up.

Though the program is completely separate from school, Nabeel said it doesn't feel like extra work. “I don’t treat it like a task. It’s something I like a lot,” Nabeel said. “If you want to be successful you need to work really hard at it.”

4. What does Vivlio Amet do?
A.It rans a garbage dump.
B.It sells reusable old clothes.
C.It makes bags with old clothes.
D.It collects unused clothes for factories.
5. According to Nabeel, what is the purpose of Vivlio Amet?
A.To make pocket money for him.
B.To try his luck at running a company.
C.To call on people to avoid textile waste.
D.To set a good example for his classmates.
6. What does the underlined word “temporary” in paragraph 6 mean?
A.School-based.B.Short-lived.
C.Privately-owned.D.Half-finished.
7. How did Nabeel feel about his work for the program?
A.It was tiring.B.It was pioneering.
C.It was quite difficult.D.It was very enjoyable.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要分析了孩子说谎的问题,包括背后的原因以及家长应该如何处理。

I don’t believe lying in children is usually a moral (道德的) problem. So, I think it’s unnecessary to take it personally if your child lies.

Indeed, most kids don’t lie to hurt their parents. They lie because there’s something else going on. As a parent, what matters most is that you should know the behavior behind the lie when you know the lie in the first place. If you’re taking it personally, you’re probably angry and not clearing up the behavior that leads to the lie.

Let’s say your child didn’t do his homework, but he told you he did. When you find out that he is lying, he explains that he was playing sports with his friends after school. And that’s why he didn’t do his homework. At this point, you have a choice to make as a parent. Either you can focus on (关注) the fact that your child lied to you, or you can focus on the fact that he did not complete his homework. I strongly recommend that you focus on the underlying (根本的) behavior - the homework not being completed. As your child improves the underlying behavior, the reason for lying will go away. He won’t need to lie.

But if you shout at your child because of his lying or showing disrespect, then that’s all you’re going to be able to deal with. Your child will shut down. And you’re not going to be able to know the real problem of your child and he still can’t finish his homework and may lie again.

Your anger caused by the lie is not going to help your child change the behavior that makes the lie necessary for him. So, don’t be angry when you find your child has lieD. Remember that lying is not strictly a moral problem. Your child is lying because he doesn’t know how to get his homework done on time. You can help him work on how to finish his homework and improve his problem - solving ability.

8. What is the most important thing parents should do if they find their child lying?
A.Finding out the real cause of it.
B.Letting him know the harm of telling lies.
C.Making him promise he will never lie.
D.Showing respect for him while talking.
9. According to the author, what will take place if the parents focus on lying itself?
A.The child will study less hard.
B.The child will probably stop lying.
C.The child will share the reason for lying.
D.The child will refuse to talk about the problem.
10. How does the author support her point of view in the text?
A.By doing an experiment.
B.By making a comparison.
C.By sharing a personal experience.
D.By providing scientific findings.
11. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To encourage parents to be nicer to their children.
B.To show the bad influence of lying on children.
C.To tell parents how to deal with their children’s lying.
D.To explain why children like lying to their parents.

Smartphones are perhaps one of the things we like most or least. While they create a shared and communicative digital(数字的)experience, their use also greatly reduces the amount of direct communication we have. So, while we feel closer than ever through smartphones, research shows that we're actually lonelier than ever.

We see this situation most commonly among the youth who were born into the digital age. Phones have increased the level of isolation(孤立). Janet Behrens, principal of Iowa Valley Junior-Senior High School, noticed it in the lunchroom, where students had their heads down looking at their phones and had little conversation with each other.

Then, she created a lunchroom policy, which requires all students to leave their phones behind during Friday lunches and sit at a table with students they may not know. During Friday lunches, kids pick a card that shows which lunch table they will be sitting at that day. Each table provides ideas for conversation starters, in case students have trouble thinking of things to talk about with kids they might not know.

Anyone who knows teens knows that they are likely to refuse to follow this kind of forced socialization(合群). So they may not quickly agree with such an idea. However, the new program is different. After taking a few weeks to get used to the new program, kids are kinder to each other and they actually look forward to Friday lunch hour. Sahara Kanke, a ninth grader, said, “I think it's fun. I was a bit confused when I first knew the program. But I like doing it now. People are nicer to each other now because they got to know each other at lunch.”

Policies like this are important. ABC News reported that students who use phones and computers less during class scored half a grade higher than students with smartphones. Due to the advantages of reducing smartphone use among the youth, schools around the world have been testing different methods to help students overcome the difficulties.

12. What does the author say about the smartphones?
A.They have caused a waste of study time.
B.They enjoy great popularity among young
C.They provide lots of interesting activities for people.
D.They can both improve and weaken connections among people.
13. What does the underlined word “it" in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Students' dislike of school food.
B.Students' loneliness brought by smartphones.
C.Students' refusing to follow some school rules.
D.Students' making new friends through the Internet.
14. What can we learn about the new policy?
A.It aims to get students to share their problems.
B.It can improve students' problem-solving ability.
C.It calls on students to stop chatting online at school.
D.It encourages face-to-face communication among students.
15. What does Paragraph 4 suggest?
A.It is pretty difficult to get along with teenagers.
B.It is challenging to carry out the new program in school.
C.The new program has drawn students closer to each other.
D.Young students were glad to join the program at the beginning.
