Bamboo is one of the nature’s most surprising plants. Many people call this plant a tree, but it is a kind of grass.
Like other kinds of grass, a bamboo plant may be cut very low to the ground, but it will grow back very quickly. A Japanese scientist recorded one bamboo plant that grew almost 1.5 meters in 24 hours! Bamboo grows almost everywhere in the world except Europe. There are more than 1,000 kinds of bamboo that grow around the world on both mountains and plains(平原).
Not all bamboo looks the same. Some bamboo plants are very thin. ____________________________________________________. This plant also comes in different colors, from yellow to black to green.
Many Asian countries have been using bamboo for hundreds of years. They often use bamboo for building new buildings. As a matter of fact, the cables(绳索) that hold up the hanging bridge across the Min River in Sichuan are made of bamboo. The bridge has been in use for more than 1,000 years, and is still holding strong.
In Africa, engineers are teaching poor farmers how to find water using bamboo. These African countries need cheap ways to find water because they have no money, and their fields often die from no rain and no water. It seems that bamboo is one of the best things they can use. Bamboo pipes and drills(钻) can help to make the poor thirsty fields to be watered.

B.It grows everywhere.
C.It grows quickly after its cut short.
D.It is short and green.
2. The underlined sentence “while others may grow to more than 30 centimeters across.” means “Some other bamboo plants may grow to be very _______.”
A.shortB.longC.thickD.tall
3. Why did the engineers teach the poor farmers in Africa to make use of bamboo?
A.Because it is cheap.
B.Because it is colorful.
C.Because it drills fast.
D.Because it is used by Asians.
4. Which of the following is NOT true?
A.There are many different kinds of bamboo with different colors.
B.Cables made of bamboo can last for over a thousand years.
C.Bamboo can be used for buildings, bridges and watering projects.
D.Bamboo plants are able to grow well in any part of the world.

文章大意:本篇是一篇说明文。有机耕作是一种利用自然界的产品循环利用的工作方法,这种方法越来越受到人们的青睐,优点是环保无害;缺点是产量少,从长远看,有机耕作更好。

Organic (有机的) farming is a type of agriculture that benefits from the recycling and use of natural products. Use of dried plants not only saves money, but also ensures the growth of crops. The technique is characterized (具有……的特征) by the use of green manure (肥料), biological pest control methods and special farming techniques to keep soil productive. Limiting the use of manmade chemicals or completely doing away with (去掉) them reduces the risk of diseases. Today, organic farming is a major and preferred industry around the world. Organically grown products have a huge market, with farmlands covering about 10% of the total world farmland. The initial effort made by Sir Albert Howard, the Father of Organic Farming, has paid off.

Advantages of Organic Farming:
1. The economics of organic farming are characterized by increasing profits (利润) through reduced water use and reduced soil erosion (侵蚀).
2. Organic farming produces the same crops as those produced through traditional farming methods, but uses half the energy, and holds 40% more top soil.
3. Farming the organic way enables farmers to get rid of weeds without the use of any chemicals.
4. The use of green pesticides (杀虫剂) is environmentally friendly and does no harm to human’s health.
Disadvantages of Organic Farming:
1. Organic methods of farming produce less, compared to traditional farming techniques.
2. Organic agriculture does little to fight global climate change. Though organic farming practices are recognized as giving out less CO2, but not to a significant degree.
However, though there are some disadvantages to organic farming, farms where organic methods for cropping have been used have more advantages than traditional farms. Organic agriculture is surely better in the long term.
5. Organic farming uses the manure made from ________.
A.expensive soilB.dried plants
C.harmful pestsD.manmade chemicals
6. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 shows that Sir Albert Howard ____.
A.worked hard for nothing
B.succeeded in organic farming
C.spent all his time on organic farming
D.didn’t expect organic farming to be successful
7. According to the passage, compared to traditional farming, Organic farming ________.
a.is more environmentally friendly
b.produces a lot more food
c.uses less energy
d.results in more weeds in the farmland
e.is better for human’s health
A.abcB.acdC.aceD.bce
8. The author’s attitude toward organic farming is ________.
A.anxiousB.hopeless
C.unclearD.optimistic

I grew up in Malaysia. Since we did not have many toys, we used rubber bands (橡皮筋) to make a jump rope. Three years ago, when my daughters Michelle and Theresa were 9 and 12 years old, they were making bracelets (手环) using rubber bands. It struck me that I knew how to do that. I like to impress my daughters and show them that their dad is cool, so I tried it too. To my surprise, I couldn’t work with the bands because my fingers were too big.
Since I studied engineering, I decided to come up with a solution (解决办法). I ran down to my basement and found a piece of wooden board, some pushpins and hooks (图钉和钩子). With the help of these things, I managed to make a bracelet. One of my daughters said, “Wow, that’s cool, but I can make it by hand.” So I started to put two, three, four, five rows together. I crossed the bands into diamond patterns using rainbow colors, which is how the Rainbow Loom (彩虹织机) got its name.
My daughters were so excited that they showed the bracelets to their friends. We started to get requests for them. But they were still difficult to make. I thought, “If I can make a small, easy-to-use loom, I’m onto something big.” It took six months and a lot of support from my kids to perfect the idea.
I tried to sell the loom by making videos about how to use it and taking my daughters to stores to show it. Many store owners thought it might be too difficult to use. For a year, we sold it only on our website. When it became popular with kids, it got noticed by toy stores.
It is so exciting that a simple idea my kids and I came up with together at our living-room table has become a nationwide fad.
9. The author tried to show his daughters how to make bracelets but _____.
A.was refusedB.regretted
C.failedD.was misunderstood
10. The author made up his mind to find a method of _____.
A.making bracelets
B.using a jump rope
C.impressing his daughters
D.inventing the Rainbow Loom
11. The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refers to _____.
A.loomsB.bracelets
C.friendsD.rainbows
12. What did store owners think of the author’s invention at first?
A.They thought highly of it.
B.They had a long wait for it.
C.They showed a great interest in it.
D.They thought there was no market for it.

On Jan 15th, 2015, Justin Valdez, a college student, was shot in a subway station in San Francisco. The surveillance video(监控录像) showed that before Justin was killed, the killer pulled out his gun several times, and even wiped his nose with it. However, nobody noticed the killer. The surrounding passengers all focused on their cell phones.
We may see the same scene everywhere in our life: in subway stations, restaurants, elevators and so on, people are watching their cell phones. From a family reunion to a date with a friend, people couldn’t stop checking their twitter and facebook on the cell phones, ignoring the persons in front completely. Phubbing(低头症) not only involves young people, but also the elderly and kids.
“Phubbing” is a new term which comes from the words “phone’’ and “snub(冷落)”. It describes the habit of snubbing someone in favor of a cell phone. The word “phubbing” was included in the Australian National Dictionary in 2012. Obviously, the indifference(冷漠) and rudeness of the information age are spreading globally. A Stop Phubbing campaign website has been set up. You can find the slogan of the website as follows: “stop twittering, stop posting photos…enjoy your food, enjoy the music and respect others.”
Phubbing appears harmless. However, it does influence our life. Jimmy, an epicure(美食家), wrote in his blog: “I can no longer focus on what I am eating since I started twittering. My skill of food photography has improved very fast, while my interest in food drops as a result.”
Let us put down our cell phones and re-enjoy the real taste of our food and the warmth of interpersonal communication.
13. The case of Justin Valdez is given in the first paragraph to show
A.gun violence happens easily in the US
B.phubbing may lead to terrible disasters
C.the killer didn’t mean to kill him
D.the killer had made a careful plan
14. Jimmy’s words suggest that
A.phubbing is actually harmless
B.phubbing stops people enjoying their life
C.phubbing affects people’s eating habits the most
D.phubbing helps people improve their photographic skills
15. What is the text mainly about?
A.How the word “phubbing” came into being.
B.The popular campaign of stop phubbing.
C.The meaning of the word “phubbing”.
D.The great harm of phubbing.
