Have you ever thought how good it would be if an unfinished handwork project, which stopped because the owner passed away, could be lovingly completed?
Friends and knitters (编织者) Jennifer Simonic and Masey Kaplan started the Loose Ends Project in September 2022. The pair match “volunteer finishers” with unfinished projects online so they can carefully complete them and then return them to the people they were being made for.
It all started when founders, Simonic and Kaplan, realized that they had both been asked by friends to finish knitting hats, sweaters or other unfinished projects started by their dead moms. When more friends asked them for help, they felt it would be a good idea to “have strangers be able to finish things for each other”.
Helping strangers this way, which also assists them to get through their grieving process, was something that the two had happily agreed to do understanding how wonderful it feels to be dressed in something a loved one has created.
Adding a touching couple of extra steps, once the finishers receive the project, they may highlight the last stitch (针) worked by the dead maker in a special way before they restart the work.
In just a few months, Loose Ends has built up a global team of over 7,000 volunteers. New volunteers are asked to share their skill sets and interests,. When Loose Ends receives a project, the founders identify a good fit based on these skills. The Loose Ends team will let the volunteers try the work to “check if they’re feeling it too”, as Simonic and Kaplan never want the work to be a chore.
Volunteers do not charge for their work, while families are only asked to cover the shipping costs. The group tries to match projects to volunteers living nearby to reduce the shipping costs to the lowest.

Animal populations across the world have been reduced by 69% in less than 50 years, according to a new scientific report. The report’s authors are calling for urgent action to restore the natural world.
The Living Planet Report (LPR) is produced every two years by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the Zoological Society of London. The most recent report, released on October 13, 2022, shows that almost 70% of the world’s monitored wildlife was lost between 1970 and 2018. The report is based on research from 195 countries around the world. Data was collected from almost 32,000 populations of 5,230 species.
Although the average global loss of wildlife is 69%, the rate is greater in the global south. Latin America and the Caribbean in particular have seen the sharpest fall, having lost 94% of their wildlife since 1970. Across the world, the biggest drop was in freshwater populations of wildlife — including almost 1,400 species of mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles — which have decreased by 83%.
The report identifies several causes for wildlife loss, including hunting, farming, the loss of forests, pollution and climate change. However, the report also promotes solutions, such as designing less destructive food production systems, urgently protecting the Amazon rainforest, limiting the use of fossil fuels, and creating new laws to protect our natural environment.
Commenting on the report, Marco Lambertini, director general of WWF International, called the figures “terrifying”, and said “we need to help nature recover and not simply halt its loss.” In December 2022, world leaders are meeting in Montreal for the 15th UN Biodiversity Conference, also known as COP 15. The authors of the LPR say that this is an opportunity for a global plan to deal with wildlife loss and restore nature. “Government leaders must step up at COP 15,” said Lambertini. “The world is watching.”
8. What does the author mainly want to show by listing the numbers in the first three paragraphs?A.The causes of the urgent situation. | B.The seriousness of wildlife loss worldwide. |
C.The detailed process of the research. | D.The drop in freshwater populations of wildlife. |
A.Stop hunting and farming. | B.Not permit the production of wildlife food. |
C.Replace the fossil fuels with renewable energy. | D.Offer legal protection of natural environment. |
A.Accept. | B.Fear. | C.Stop. | D.Suffer. |
A.Concerned. | B.Indifferent. | C.Positive. | D.Satisfied. |
Scientists have created a new tool that can turn people’s thoughts into words. It works by using an Artificial Intelligence (AI) program to translate brain activity into words. The scientists say the program could help people who cannot speak because of damage to the brain.
Alexander Huth, a team leader of the scientists, says, “We’re engaged in the study and are looking forward to the benefits the study can bring to people.”
The study involves two main parts. The first is a scanner (扫描仪) that allows the scientists to record brain activity. The second is an AI system that the researchers train to turn videos of brain activity into words.
To record brain activity without surgery (外科手术), Alexander and his team used a big machine called FMRI, which uses strong radio waves to create pictures showing which parts of the brain are active. FMRI can record the activity of the brain as it happens. To translate these recordings into words, they used an AI tool called “GPT-1”. It guesses which word is most likely to come next, based on the facts and details that came before.
The researchers first trained GPT-1 on lots of stories people had told about their lives. Next, they trained it to make connections between brain scans and spoken words. Then a test was done on three human volunteers to see whether the AI tool really worked. Each person spent sixteen hours in FMRI listening to stories. The people imagined the stories as they heard them, and FMRI recorded their brain activity. GPT-1 then used these recordings of brain activity to make connections between the words and ideas in the stories and the brain activity of the listeners.
Alexander found the words GPT-1 guessed were very similar to the words in the story that the people were listening to. Although the words weren’t exactly the same, they often carried the same meaning.
Alexander says that GPT-I is the first AI program to turn what people are thinking into words without brain surgery. The program isn’t something that can be easily used today, mainly because of the size and cost of FMRI.
12. Who is the AI program targeted at?A.Health experts studying human brains. | B.Volunteers performing medical service. |
C.Doctors in need of advanced equipment. | D.Speech-disabled patients with brain injury. |
A.Previously gained information. | B.Processed radio waves. |
C.Instructions from the scientists. | D.Videos of brain surgery. |

B.FMRI Has Been Used and Won Public Recognition. |
C.Scientists Are Training AI to Read Human Thoughts. |
