My 10-year-old son and two friends attended a 2-hour fantastic basketball camp on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. A few minutes before the session ended, there was a shooting contest. Only a few kids were chosen to compete, and my son was not one of them. The contest winners received prizes and recognition, as did a few kids chosen as “all-stars” for effort, skill and participation. Again, my son was not selected.
My son was struggling to deal with his disappointment.
At the camp, he played a basketball game with kids he had never met, guarded them fiercely and took shots easily against them. As his mom, I was thrilled that he spent the day without his iPad. All in all, the day felt wonderful. The last thing I wanted was for these awards to ruin the experience.
I decided to simplify it for him. I did the math and figured out the shooting contest and awards were about 6% of the total camp. The rest of the camp, the parts that he enjoyed, were 94% of the day. Even though the kid loves math, it was hard for him to see the contests and awards as a small part of his day.
My son once told me about a negative situation that played out at recess(课间休息). The way he explained it felt like the disagreement lasted hours, but it turns out it was only the last few minutes of recess.
Now is the time for me as the parent to help my kids think more positively. If my son leaves a half-day camp and most of the day was great —that’s a win. If our family is able to go to Florida over winter break and enjoy time together, away from the everyday headaches, that’s also a win. We can acknowledge the aspects that disappoint us, as long as we are willing to then focus on the bigger picture.
It starts with me and my husband. Our kids will model the behavior we show. They need to see us thinking positively and not hyper-focusing on the negative 6%.

The neurotransmitter dopamine (多巴胺) is calling forth a lot of panic these days. According to books, articles and social media posts, our urge for a quick dopamine hit is why we desire cookies and spend too much time on Instagram. If we keep giving in to these desires, as the principle goes, we’ll never be able to stop ourselves.
Scientists who study dopamine say these concerns have been blown out of proportion. They “are not necessarily based on actual science of what we know about dopamine,” said Vijay Namboodiri, an assistant professor of neurology(神经学) at the University of California, San Francisco.
In the 1990s, scientists realized that dopamine is more closely related to the expectation of a reward than to its receipt. Dopamine causes the wanting of something and the motivation to go and get it, not the enjoyment of it. “What we think it maybe does is something like desire,” said Talia N. Lerner, an assistant professor of neuroscience at Northwestern University.
Some rewarding behaviors can cause problems in people’s lives. Activities like gambling and playing video games can lead to patterns of behavior similar to those seen in substance use disorder (SUD)— namely, continuing the activity despite severe negative consequences.
But that is the exception, not the rule. “For some people, yes, this is a problem,” Dr. Lerner said. “It’s not a problem for most people. We can function in the world and enjoy this reward-rich world.” As with most things related to health, the key is not going extreme. And while dopamine is involved in addiction, to say that it’s only dopamine is an oversimplification. In fact, experimental attempts to treat addiction by transforming dopamine activity in the brain haven’t worked.
“There’s not necessarily a healthy or unhealthy way to use dopamine,” Dr. Lerner said. “It’s just about learning. And you can always learn something good, you can always learn something bad.” Or, as Dr. Lerner put it, “dopamine is our friend, not just our enemy.”
8. Which of the following is closest to “blown out of proportion” in Paragraph 2?A.Neglected. | B.Overstated. | C.Justified. | D.Unfounded. |
A.It is a rewarding behavior. | B.It leads to final enjoyment. |
C.It means an addictive activity. | D.It is a disease caused by abusing. |
A.Treating it in a reasonable way. | B.Fighting against it like an enemy. |
C.Changing its activity in the brain. | D.Enjoying the rich reward it brings. |
A.Dopamine, a receipt of joy. | B.Dopamine, a severe addiction. |
C.Dopamine, a desire for a reward. | D.Dopamine, an over-concerned matter. |
What time is it on the moon?
Since the dawn of the space age, the answer has been: It depends. For decades, lunar missions have operated on the time of the country that launched them. But with several lunar explorations heading for the launchpad (发射台), the European Space Agency (ESA) has believed the current system unsustainable and is considering giving the moon its very own time zone.
The main objective of establishing a universal timekeeping system for the moon is to streamline contact among the various countries and entities, public and private, which are coordinating trip s to and around the moon.
The M1 lunar lander built by the Japanese company Ispace is set to arrive on the moon in April. Last year, China completed construction of its own space station and previously suggested that Chinese astronauts would be on the moon by 2030. These missions will not only be on or around the moon at the same time, but they will often be interacting as well. For all those interactions to happen smoothly, the missions will need to operate on a standardized time.
At the same time, the international team looking at establishing a lunar time zone is debating whether a single organization should set and keep time on the moon. Clocks run faster on the moon than on Earth, gaining about 56 microseconds each day. The exact difference depends on the position of the clock and whether it is in orbit or on the lunar surface.
Anyhow, efforts are being made to develop a base and support human habitation on the moon. The goal of setting a universal timekeeping system is to improve cooperation across all space agencies. The effort is part of a larger project to create a complete communication and navigation system for the moon. The international space agencies will need to be prepared to settle on a time zone before the proper time zone can be identified, and a thorough research study is required for this.
12. Why is the ESA considering giving the moon its own time zone?A.The present time system is regarded as ineffective. |
B.The time on the moon is changing with the space age. |
C.The M1 lunar lander is set to arrive on the moon in April. |
D.Lunar missions have operated on the moon’s own time zone. |
A.By quoting experts. | B.By giving examples. |
C.By listing statistics. | D.By making comparisons. |
A.The plan. | B.The cause. | C.The future. | D.The challenges. |
A.Indifferent. | B.Doubtful. | C.Objective. | D.Critical. |

It was the day of the class election, a moment I had anticipated(期待) for weeks. This time, I was determined not to experience another defeat as I had had the year before. I had made more posters and written a better speech. I had been through a whole year of high school, met more people and made more friends. By working hard on class committee activities all year, I had proved my worth even without a job title.
I made my way to the center of the room, feeling a rush of growing anxiety as I prepared to address my large class. Introducing myself with a smile and listing my achievements, I hoped nobody could tell that my calm exterior(外表) did not match how I felt inside.
As I delivered my speech, the well-prepared two-minute time limit felt like an hour. Finishing my speech with a slogan, “Please believe me and vote for me,” I almost shrank, realizing it might not be a smart move.
I made my way back to my chair, trying to remember how to sit gracefully in a skirt. My hands were shaking so much that I had trouble holding on to my speech. I barely noticed the teacher call the name of my opponent(对手), who was now walking up to read his speech. I tried to listen, to compare, to predict my chances, but I had too many other thoughts flying through my head.
I looked at the faces opposite me. My friends smiled at me and gave me an encouraging thumbs-up sign when they caught my eye. As each of the next candidates read their speeches, I debated my chances in my head.
I remembered my loss the previous year. I was depressed for an entire weekend. This time, I would not get my hopes up.
Finally, it was time for me to head down to the office to hear the results.
