Verkhoyansk, a town in northeastern Siberia, about 6 miles within the Arctic Circle, recorded a temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) on June 20. 2020, likely setting a new record for the hottest temperature recorded that far north.

The new record comes as Siberia—and the Asian continent as a whole—have experienced unusually warm conditions since the start of this year. The whole region has been off-the-charts warm lately. And while it’s difficult to know the impact of climate change on individual records or temperatures in any given season, experts say the developments are part of a broader warming trend that has been documented across the globe.

The sudden movement of heat is being caused by high-pressure ridge (脊)of air—sometimes called “heat dome (穹)” that is blanketing the area. When this happens, air gets squeezed into one location and sinks, pushing warm temperatures down to the surface.

The high-pressure ridge also prevents clouds from forming, so sunshine comes through without being weakened by clouds. North of the Arctic Circle when that temperature was observed, they had 24 hours of daylight, so they were receiving solar energy for those entire 24 hours.

The town of Verkhoyansk is known for having the biggest extremes between winter and summer than any other city in the world, with their average high temperature minus 47 degrees Fahrenheit in winter In June and July, their average temperature is close to 70 degrees. In their climate history, they’ve been above 90 degrees over 150 times, and above 95 degrees at least dozen times.

“Since the start of the year, we’ve been noticing that Asia— particularly northern Asia, like Russia—has been extremely warm,” —said Ahira Sanchez-Lugo, a climatologist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Centers for Environmental Information. Forecasts suggest that this part of Siberia could see at least another week of above-average temperatures before things stabilize. But conditions in Asia have been warmer than usual for most of 2020.

A.Verkhoyansk is the hottest town in the world.
B.The largest extremes in Verkhoyansk are more than 95 degrees.
C.Northern Asia takes the lead in global warming.

There you are, looking through your WeChat moments or your Weibo feed, and you come across a post like this: “I just got accepted to Harvard AND Oxford! Are they sure they didn’t mix my applications with somebody else?!”

This person is clearly humblebragging. The tem “humblebrag” was first coined back in 2010 by the late US comedian Harris Wittels, and it describes when someone makes a seemingly modest statement, but the actual purpose is to bring attention to something they are proud of.

The example above is a humility-based humblebrag. The person wants to tell others: “I got accepted to Harvard and Oxford!” However, they don’t want to seem too arrogant. So instead, they word it in a way to be more modest and bring down the importance of their achievements.

Although people who humblebrag think it will make them more likeable because they aren’t loudly boasting about their triumphs, a study showed that humblebragging actually has the opposite effect.

“Humblebragging backfires because it seems very fake. That ‘woe(悲伤)is me’ attitude combined with self-promotion does not lead to a favorable impression,” said Ovul Sezer. “Even simply bragging or complaining is better, because at least those messages are seen more sincere.”

Sezer’s study also found that nearly 60 percent of humblebrags were complaint-based humblebragging, with most people humblebragging about their looks, followed by their money or wealth, and finally about their performance at work.

“It’s such a common phenomenon. We all know some people, whether in social media or in the work place, who do this annoying thing,”   commented Sezer, adding that we all do it to some extent.

So, if you want to share your achievements with others. what’s the best way to do it then?

Sezer suggests that people “admit their self-promotion and harvest the rewards of being sincere”. She also suggested finding a wingman: “If someone brags for you, that’s the best thing, because then you don’t seem like you’re bragging.”

8. Which of the following can be regarded as humblebragging?
A.Bringing people’s attention to your achievements.
B.Bragging about your achievements on social media.
C.Being hesitant to talk about your achievements.
D.Pretending to be modest when talking about your achievements.
9. What does the underlined word “backfires” most likely mean in paragraph 5?
A.Is impressive.
B.Relates to self-promotion.
C.Leads to a heated debate.
D.Produces disappointing result.
10. What’s the difference between humility-based humblebragging and complaint-based humblebragging?
A.Their purposes.
B.Their audiences.
C.The way they achieve aims.
D.The content mentioned.
11. What does Ovul Sezer suggest people do when it comes to sharing achievements?
A.Promote themselves after someone else does.
B.Be honest when talking about their achievements.
C.Publicize their achievements in a hidden way.
D.Find someone to share achievements with.

“Don’t be a helicopter parent.” This message has been repeated frequently and others try to encourage parents to back off their kids and give them greater space and freedom to explore. But it doesn't actually tell parents how they should act. What kind of parenting style should be adopted in place of the overprotectiveness of helicoptering?

One possible answer is, “Be a lifeguard parent.” That means sitting apart from the action and keeping an eye on everything that’s going on, ready to jump in if needed. This was brought up by Dr. Mariana Brussoni, a developmental psychologist at the University of British Columbia and Richard Monette, editor-in-chief of Active for Life. They think life guarding should include three parts.

Open attention is the stage parents should be in most of the time, showing a caring interest in what kids are doing, but keeping their physical distance and remaining non — intrusive (不介入的). Focused attention is when a parent perceives (察觉) warning signs and becomes more alert. Maybe it’s time to check in with the child to see how they’re doing. It might be a good opportunity to help the child think through their actions, rather than directing them. Most of the time, play goes back to being safe and the parent can return to open attention. Active intervention is when a parent needs to step in to reduce immediate risk. A child might not realize they’re close to the edge of a busy road or deep water, so the parent has to ensure their safety.

Brussoni says most of a parent's time should be spent in open attention. Days could pass, without ever entering focused attention. Active intervention should be extremely rare. It’s crucial to avoid telling kids to be careful all the time. This sends a message that the child can’t do things without parental assistance.

No one said parenting was easy, but it can be less unbearable if you let go of some control, teach your kids to do things independently, and trust them to self — regulate. Everyone comes out happier in the end.

A.Warn parents not to overprotect kids.
B.Introduce another parenting approach.
C.Remind parents to give kids more freedom.
D.Make a comparison between two parenting styles.
13. What will a lifeguard parent probably do?
A.Accompany kids as little as possible.
B.Tell kids to be aware whatever they are doing.
C.Direct kids when they are climbing a thin branch.
D.Urge kids to leave a heavy traffic road immediately.
14. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Parenting has been the toughest job since ancient times.
B.Allowing parents to self-regulate may be of great benefit
C.Less control may lead to a harmonious parent-child relationship.
D.Child should be taught to things all by themselves to grow up.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Don’t Be a Helicopter Parent.B.Teach Kids to Identify Risks.
C.How to Guarantee Kids’ Safety.D.Strive to Be a Lifeguard Parent.
