Ballet for children and teenagers

It can take a long time to reach a professional level in ballet, so most dancers begin their training very young. It is essential that very young dancers learn the ballet movements properly right from the beginning.     1     This is because it is usually more difficult to change old habits than to learn new ones.

The first thing that young children who are interested in learning to dance often do is attend creative movement classes, where they can practice basic skills like jumping and turning, and just have fun.     2     In addition, some people recommend that they should learn either to sing or play instrument.

Young people who decide they want to have a ballet career can attend a dance school. Here, students not only study normal school subjects but also do daily dance training.     3     And the whole dance-school environment is set up to support the young people’s artistic development; it allows them to focus on their dance more easily, and prepares them for their future. But how can a young dancer and their parents tell which dance school is the most suitable?     4     The older students taking part in it should clearly have more highly-developed ballet skills than the younger dancers.

By the time they are 16 or 17, many ballet dancers are entering ballet competitions and taking classes at professional studies.     5     It is important for young dancers to know how well they are doing, because the dance world is very competitive and the training is hard; not everyone makes it to the top.

A.For all these reasons, they enjoy meeting other dancers.
B.Listening to different styles of music also helps.
C.Travelling long distances to dance schools can be tiring, too.
D.Attending one of their public performances is a good way of finding out.
E.If they develop poor techniques, they may have problems later on.
F.This allows them to compare themselves with teenagers from other schools.
G.That means they do not waste time travelling from home to dance classes.

Many people believe that classical music is not relevant music is not relevant to young people today . However, this issue (问题) frequently causes heated debate.
Some people say that classical music is associated only with old people .For example, if you look at the audience at a classical concert , the majority is over the age of fifty.
Others say it is more popular than we first imagine . Many young people listen to classical music without realising .It is often used in films and advertisements. For example.a famous piece of classical music was used as the theme music for the 1990 World Cup . Not many people could have given its name , but millions enjoyed it .
Also, some people point out that young people produce new music based on classical ideas: for example, it is said that rap(说唱)music was invented by a classical musician in 1912, but it is now used by young people in pop music.
However, young people point to the fact that classical music has been outstripped(超越) by technology. To play a classical instrument, such as a violin, you need to study hard and practise for hours. Nowadays, you don't need to get aching arms from practising. A teenager can write and make music using a computer program in the comfort of their own bedroom.
A final point to in mind is that the term "classical music" is used to refer to a great variety of music, from jazz to pieces   for large orchestras(管弦乐队).This makes it even more difficult to say whether classical music is relevant to young people.
So, it may be only a minority of young people who play classical instruments , but when it comes to enjoying classical music, it depends on the piece of music. It may be more relevant to young people in the modern world than they realise!

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章主要介绍一项研究结果表明,演奏乐器可以增强长期认知能力。

【推荐2】From strumming a guitar next to a campfire to entertaining guests with a piano piece at a formal dinner, being able to play a musical instrument is unquestionably rewarding. Studies comparing the mental abilities of musicians and non-musicians often show that musical training is related to small, but significant, cognitive (认知的) benefits even when other factors, such as social and economic status, are accounted for. Indeed, there is evidence that just two years of such training enhances cognition.

However, it has remained unclear whether these enhanced cognitive skills are just temporary.

It is difficult to determine if cognitive changes associated with learning how to play an instrument remain throughout a person’s lifetime. On a single day in 1947, the Scottish movement tested the intelligence of almost every 11-year-old child who attended school in the country. Researchers at Edinburgh University’s Reid School of Music realized it was not too late to ask the original participants about their musical experiences.

The researchers developed a questionnaire that collected information about lifetime musical experience. This was completed by the surviving members who returned to the study for further testing in 2018. The participants were asked how many instruments they played and what their training was like. They were also asked to record how many years of regular practice they had and what performance level they had reached. A total of 366 members provided usable information and 117 revealed that they had some degree of experience with musical instruments.

Overall, the researchers found that a significant positive relationship existed between playing an instrument and change in cognitive ability over time. More specifically, the more years and more hours of practice with an instrument that a person had, the more likely they were to show a positive cognitive change over the course of their life. Precisely why learning to play a musical instrument has these effects remains unclear. The researchers theorize that driving people to regularly use a mix of focused attention, co-ordination, auditory-motor skills and memory results in advantageous cognitive changes.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了一个学校乐队在指导老师离开后,学生们自己组织和管理乐队,并成功地进行了第一次公开表演的故事。

【推荐3】Last year, there were 38 student members and a full-time teacher in the school band. But over the summer, the director took another job and the school board had no applicants for the vacant position.

“It was such a downer,” remembers Jadyn Lane. “But we were given a choice — we could sign up for other electives (选修课), or find a way to make the band work.” Most students signed up for other electives, but 10 students decided to stay.

“It wasn’t an option to quit,” says Hailey Fitzgerald. “I’ve been in the band for seven years. I love it! It’s too important for too many reasons.” The students elected Hailey as director, a position she accepted on the condition they would all work together and share responsibilities. They recruited Casey Griffith and Jennifer Nail-Cook to be their official faculty advisors. Casey did the paperwork, and Jennifer helped with the music.

They directed themselves. Front and center on the band room whiteboard are a set of rules which they created themselves. In addition, they made a calendar (日历) of their upcoming events, like football games. It included a daily countdown to each event so they’d be prepared.

Perhaps most importantly, they decided which instruments were necessary to make a band of this size work. Most of them were drummers. How could they play those instruments with the people they had? “Several members switched instruments and some even learnt brand new ones,” Hailey says.

The time came last month for their first public performance. It was a home football game against Richwood. They had no idea what to expect. Would it work? Would the crowd cheer them on? Would they cheer up the football team? To their surprise, a group of students made posters for the band and hung them at the entrance to the football field. “We thought some people didn’t even know we still had a band,” says Jadyn. But their classmates had been paying attention and wanted to make their first game special. And their school won.

1. What do the underlined words “a downer” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Something rewarding.B.Something demanding.
C.Something frightening.D.Something disappointing.
2. How did the members overcome the challenges?
A.They redefined their roles.B.They sought help from parents.
C.They learnt to beat drums.D.They joined the football team.
3. What can be learnt about their first public performance?
A.It drew little attention.B.It was a huge success.
C.It won lots of bonuses.D.It was a total mess.
4. Which word best describes the remaining members?
A.Confident.B.Sensible.C.Devoted.D.Ambitious.
