In between all the measures to battle the severe air pollution in Delhi,India, there’s one more option-a bar that has”pure air”.

Founded by Aryavir Kumar,Oxy Pure,Delhi’s first-ever oxygen bar, offers 15 minutes of 80-90 percent pure oxygen, costing Rs 299($4.2).Customers are given a lightweight tube for oxygen intake. The device(装置)is placed near the customer’s nostrils(鼻孔)through which they are advised to breathe in the oxygen.

The bar also offers its customers several aromas(气味)to go with oxygen, including lemongrass, cherry and more.According to the aroma people choose, each session promises to improve sleep patterns and digestion, cure headaches, and even claims to work as a treatment for depression.

Bonny Irengbam,a senior sales assistant at the bar, said,”Some people, who try it for the first time, will feel relaxed and fresh. But only people who do this regularly will get real benefits.By regularly,I mean once or twice a month. We don’t encourage back-to-back sessions,as increased levels of oxygen in the body can make a person dizzy.”

Dr.Rajesh Chawla,a senior doctor at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, said,”Even if you breathe in the so-called pure oxygen for two hours in a day,you will go back to breathing the polluted air for the rest of the 22 hours. The concept is purely money-driven.”

Recalling the first few months of the bar,Irengbam admitted that people were sceptical. “Many people criticised, saying we were selling air.Others were simply scared to breathe through the tube.”

Irengbam said the bar saw a significant rise in the number of customers two to three days after Diwali,an Indian festival mainly celebrated by fireworks and lights,as the pollution levels were high.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了污染的种类、起源以及对污染的控制等。

【推荐1】There are many kinds of pollution, which can be classified by environment, including air pollution, water pollution, and land pollution. Modern society is also concerned about specific types of pollution, such as noise pollution, light pollution and plastic pollution. Pollution of all kinds may not only have negative effects on the environment and wildlife, but also do harm to human health and well-being.

Although environmental pollution can be caused by natural events such as forest fires and active volcanoes, use of the word “pollution” generally means that the wastes have an anthropocentric source — that is, a source created by human activities. Pollution has accompanied humankind ever since groups of people first congregated and remained for a long time in any one place. Indeed, ancient human settlements are frequently recognized by their wastes, Pollution was not a serious problem as long as there was enough space available for each individual or group. However, with the establishment of permanent settlements by great numbers of people, pollution became a problem, and it has remained one ever since.

By the middle of the 20th century, an awareness of the need to protect air, water, and land environments from pollution had developed among the general public. In particular, the

publication in 1962 of Rachel Carson’s book Silent Spring focused attention on environmental damage caused by improper use of pesticides(杀虫剂)such as DDT. In response, major pieces of environmental law and regulation were passed in many countries to control the environmental pollution.

Great efforts are made to limit the release of harmful substances into the environment. Unfortunately, attempts at pollution control are surpassed by the scale of the problem, especially in less-developed countries. Noxious levels of air pollution are common in large cities. To control the pollution completely, we still have a long way to go.

1. What does paragraph 1 mainly talk about?
A.The history of pollution.B.The types of pollution.
C.The causes of pollution.D.The effects of pollution.
2. What is the original cause of pollution according to this passage?
A.Human activities.B.Forest fires.C.Volcanoes.D.Natural disasters.
3. What statement is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Natural events such as forest fires and active volcanoes can’t cause any environment pollution.
B.Pollution was a serious problem as long as there was enough space available.
C.Pollution of all kinds do no harm to human health and well-being.
D.permanent settlements by great numbers of people made pollution become problem ever since.
4. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A.No measures have been taken by the government to control the problems of pollution.
B.The book Silent Spring helped to improve the awareness of protecting the environment.
C.Silent Spring concentrated on the improper use of plastic bags.
D.The pollution has been controlled in less-developed countries.

【推荐2】Human activity is changing the surface and temperature of the planet. But new research shows it is also changing the sound of the Earth’s oceans and seas. Scientists say the changes in the sounds of our oceans, seas, and other waterways affect many marine animals (海洋生物) —from very small shrimp to huge whales.

Sound travels “very far underwater,” Francis Juanes told the Associated Press. Juanes is an ecologist at the University of Victoria in Canada. “For fish,” he explained,“sound is probably a better way to sense their environment than light.”

Sounds help fish and other marine animals survive. They use sounds to communicate with each other. Sounds also help some ocean animals find food and avoid their hunters. Many ocean animals use sounds to find good places to mate.

However, increased noise from humans is making it harder for these animals to hear each other. The noise is corning from shipping traffic, motorized fishing ships, underwater oil and gas exploration, offshore construction and other noisy human activities. “For many marine animals, their attempts to communicate are being blocked by sounds that humans have introduced,” said Juanes.

Experts at NOAA say that effects of noise on marine mammals are not well understood. However, some studies suggest that noise may cause hearing loss. The stress from human noise might also affect the immune (免疫) system—an animal’s natural defense system.

“When people think of threats facing the ocean,” said Joe Roman, a marine ecologist at the University of Vermont, “we often think of climate change, plastics, and overfishing. But noise pollution is another vital thing we need to be monitoring.” “If you make something for the ocean,” Joe Roman suggested,“think about how to make it quieter. In theory (理论),you can reduce or turn off sound immediately. It’s not like plastics or climate change, which are much harder to get rid of.”

1. Why is sound important for ocean animals?
A.It makes them travel far in the sea.
B.It guides them to find their mates.
C.It helps them locate food and avoid danger.
D.It keeps them stay away from offshore construction.
2. What does the underlined word “blocked” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.preventedB.destroyedC.causedD.monitored
3. What can we infer about Joe Roman’s opinion?
A.Marine animals are being monitored.
B.People pay equal attention to noise pollution.
C.Noise pollution is theoretically easier to deal with.
D.Plastics is the most serious threat for ocean animals.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Sound Is Important to Ocean Life.B.The Future of Oceans Exploration.
C.The Changes in the Sounds of Oceans.D.Humans Are Making Oceans Too Noisy.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了太空碎片的危险正在迅速增加,为了减少地球轨道上的碎片数量,有人提出对卫星运营商使用轨道路径收取年费或税费。

【推荐3】Orbital structures are becoming increasingly important for worldwide communications and a new generation of technologies. But scientists are warning that the danger of space debris (碎片) is rapidly increasing. Space debris can include pieces of old rockets, non-operational satellites, lost tools and other items. They are threatening spaceships, satellites and space stations.

In an effort to reduce the amount of debris orbiting the Earth, a group of economists at the University of Colorado at Boulder proposed a yearly fee, or tax, on satellite operators for their use of an orbital path. The group’s study on the subject appeared recently in the publication Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Matthew Smith helped write the study. He said in a statement: “Space is a common resource, but companies aren’t responsible for the cost their satellites impose (迫使) on other operators when they decide whether or not to launch. So we need a policy that lets satellite operators directly cover the costs their launches impose on other operators.”

Akhil Liotta was the lead writer of the study. He said most of the proposed solutions to the problem have been based on using technology to clear away the debris. But, Smith said, removing debris only means that operators will launch more satellites, and an international agreement calling for a yearly fee or tax would push companies to be more mindful about launching further objects into space.

Christopher Burgess, a professor of space law at Northumbria University in Britain, said that imposing a space tax could be tricky. He noted that such a cost could be seen as a restriction on the free use of space, and the effort to place a fee on the use of space could easily be slowed by the many details involved.

1. According to the text, what concerns the scientists at present?
A.The high cost of cleaning up space.B.The increasing risk of space debris.
C.The safety of communication systems.D.The practical effects of new technologies.
2. What did some economists suggest to solve the problem mentioned in the text?
A.Strengthening control over space stations.
B.Allowing companies to use space for free.
C.Charging satellite operators orbital use.
D.Using advanced devices to collect space debris.
3. Why does Christopher Burgess think the economists’ idea could be tricky?
A.It would lead to an argument.B.It would eventually be rejected.
C.It is impossible to carry it out.D.It is hard to put it into practice.
