In South Korea, students pay for classes in everything from K-pop auditions (韩流试镜)to real estate (房地产)deals. Now, top Korean firms are using artificial intelligence (AI) in hiring, and job-seekers want to learn how to beat the robots.
From his basement office in Seoul, career consultant Park Seong-jung is among those in a growing business of offering lessons in handling recruitment screening by computers, not people. Video interviews using facial recognition technology to analyze character are key, according to Park.
"Don't force a smile with your lips," he told students looking for work in a recent session, one of many he said he has conducted for hundreds of people. "Smile with your eyes".
Classes in dealing with Al in hiring, are still a tiny part of the country's multi-billion-dollar cram school (补习学校)industry. But classes are growing fast, operators like Park's People & People consultancy claim, offering a three-hour package for Up to 100,000 won ($86).
There's good reason to see potential. As many: as 8 out of every 10 South Korean students are estimated to have used cram schools, and high youth unemployment in the country—nearly one in four young people are not in the workforce—offers a motivation not present in other countries where cram schools are popular, like Japan.
One AI video system reviewed by Reuters asks candidates to introduce themselves, during which it spots and counts facial expressions including "fear" and "joy" and analyses word choices. AI hiring also uses "gamification" to judge a candidate's personality and adaptability by putting them through numbers of tests. Preparing for such tests doesn't necessarily involve simply memorizing answers. Some games don't even have a 'right answer', as they are aimed to spot the problem-solving attitude of the applicant.
Consultant Park said he gave Al firing talks to more than 700 university students, graduates and lecturers in 2019. In an online chat room monitored by Park, with more than 600 participants, numerous messages indicate thanks for the classes and success in AI interview quests. "Students are struggling from the emergence of AI interviews. My goal is to help them be fully prepared for what they will be dealing with," said Park.

I want to share highlights of music therapy, which helped my family find outlets and insights through our “extremely painful journey”.
My father, Joe Altman lived his life with strength and determination. As complications associated with diabetes diminished his physical capabilities, his unbeatable will to fight the disease completely hammered away. A WW II Navy Seal, Joe Altman lived by a simple rule: when you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot (结) and hang on.
When dementia struck hard and violently broke through Dad’s spirit, music therapist Alessandro Ricciarelli entered his life. Armed with six strings attached to a wooden guitar, Alessandro surpassed (超过) the capabilities of the most advanced medical technology.
Each time Alessandro walked through the door, an invisible wall formed around them, creating a comfortable space in which a trusting bond of friendship would quickly form. Alessandro brought with him happiness, encouragement, added a sense of meaning and purpose to Dad’s life, and, in doing so revived (使复原) his spirit. In a most gentle way, Alessandro treated Joe with the greatest dignity and respect.
Alessandro’s action was not limited to actual hospital visits; he took personal time to learn songs that were relevant to Dad and made recordings of their sessions together to be enjoyed at any given time. Alessandro appreciated the power of positive thoughts, and with his kind words, a smile, compassion (同情), and a true desire to make Dad happy, he encouraged Dad’s participation, leaving us with cherished memories of my father having one last chance to express himself through music, smiling and enjoying life.
In a very real sense, Alessandro was that knot at the end of the rope on to which Dad grabbed. I am forever grateful to the Music Therapy Programme at NYU Medical Centre, more specifically, to Mr. Alessandro Ricciarelli.

While most people want jobs, few look forward to being interviewed. Job interviews are stressful situations for even the most qualified candidates because applicants have only one opportunity to show that they will do better than the other applicants in the position they are seeking.
Applicants should research the company and learn about it as much as possible. They should not just focus on the department that may hire them.
Applicants should be careful about their non-verbal (非言语的) communication. Gestures, expressions and actions can speak a great deal louder than any words. For example, the interviewers notice an applicant glance at his or her watch or cell phone during an interview.
Although an applicant can never see precisely how an interview will go on, careful planning, detailed answers and attention to non-verbal communication will make the process of applying for a job more likely to be successful.
A.Instead, they should get to know the company as a whole. |
B.They expect a good answer that they have never heard before. |
C.Therefore, they need to pay attention to the way they use gestures. |
D.To ensure a better chance for the job, consider the following advice. |
E.To approach a job interview successfully, applicants should prepare well. |
F.Applicants should consider ways to make their answers unique so that they will stand out. |

Of course, technology plays a role. Social media helps filter out (滤掉) opposing views. People find phone calls disturbing and ignore voice mail, preferring text or wordless emoji. But tech is not the only blame. High schools and colleges rarely, if ever, offer classes or activities that teach careful listening. Traffic noise on city streets and music playing in shops exceed (超过) the volume of normal conversation by as much as 30 decibels (分贝), and can even cause hearing loss.
So how can we recover the lost art of listening? After years of studying and consulting, I discovered that listening goes beyond simply hearing what people say. It also involves paying attention to how they say it and what they do while they are saying it, in what context, and how what they say resonates (与……共鸣) within you. It’s not about merely holding your peace while someone are talking. Quite the opposite. A lot of listening has to do with how you respond — the degree to which you assist in the clear expression of the other person’s thoughts and in the process, express your own.
Good listeners ask good questions. Good questions don’t begin with “Wouldn’t you agree...?” or “Don’t you think…?” and they definitely don’t end with “right?” The idea is to explore the other person’s point of view, not sway it. It is not right to put your own thought into others’ head. You also want to avoid asking people personal and evaluating questions. Instead, ask about people’s interests so that they feel more connected than if they spend time together finishing a task.
The reward of good listening will almost certainly be more interesting conversations. Attentive listeners receive more information, related details from the speakers, even when the listeners didn’t ask any questions. We are, each of us, the sum of what we attend to in life. And to listen poorly, selectively or not at all limits your understanding of the world and prevents you from becoming the best you can be.

According to the Beijing subway passenger regulations, which went into effect on May 15th, passengers except babies and the sick are no longer allowed to eat or drink on the subway. Violators (违规者) who do not stop after being asked to will be asked to get off. The violation will also be recorded in the violators’ credit record.
Some support the rule. The reason is that the smell of food and drink can annoy other passengers. “The smell of food fills the carriage, causing people discomfort, especially in the hot summer. Besides, eating on the subway produces rubbish. And on the subway, people often spill their drinks,” said Zheng Yiou, 17, a student from Hefei.
However, others question this rule. “Some citizens live so far from their work places that they have limited time to have breakfast before they go to work. Eating while they travel saves them time and decreases the chance that they will be late for work,” He Songlin, a 17-year-old student from Chengdu said. “And some people, like those with low blood sugar levels, get sick if they can’t eat when they must.”
Other Chinese cities like Nanjing and Chengdu have similar regulations. Some foreign cities also ban eating and drinking on the subway. For example, eating and drinking have long been banned on the subway in Washington, D. C. Singapore fines people who eat or drink on the subway up to 500 Singapore dollars.
Chen Yanyan, a professor from Beijing University of Technology, believed we should consider the need of some people to eat or drink on the subway. “Commuters (上班族) and travelers are sometimes too busy to eat. Maybe we could learn from Tokyo, where there are many subway stations equipped with services, allowing passengers to eat and drink,” she said.

This probably explains why dog ownership increased last year because people spent more time at home during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown.
It was demand for puppies in particular that saw the biggest increase. Who couldn’t resist their playful personalities, adorable eyes, and super-soft coats?
However, as demand for a new pooch increased, so did the price tag. Popular breeds, such as Cockapoos and Cocker Spaniels, saw even sharper price increases, and puppies have been selling for £3,000 or more.
Animal welfare charities fear that high prices could encourage puppy farming, smuggling (贩卖) or dog theft. And a BBC investigation found some breeders have been selling puppies (幼犬) and kittens on social media sites — something charities have called “extremely irresponsible”.
But despite some new owners purchasing a dog legally, maybe from a rescue centre or registered breeder, they’ve proved to be ill-prepared for life with a new pet, and the pet itself has found it hard to come to terms with life in a new home. Animal behaviourists in the UK have reported a surge in requests to help dogs suffering from fear-aggression (害怕攻击) after their lives have been turned upside down.
Looking to the future, there are concerns about the welfare (幸福安康) of these much-loved pets. Ian Atkin, manager of the Oxfordshire Animal Sanctuary in the UK, told the BBC: “At the moment, the dogs are having a great time, but separation anxiety could still surface when people go back to work.” And Claire Calder from the UK’s Dogs Trust rescue charity says “the economic situation also means that some people may find they can’t afford to look after a dog.” The message is not to buy a puppy in haste and to pick one that fits into your lifestyle.
1. Why did dog ownership increase during the coronavirus pandemic?A.Because people were looking for companionship and exercise. |

There is evidence that they were used for food and for medicine by Native Americans beginning around 1000 B. C. The seeds from sunflowers were likely brought to Europe by Spanish explorers around the late 16th century. Over time, they found their way to Eastern Europe. Today, Ukraine is the world’s leading producer of the plants. Sunflowers are grown for their seeds and to make oil.
If you start growing sunflowers from seeds, put them in room-temperature water for 2-8 hours before planting to start the growing process. Plant each seed into dirt 2.5 centimetres deep and 15 to 30 centimetres apart. Plant them after the danger of frost has passed or start indoors three weeks before your last frost date. Keep the soil wet, but not too wet, until the seeds begin to grow.
Sunflower plants can be moved outdoors when the danger of frost has passed in your area. Choose a place outside that will provide the plants with at least 6- 8 hours of direct sunlight each day.
As the plants grow, they will develop long roots that work their way deep into the ground. So, before planting, it is important to loosen the soil. Dig at least one third of a metre down and remove any rocks.
Mixa large amount of compost (堆肥) into the soil where the plant will grow. Compost provides important, lasting nutrients that will help the plants all season long. The sunflowers may not need additional nutrients if they are planted with compost. If compost is not added during the planting process, provide nutrients through a slow release, all-purpose fertilizer (肥料) one or two times during the growing season.

The 26-year-old woman, who prefers to be called Dai, had been experiencing discomfort in her lower back for the past two months. The discomfort later became unbearable pain during extended periods of sitting.
News of the incident quickly gained attention on Sina Weibo. Some users humorously commented that while some people may be alive, their butts have already “died”. Others expressed concern about their own inactive lifestyles and the possibility of developing the syndrome.
“Dead butt syndrome” mainly happens when the gluteus medius (臀中肌), one of the three main muscles in the buttocks, weakens due to long periods of sitting. This weakening can damage the muscles’ability to work properly, leading to poor shock absorption and reduced motion control of the hip and leg. The syndrome is becoming a more common disease without people’s noticing.
Medical professionals have offered precautionary (预防的) measures for the syndrome, stressing the importance of staying physically active. For individuals who sit for long periods, it is recommended to stand up and stretch the body periodically, walk around, and keep the gluteal muscles active throughout the day.
A simple rule to follow is to stand up and move for at least 10 minutes every hour of sitting to reactivate the gluteal muscles and prevent them from becoming “inactive”.
There are three simple self-diagnosis (自我诊断) steps for the syndrome: flat and floppy butts, discomfort in the waist, hips, and knees after long time of sitting, and an inability to keep the upper body upright while performing a deep squat (蹲) with both hands extended overhead. If someone shows all these symptoms, there is a possibility that they have developed the syndrome. Furthermore, if individuals experience worsening lower back pain after long periods of sitting, seeking professional medical help is advisable.
1. Why is the woman’s case mentioned in paragraph 1?A.To introduce the topic. |
B.To make the text interesting. |

Moon had already learned several of the existing reading systems for blind people. At the time, there were various types of “embossed letters”, which were ordinary Roman letters that stuck out of the page for increased ease of touch. There was James Hatley Frere’s “Frere system” made up of various shapes and symbols, with each based on a particular sound. And there was the still-familiar Brailles (布拉耶盲文), which had been introduced a few years earlier.
Afterwards, he found problems with each of them — especially when he tried teaching them to adults. Embossed Roman letters were too confusing due to their numerous lines and complicated foms. The Frere system, while simpler, was filled with numerous contractions (缩略) and encouraged incorrect pronunciation. Braille, although useful to children, is found unsuitable for adults, especially those with calloused (长茧的) fingers.
In 1845, in response to these problems, Moon took matters into his own hands. He invented a new method, which soon became known as Moon Type or Moon Code. The Moon System is also based on Roman type, but each letter is simplified into a basic set of lines. By removing extra strokes (笔画) the shapes are left open and clear to the touch. The new system also arranges pages of text as the Frere system does — the first line is printed left-to-right, the next right-to-left, and so on.
Early experiments were promising. “Many people’s attempts to learn by other systems proved futile, but they made it easily with the help of Moon Code,” he wrote. “Many of those, who could read before losing their sight, have learned it in one lesson.”

Even as a child, I was always goal-centered and loved the feeling of accomplishing things, and every January 1st, I would sit down and write out my resolutions (目标) for the upcoming year. And what resolutions they were! I always picked big goals, like: In the New Year, I will lose 50 pounds! And run a marathon! And study scripture (圣经) every day!
The problem? I’d start out strong, but by February or March, I’d be out of willpower and I’d slide quietly back into my old habits. Every winter, I’d feel guilty and ashamed, looking back at all of the amazing things... I think one of my biggest problems with New Years resolutions was wanting to “dream big” but not having the skills and ability to do those things.
Now I take the opposite approach I’m all about the little goals. First, little goals are easy to set. Instead of saying I’m going to run a marathon, I’ve decided I’m going to run 20 minutes three days a week. Second, little goals are easier to accomplish. Every time I check one of my mini goals off my list, I feel a burst of pride and accomplishment. It’s a great feeling, and I don’t have to wait until the end of the year to enjoy it!
The other great thing about making small goals instead of resolutions is that you can build small goals on top of each other, adding the achievements together. For instance, recently I decided to make sure I ate five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. After a few months, this became a solid habit.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) spreads so easily that more than 90 percent of people have experienced their first infection (感染) by the age of 2. It usually causes cold-like symptoms but can lead to severe illness in young children and older people. All around the world, about 60,000 children under the age of 5 and 14,000 people over the age of 65 die each year after developing the virus.
Developing vaccines against RSV and other respiratory viruses has been difficult because the respiratory tract (呼吸道) is a surface exposed directly to the outside world, says Kirsten Spann at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia.
“It’s harder for antiviral antibodies (抗病毒抗体) in the blood to reach viruses in the respiratory tract, or even know they are there, because there is some physical separation,” she says.
In recent years, however, there has been rapid progress in finding new ways to improve immunity against respiratory viruses.
Several RSV vaccines are being tested in clinical trials, including one made by German company Bavarian Nordic. Its vaccine is designed to build immunity against RSV by exposing me body to five small fragments of the virus.
In a clinical trial involving 420 adults aged 55 and older, a single injection (注射) of the vaccine in the upper arm increased the levels of RSV-fighting antibodies inside the nose by three times and caused no serious side effects.
This immune response lasted for six months ---- enough to cover a winter cold season ---- and was restored with a booster shot at 12 months.
The results are promising, but more research is needed to see if the immune response is strong enough to prevent RSV infections, says Spann.
Bavarian Nordic is now planning a bigger clinical trial of its RSV vaccine that is scheduled to begin in 2021 and will involve more than 12,000 adults. If the results are positive, the company hopes to make the vaccine available by 2024. The firm plans to offer the vaccine to children too, but not until it has passed clinical trials involving people in this age range

The most difficult cut in stained glass is called an inside cut. Basically, it’s a curved line where you throw away the part inside of the curve. The problem with inside cuts is that the edges of the curve tend to break off when the pieces of scored glass are broken apart.
As the artist talked about inside cuts, he said, “The glass will break into pieces if you try to cut too much off at once. The best way to do an inside cut is to slice off smaller curves piece-by-piece. In fact, it’s not just the best way lo do it, but it’s the only way to do it.”
How many times do you try to make a big change and cut the entire piece at once? We convince ourselves that we can do this all the time. We’ll commit to transforming our diet overnight or we get inspired to launch a business in a weekend or we finally get motivated to work out and push ourselves to the edge of burning out.
Why not approach your goals and dreams like a stained glass artist? Starting by slicing a shallow curve and breaking a small piece off, you cut a slightly deeper curve and break that off until you have your full inside cut. By slowly cutting deeper and deeper curves, you prevent the glass from breaking as it change shape.
Of course, change isn’t easy — no mailer how you do it. Slow gains are boring, but if we keep making small improvements, then pretty soon we will end up with a beautiful masterpiece on our hands instead of a bunch of broken pieces.
1. Why is an inside cut believed to be most difficult?A.It needs a one-and-only design. | B.It calls for nothing but inspiration. |
