One evening, it was raining and the wind was blowing hard. An couple came to a small hotel and wanted to stay there for the night. An middle-aged man welcomed them, but because an important meeting was to be held in the town the next day, all rooms were occupied. So he explained, “I’m sorry, but our rooms here are all full and so are the other hotels nearby because of a meeting to be held tomorrow.”

Hearing his words, the old couple felt very disappointed and turned around to leave. Just as they were leaving, a young man came up to them and stopped them, “madam and sir, if you don’t mind, you can sleep in my bedroom for a night.” “But where will you sleep tonight?” the old couple wondered. “Please don’t worry. I can stay with my friend.” Having no other choice, the couple accepted his kind offer.

The next morning, the couple took out a large sum of money and gave it to the young man, but he refused to take it.

“No, you needn’t pay me any money, lending a room is really not a big deal.” said the young man with a big smile on his face.

“You are great, young man! It’s very kind of you. Maybe one day I will build a hotel for you.” said the old man. With these words, the old couple left. The young man only laughed and went on working.

Several months later, the young man got a letter from the couple, inviting him to go to New York. The young man met them in front of a five-star hotel, which had been bought by the old couple. Clearly, the old couple turned out to be very rich.

“Do you still remember what I said to you several months ago? Look, it is the hotel that I bought for you to thank you for putting us up.” Soon, the young man became the manager of the hotel and he became rich too.

My grandfather had started experiencing major problems with his left eye due to his old age. He had visited the hospital on many occasions to seek treatment, but his condition was not getting any better. Finally, his doctor told him the only way left was to go for eye surgery as a way of trying to correct the abnormality with the eyes.

Since it was a weekend and I had no classes on that day, I thought it would be a good idea to accompany my grandfather to the hospital rather than to stay home and be bored despite the fear I had of surgeries and hospitals in general.

My uncle drove us to the hospital. After ensuring that my grandfather bad checked in, he had to leave for an important appointment. Luckily, there were several helpful nurses available to offer any assistance that my grandfather required, and the doctors were very friendly. Even though things were taking their natural course, the situation was tearing me apart. I guessed the nurses sensed the high level of nervousness that both my grandfather and I had at that moment. They talked to us nicely so that we ended up relaxing and seeing the surgery as something normal and nothing to worry much about.

Before long, both my grandfather and I felt relaxed and ready for the surgery, as we forgot the high degree of nervousness we had felt just a few moments earlier. I have always had this fear of doctors and injections so even as I began to relax, thoughts of the upcoming surgery were drilling my mind. I knew the surgery would be more serious than the injections that I feared so much as well. In an hour or so, I was just sitting on the couch and waiting while the nurses were preparing my grandfather for the surgery.

As children, my brothers and I constantly annoyed our mother. When we combined forces, we had the power to make that sweet, loving woman go mad.

One day, I arrived home from school feeling overheated, exhausted, and angry with my brothers for being kicked out of the car and walking home alone. Taking a few steps inside, I dropped my books and realized the house was a little too quiet. Looking around, my anger turned to weariness, and suddenly I felt a fierce stream of water glide (滑动) across my shirt. Before I realized what happened, another blasted(轰炸) me directly in the face. I dove behind the couch as I heard my brothers yell, “Water fight!”

Running to the other side of the room where my own water gun was hidden beneath a loose floorboard, loaded and ready to go, I grabbed it and congratulated myself on being prepared in advance.

Instantly, my anger with my brothers disappeared, and I eagerly joined in the water spraying. We didn’t stop until we were nearly wet all over and out of water. Calling a truce (休战), we decided to team up and take on a larger, more dangerous enemy. While taking turns reloading our weaponry, we hatched(策划)our plan.

Our mother was outside watering the garden, totally unaware of the danger approaching her from behind. We silently counted to three and began showering her with water. She turned around and stood still as we finished the last of our supply. Only when she thought our guns were empty did she dare to speak a word. However, when she began to lecture us, a water ‘bullet’ shot from my gun, smacking(猛击) her right eye, and she lost her temper.

We ran to the living room with our mother close behind and barely reached the door in time to shut her out. She began pounding on it and shouting at us to let her in, but we had no idea that this was all an act. She actually had her own plan.

As a senior editor in a famous press, I always think of days twenty years before when I was 18, I lived with my grandparents, and my parents earned their living in another city, struggling to support our family. I had taken to delivering newspapers to support myself and my education.

I would be up every morning by 5 am and walk five kilometres from where I lived to the newspaper office. By 6 am, I would collect 50 copies which must have weighed over five kilograms. My delivery range spanned (横跨) three kilometres. After distributing the copies, I would rush home—another three kilometres away—cook my breakfast, and be off to my school.

One Friday morning, I got home after my deliveries, finding Afzal, a boy from the neighbourhood, at my doorstep. Afzal said his mother wanted to see me. When I asked him why, Afzal said, “She will tell you.” Tired after walking around for over 11 kilometres, I was looking forward to breakfast and some rest. I assumed his mother wished to subscribe (定期订购) to the newspaper, so I followed him to his home nearby.

A woman in her 40s opened the door. I later learned she was Afzal’s mother, Mrs Kader. She asked me to sit, pulled up her chair next to mine and gently asked, “Tell me about your routine, right from the time you wake up in the morning.” I wasn’t quite sure why she wanted to know, but I told her about my morning job in a few words. She asked me, “How many miles do you walk every day?” I replied, “A little more than 11 kilometres.” My reply shocked her.

Then she patted my back and went inside, reappearing carrying a large plate full of food for breakfast for me. It was a heart y breakfast, one that brought back memories of happy days spent with my parents. Later, as I was about to leave after thanking them, Mrs Kader asked me to wait and she went inside again.
