Most of us celebrate our birthday with birthday cakes. We probably sing a song, play some fun games, and maybe even open a few presents. Have you ever wondered exactly why we do these things, though?    1

Most scholars point to the Bible as the earliest known reference to a birthday celebration.    2    Rather than the day Pharaoh was born, however, the celebration was probably held to remember the day when Pharaoh became the King.

It wasn’t until the time of ancient Rome that birthdays were celebrated for common people.    3    Women’s birthdays weren’t celebrated until about the 12th century.

Our modern birthday celebrations with a party and cake didn't come around until the late 18th century in Germany. In fact, Germany is usually considered the birthplace of the modern birthday cake.     4    After the Industrial Revolution, however, cakes were cheaper and more widely available.

If you’re curious about when we started singing “Happy Birthday to You”,that didn’t happen until the 1920s.    5    It was a song written in 1893 by two teachers, Patty and Mildred Hill, for children to sing in the mornings. In 1924, Robert Coleman published a songbook in which he included “Good Morning to All” but changed the lyrics (歌词) to what we now know as “Happy Birthday to You”. It’s now considered the most recognizable song in English.

A.It mentions Pharaoh's birthday.
B.What is the most common birthday?
C.The song got its start as “Good Morning to All.”
D.When did birthday celebrations begin anyway?
E.Even then, these celebrations were limited to men.
F.So we were born on this day a certain number of years ago.
G.Early on, birthday cakes were usually only available to the wealthy.

There are mainly three kinds of etiquettes in China.

The first category is the daily life etiquette: including meeting etiquette, introduction etiquette, conversation etiquette, banquet etiquette, reception etiquette, dance etiquette, etiquette of gift giving and etiquette of visiting a sick person.

The second category is the festival customs and festival celebration etiquette: including Spring Festival etiquette, Tomb-sweeping etiquette, Dragon Boat etiquette, the Double Ninth Festival etiquette, Mid-autumn Day etiquette, wedding etiquette, funeral etiquette and birthday celebration etiquette.

The third category is the business etiquette:including conference etiquette, negotiation etiquette, guest welcoming and seeing-off etiquette, and knowledge of negotiation taboos, etc.

There is also etiquette of public relations, etiquette of public affairs, etiquette at home and job search etiquette, etc. Here we just talk about the first category of the main Etiquette of China.

Etiquette of Gift Giving: The most common situations for presenting a gift are at festivals, weddings, birthdays. It is also appropriate to express gratitude, for sending-off relatives and friends, and to return a favor. The most important thing in presenting a gift is to show intention.

As the saying goes, a goose feather sent from thousands of miles away is a present little in size but rich in meaning. One should choose and purchase a gift according to his own economic conditions. In this way, the gift receiver will accept the gift with ease of mind if he knows the real situation he is in. Attention should be paid to this point. When presenting a gift, one should wrap it with exquisite wrapping paper. This not only shows there has been much thought entered into the gift, but also raises the curiosity of the gift receiver.

Etiquette of Visiting a Sick Person:  The Hospital is a special site for healing the wounded and rescuing the dying. Therefore, before going to a hospital, one should have a clear understanding of the ward the sick person is in and the bed number so that you do not make inquiry at all places and hence disturb the state of being quiet in the hospital. Before visiting a sick person, it is best to prepare a gift.

Wedding Etiquette: Nothing is happier than two lovers getting married in life. Getting married is one of the great joyous events in life. As a friend who takes part in the wedding reception, you should choose and purchase a gift in advance. It is best that the gift has some meaning. For example, sending ninety-nine roses stands for “everlasting”, or sending a golden congratulation card of memorial value and a wedding cake to express your gratitude and good wishes.

Birthday Congratulation Etiquette:  Birthday congratulation is actually congratulating on one’s birthday. When congratulating on an elder’s birthday, you have to pay more attention to etiquette as there will be slightly more formality. When congratulating a friend of the same generation on his birthday, you don’t have to comply with formality and present a gift. In the case of congratulations on an elder’s birthday, apart from being particular about clothing, you must bring a gift which contains the meaning of health and longevity, such as an exquisitely designed cake or a memorial gold congratulation card.

Funeral Etiquette: The traditional funeral has heavy and complicated ceremonies and trivial procedures. Now a memorial service is generally held to show condolences for the dead. Attention should be paid to some etiquette when taking part in a memorial service. In order to honor the memory of the dead and show concern and sympathy for his family members, you should present a wreath. (590 words)

【推荐2】My brush was tiny, more like something you’d use for nail polish. That was suitable because I was struggling to paint the toenails of my dragon shadow puppet (皮影戏偶). Mao Zhongbo, our teacher, noticed my struggle and showed me how to keep my brush from becoming overloaded with pigment (颜料). It was an unexpected personal touch from the resident master at a Beijing hotel.

Shichahai Shadow Art Performance Hotel is a step back in time. Surrounded by a forest of skyscrapers, this little inn is in a hutong. Once you open its massive wooden doors, you enter a calm space that direct your gaze to the framed shadow puppet art that decorates the walls. The mission here is clear: to educate guests about a dying part of Chinese culture before it’s too late.

I visited here last winter. As a theater lover, I hoped to get a behind-the-scenes look into a completely different performing art. The inn provides English interpreters who help make the cultural offerings accessible to its foreign guests. These include performances in the private puppet theater at the hotel and several classes taught by master Mao.

One night, I watched Mao and several other hotel employees perform the classic tale “Turtle and Crane”. The animals’ flexible movements made me forget that puppeteers controlled them. Afterward, I tried my hand at controlling the many sticks needed to make each puppet move effortlessly. My awkward attempts to operate several sticks at once showed why it takes years to master something that looks simple.

I asked Mao whether anyone could learn to be a shadow puppet performer. He paused, then answered, “Like ballet, some have a talent for this and some don’t. Making a puppet seem real comes from the hands, the heart and the brain. It also takes passion.”

At the end of my stay, I went to the lobby to get my dragon shadow puppet. I noticed Mao giving a class to a group of local youngsters, confirming me in my belief that he would inspire a new generation of masters.
