There is a nice family living in Valladolid, a beautiful city in Spain.     1    father, Jose Garcia, is a tall and friendly man. He     2    （work） in a famous company. He married Teresa, a     3     （beauty） woman,     4    dark eyes and light hair. She is a     5     （teach） of a primary school. Jose and Teresa have three     6     （child）: Susan, Rebecca and Juan. The     7    （old）, Susan, is 24 years old. She's a doctor and busy with her work every day. She     8    （usual） goes to work at 8 a.m. and comes home after 7p.m. Rebecca, a beautiful girl with big dark eyes, is 19 years old and     9    （study）Chinese in the Canary Islands. Juan, a naughty 11-year-oldboy, dreams of     10    a great football player. They are a happy family.

Is there such a thing as being ＂over-protective＂?

I can honestly say that my answer to that question     1     (change) dramatically(戏剧性地)since I became a parent.

Before the birth of my daughter, I taught at     2     private school, often viewing my students as over-protected, worrying     3     would happen when they went on to middle schools.

Some did fine, and some did not. Some needed constant pats on the back, words of     4     (encourage) and extra support, which I     5     (happy) gave. Others were content on their own, needing little or no interaction(互动)with their teacher.     6     for the most part, graduates would go on for higher schooling.

I’d always supposed their parents were over-protective, for they were the ones that still walked their     7     (five) graders into the classroom and met them at the school gate.

Admittedly, I laughed at those parents,     8     (think) their children would never learn to be     9     (independence) if they didn’t let go just a little. Then I had my own daughter. The moment I looked at her little face, I     10     (know) I’d do everything in my power to protect her and make sure she always felt safe!

Tiger Parents Do No Good to Kids’ Development

Digging through kids’ school bags, looking up all the assignments, sitting beside them going through each item, and finally     1     (have) all the homework checked with a name signed is a daily routine for most Chinese parents, as     2     (require) by teachers. A demanding task especially after a long day’s work at office, isn’t it?    3     (luck), some parents in Jinhua, Zhejiang Province, have been liberated. A local primary school has recently announced that parents will no longer have to sign their names on their kids’ homework, as students should be responsible     4     their own assignments.

Making mistakes is     5     essential part of the process of understanding. Who cares how much you     6     (score) in your homework after you have settled down in life and found your directions? The     7     (able) to realize one’s mistakes and learn from them is what matters, which is also the main purpose of education.Why not give students a chance     8     (find) out and correct their mistakes themselves?

It is by no means parents’ duty to go through the kids’ assignments.     9     parents are supposed to do is to create a friendly studying environment for kids, and teach them to be an independent learner. After all, independent learning is much     10     (important) than high scores.

Devote yourself to the work you do, not the prize you might get. Hao Jingfang, a Tsinghua University alumna, is pursuing her passion for writing and education. In 2016, she     1     (win) the prestigious Hugo Award with her novella, Folding Beijing,     2     made her the first female writer in China to bring home this prize. Later on, the author turned to education. She set up Tongxing Academy for public welfare education and WePlanets to foster     3     (child) creativity after school.

“The major task for society is to help people get better education, to elevate their skill set in line with future technological advancements,     4     to broaden their horizons,” Hao said.

Since     5     (found) her company, Hao has been carrying     6     voluntary teaching programs in rural areas. “We really want these kids to have such quality education resources     7     kids from the cities do,” she said. “We hope that the children from rural China, if one day they manage to live in the cities, can do more than car maintenance, for example. They will have the skills to take on other jobs.”

Different from the typical Chinese parents so ambitious for their children, Hao suggests giving kids more space for     8     (try) and error. “I do believe the best mentality for parents is to stand behind your children,” Hao said. “Let the child cope with the reality and decide for themselves. If they struggle with obstacles, you can offer them some guidance or encouragement.”

Being an economic researcher,     9     writer and entrepreneur herself, she encourages all women to discover their passions. “We live in a big, big world with boundless possibilities, various trades and different vocations. Don’t be too afraid to try something new. When you find the one thing that you want to commit to, you will become     10     (fear) to follow your dream.”
