Living alone is hard, especially for old people. Besides, some old homeowners might have trouble bringing food and articles of daily use in from a car. Or they might need someone to tell them where they’ve put their house keys.

College students are trying to find cheap, comfortable places to live without borrowing even more money from a bank. Dorms(宿舍) are a choice for some, but they often come with crowded bathrooms, shared bedrooms. And sometimes university housing is even more expensive than local apartments. A Canadian organization, Toronto HomeShare, noticed both of these problems and came up with a way to solve the problem.

College students usually deal with some housework and provide company while living in comfortable environments without breaking the bank. The old benefit from it spiritually. Nick, a 27-year-old graduate student who lives with 75-year-old Maureen Tara, said, “Coming back home to Tara’s family helps me recover because it’s such a relaxed environment here. If I’ve had a hard day and I’m feeling low, there’s lots of love in the air.”

The level of care that older housemates need is different. Joshua is in a poor state of health. His son thanks the college student living with his dad for his help in dangerous situations when he’s not around. “At least, there is someone to talk to my dad,” says Joshua’s son. Students who’ve moved to a new city, far from their families and the comforts of a home-cooked meal, also need to find peace in their living situation.

Boston’s Nesterly is a homeshare app for senior/student living pairings, and people living in St. Louis’s Skinker DeBaliviere neighborhood can take part in Homeshare St. Louis. The advantages of senior/student homeshare program are clear, and they might just make college students wonder why this wasn’t a choice when they were sharing crowded dorms with others.

【推荐1】Four Unusual Houses around the World

The Keret House (Poland)

You may know this structure as the world’s skinniest house since it measures only 122 centimeters at its widest point. The project started with an idea that architect Jakub Szczesny first presented at the World Architecture Festival in 2009. The house has no windows but is semi-transparent and has a white interior which allows it to feel a lot less tiny than you'd think.

The Tree Hotel (Sweden)

The structure is a cube-shaped building which wrapped around the trunk of a tall tree. Its exterior is coated with mirrored glass which allows it to perfectly blend in with its surroundings and to reflect the sky and the trees. The interior is made of plywood and offers 360 degrees of the landscape. To reach the entrance, one has to go across a rope bridge connected to the next tree.

Resident Church XL (The Netherlands)

The Saint Jakobus Church dating back to 1870 ceased to function as a church in 1991 and was later used as a showroom for events and furniture displays. Then, in 2007, Zecc Architects came with an idea. They wanted to transform the church into a residence and to bring this beautiful historical monument back to life. The idea was materialized two years later.

The Steel House (The US)

Robert Bruno worked on this amazing project until his death in 2008, handcrafting everything with no outside assistance. The house has a very unusual form which could be interpreted in a lot of different ways. 【推荐2】Waterbuurt is a residential(住宅的) development in Amsterdam, which consists of nearly 100 floating homes on Lake Eimer.

The floating homes are not ordinary houseboats but real floating houses. They only move with the changing tide(朝水). Designed by Dutch architect Marlies Rohmer, the houses have a basic design but are also comfortable. Although Waterbuurt is still a work in progress, there are some of the houses where there are already residents.

Two thirds of the Netherlands’ people live below sea-level, and with the flooding(发洪水) becoming a serious concern, there are many who believe that living on water in the European country is much safer than living on land. The prices of land homes in large city centers like Amsterdam has risen in recent years. But water is not that expensive.

“Moreover, houses in the cities have to stay there for 50 or 70 years,” Dutch architect Koen Olthuis said. “And as cities change, the only choice is to demolish these houses and build new ones. But floating buildings can be moved and adapted.”

The floating homes are built atop underwater platforms, and consists of a light steel frame(钢架) and wooden walls and paneling(嵌板). The bedrooms and bathroom are located on the lower floor, which is partially flooded. The kitchen and dining room are located on the raised ground floor, while the main living area and the outdoor terrace are on the top level.

All floating homes are designed with a lot of extras that buyers can choose, like floating terraces, a second entry, or a boardwalk around the house.

Waterbuurt is set to become the largest water settlement in the history of the Netherlands. Apart from floating houses, it will include floating parks and even floating high buildings. It is sure to meet even the most difficult buyers and win more acceptance from local people.

A.They are easy to take down.B.They are free from flooding.

【推荐3】Most people probably wondered who would voluntarily choose to live in a cooperative house with 14 other people. Well I would, and for me, it’s one of the best decisions I've made for myself.

The house has three floors and 15 bedrooms. It has communal spaces such as the kitchen, bathrooms, living room, and a big old dining room table, where we talk, laugh, disagree, play games, learn from each other, and most importantly break bread together.

My housemates and I share the housework and do the cook cycle, which generally means cooking dinner for the house about once every two weeks and we attend weekly house meetings where we make decisions about the operations of the house together.

What I worried most about at first was how my son might feel about the new housing situation. To my surprise, he loved it by the first visit to the house! He has never complained about this house being smaller than his dad’s. One of my housemates has two children his age, so he now has two new friends. This is important for me as a parent because I want to teach him that happiness doesn’t come from the size of your home, but from the love that is inside.

When I lived with a roommate in college, we never discussed about any agreements on quiet hours, cleaning up the communal areas and so on. Every cause of conflict during that time was due to lack of communication. On the contrary, in our house we talk about and have policies on almost everything.

Besides less cost on housing, I'm more concerned about the connection with other people that I was longing for. Cooperative living isn’t for everyone, but with increasing costs of living and decreasing connection with other people, it can definitely be a great option for more people.

1. What might the underlined “break bread” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Having dinner.B.Cooking dinner.C.Earning bread.D.Baking bread.
2. How does the son feel about living in this house?
A.It’s fun with new friends.B.It’s small and crowded.
C.It’s annoying in discussions.D.It’s tiring to do cleaning.
3. Why does the author mention her college life?
A.To convey the gratitude to her roommates.
B.To express the regret at those wasted days.
C.To show the importance of good relationships.
D.To stress the necessity of communication and rules.
4. What matters most for the author's choice of cooperative living?
A.Cutting down on living cost.B.Learning to be independent.
C.Getting connected with people.D.Offering a home for her son.
