I live in a small but lovely neighborhood. Our house is neither large nor luxurious, but it has a fairly big garden. My father loves his garden. He planted some seeds in it and took good care of the plants, watering them, applying fertilizer, weeding and getting rid of bugs. He was never tired of doing all that stuff. But at that time, I didn’t understand why working in the dirt excited him so much.
Unfortunately, in the summer vacation before senior high school, my father was seriously injured in an accident. He had to stay in bed for a while. My mother had several business trips, so she couldn’t take care of the garden. I didn’t want my father to worry. I said that I would take care of his garden until he recovered. I assumed that the little plants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and luckily it rained fairly often, so I didn’t think much about the garden.
One Saturday morning, my father said to me, “Christine, the vegetables should be about ready to be picked. Let’s have a salad today!” I went out to the garden and was upset to see that many of the lettuce (生菜) leaves and carrots had been half eaten by bugs. There were hundreds of bugs all over them!
I panicked for a moment but then I quietly went to the nearest supermarket to buy some vegetables. When I was making the salad, my mother came home and saw the bag from the supermarket in the kitchen. I was embarrassed and admitted, “Dad would like a salad, but the garden is a disaster. I don’t want to disappoint him, so I went to the store and bought some vegetables.” My mother smiled, saying, “Honey, you know what is the right thing to do.”
Paragraph 1My father seemed very pleased when I took the salad to him.

However, there are ways to solve the problems. Life is too short to waste. How a person approaches the family members and what he says can make a big difference.
If the family members are arguing, waiting until everyone calms down can help deal with the argument. A person shouldn’t discuss the family problem when he is still feeling upset or emotional. If he waits even a single night, the intensity (强度) of the emotion is likely to calm down somewhat, even if he is still unhappy. So it is advised that he should wait rather than react emotionally. If he takes a step back and gives himself some time to think before dealing with the problem, he will deal with it wisely.
There are lots of people who want to send off a text or an email and wish they could take things back. Actually, the tone (语气) can be easily misunderstood by electronic communication. The man who sends off a text message or email might not think he sounds angry to the person receiving it. Instead of sending off a text, pick up the telephone, or better yet, arrange in-person communication. Electronic communication means people lose the true meaning of body language, which can convey feelings and reduce the sting (刺痛) of a painful conversation.
As the saying goes, “Blood is thicker than water.” People can choose their friends, but not their family. You might be able to cut family members out, but it could cause you more pain down the road. Understanding that family members have faults, but they can still love their families, is the first step towards dealing with problems. Accept your own faults, too.

Long, long ago there lived at the foot of the mountain a poor farmer and his aged mother. Their life was poor but peaceful, and happy.
Unfortunately, their cruel governor gave a strict order to immediately put to death all aged people. Those were cruel days, and the custom of abandoning old people to die was not uncommon. The poor farmer loved his aged mother, and the order filled his heart with sorrow. But no one ever thought twice about obeying the order of the cruel governor, so with many deep and hopeless sighs, the youth prepared for what at that time was considered the kindest way of death.
Just at sundown, he took a quantity of unwhitened rice, and he cooked, dried it, and tied it in a square cloth around his neck along with a bottle filled with cool, sweet water. Then he lifted his helpless old mother to his back and started on his painful journey up the mountain. On he went, climbing blindly upward—ever upward towards the top of what is known as Obatsuyama, the mountain of the “abandoning of the aged”.
The mother’s loving heart grew anxious. Her son did not know the mountain’s many paths and his return might be one of danger, so she stretched forth her hand, snapping the twigs (折断树枝) as they passed. She quietly dropped a handful every few steps of the way so that as they climbed, the narrow path behind them was dotted with tiny piles of twigs. At last the top was reached. Gathering fallen leaves, he made a soft cushion (坐垫) and tenderly lifted his old mother onto it. He wrapped her coat more closely and with tearful eyes and an aching heart he said goodbye.

For thousands of years, Chinese people have valued the large family with three, four, or even five generations living under the same roof. That's what we call an extended family. Now it is changing. Compared to extended families. nuclear families which involve only two generations living together are becoming the trend. Apart from family size, these families are also featured by reduced dependence on the last generation. Young people are able to make decisions on their own and children are less likely to be brought up by their grandparents.
The reason for the tendency of nuclear families can be reflected as follows. It's a time when young people think highly of individual freedom. Young people like to have personal space that won't be disturbed by the old generations. In this way, they are more likely to avoid conflicts caused by different living habits from their parents.
It's also a time when social welfare institutions are highly advanced for old people to lead a comfortable life . Senior citizens can live together in some nursing homes and be taken good care of by specialized nursing workers, which may base young people's heavy burden of attending their aging parents.
However, the problem concerning attending to children turns up as the number of nuclear families increases. Young people are busy with their work and spend less time with their children. As a result, lacking enough care both from their parents and grandparents during their growth, children may develop mental illnesses like loneliness and depression. Many young people, therefore, hire babysitters to look after and keep company with their children, which adds a financial burden to them.
Facing the problem above, young people can seek help from old generations, communities and government. Old generations are welcomed to take care of their grandchildren, especially when young people are asked to work overtime. Communities ought to organize some volunteers to look after unattended kids. And government can set up special loads for young people to relieve their financial problem. With the joint efforts, nuclear families are expected to fit in well with the development of the society.

How Should We Help the Aged Fit in with Society

Radio is for sounds: the sounds of different kinds of music, of announcers reading the news, of sports, and of conversation. These are all sounds we are used to hearing. But in the UK, a new kind of radio programme has been launched, known as “slow radio”. This kind of programme consists of different sounds from the ones we usually hear on radio shows.
On slow radio, listeners can hear the sound of singing birds, cows being brought in from the fields, and the sound of a slow walk through the German countryside.
Some people might find the idea of such sounds boring. These sounds, they might say, are meaningless and unimportant. But, unexpectedly, slow radio has taken off. Why?
If slow radio has an audience, perhaps it’s because it provides an alternative to our fast, event-filled lives. That is what Alan Davey, the head of the slow radio programme, thinks. Slow radio, according to its official description, is “an antidote(解毒剂)to today’s frenzied(狂乱的)world”. In such a world, we’re so busy that we fail to notice the things around us. Listening to slow radio can remind us of the sounds around us that we often filter out.
Slow radio doesn’t just broadcast the sounds of nature and the countryside; some of the sounds are more unusual. The programme makers are also interested in sounds that have already died out and which we hear only in our memory. Examples of such sounds are the noises made by old computers or old-fashioned video games, or the sound made by old telephones. These sounds can take a listener back to times of his life that are long gone.
So, this is the magic of radio and of these “meaningless” sounds. They permit the audience to move out of their lives for a while. A busy office worker in noisy London can be transported to the Irish countryside, and they can even “time-travel” with slow radio’s reminders of sounds from the past.
