Mika still remembers the exact moment she was separated from her mother on September 24, 1975. Then just four years old, she and her mother were walking through Penn Station in New York City. Mika saw a candy store and asked whether she could go in. She thought her mother said yes, so she entered. When she returned, her mother was gone.
A policeman found her wandering alone and took her to the police station. Before long, she was placed in an orphanage (孤儿院)where she was given a name—Missy—because she wouldn’t talk. Two years later, she was adopted(收养). Once she finished high school, she moved out, changed her name to Mika. All the while she tried to find her birth family. In 2001, eager for any information, she posted on a website that she had been left at Penn Station and was searching for her birth mother.
Carty, founder of reunitepeople.com, saw the message and decided to help her. She said, “Don’t worry about sending me any money. I’m just going to help you.” Carty worked the case on and off for 16 years without a breakthrough. In December 2017, she sent Mika a DNA test as a Christmas present. After running the results through several databases (数据库), Carty found that Mika was a match with a woman named Kelly, who appeared to be Mika’s first cousin. Carty called Kelly, who at first doubted about the story but finally agreed to help.
When Mika met her long-lost family, her uncle, Joseph, said to her, “I hope you forgive us.” Mika nodded, smiling through her tears.

This was the girl I took to Kleinfeld, the fancy store featured on the television program Say Yes to the Dress. As the trip approached, I asked Marina if she was excited. Sure, Mom. shed say, shrugging. Marina was more excited about getting a tattoo(文身) on her ankle to represent my fight with ALS(肌萎缩性脊髓侧索硬化症) than trying on $ 10,000 wedding gowns.
My sister, Stephanie, had arranged for a car with a wheelchair lift to drive us from the hotel to Kleinfeld. The car driver wheeled me in.
At Kleinfeld with flower arrangements ten feet high, I felt like rolling into a dream. “Wow!” I said. I was wearing a new black outfit. Marina wore jean shorts, a sleeveless(无袖的) shirt, and sneakers.
Marina didn’t say a word. We turned a corner into the storage room, where hundreds of dresses hung in plastic protector sleeves. Marina and I were overwhelmed.
“Want to try one on ?” I said, touching Marina’s hand.
“OK,” Marina said in her sharp, unsure voice.
“Tell them the style you’d like.”
Marina stood silent. I felt bad for bringing her, for forcing such an adult experience on a child.
Marina picked an A-line dress. Or, more precisely, the ladies of Kleinfeld picked it for her. Marina was too shocked to do more than nod. As she took the gown into the dressing room, I tried not to think of my little girl on her wedding day or of her as a baby in my arms. I tried not to think of her with her own baby in her arms one day.
I tried not to think of Marina right now, embarrassed by her mother’s plans, by things she could not and should not yet understand.
I am leaving money in my will for Marina’s wedding dress. Stephanie has promised to bring her back to Kleinfeld to purchase it.
“No pure white!” I said to Stephanie. “Ivory. Not too much tulle(薄纱). Think lace.”
“Think royalty when picking a dress,” I advised Steph as we waited outside the dressing room. “Think Princes Kate. Elegant. Think long sleeves. They make dresses more formal.”
Marina came out, sleeveless, flared(下摆宽大的). She looked like a 14-year-old girl in the middle of a giant cupcake.
“I don’t like the loose gown.” she said.
That’s my girl!
“How about trying on one with long sleeves?” I asked her.
The ladies brought out a dress with long lace sleeves, an Empire collar, a ruched(有褶饰的) fitted waist, and a long, smooth silk skirt.
Marina disappeared into the dressing room. When the door opened, she looked a foot taller and a decade older. I could clearly see the beautiful woman she will be one day. I simply stared.
What do you do when you glimpse a moment you will not live to see?
I dipped my head. Breathe, I told myself. I looked up. I smiled. Marina smiled back.
I worked my tongue into position to speak. “I like it,” I said.
In that dress, Marina stood straight, shining brightly, and tall.
“You are beautiful,” I whispered, my tongue barely cooperating. I don’t know if she heard me. We took some photos. And moved on. A memory made.

Kevin and I took Mom to a nice restaurant for Mother’s Day. On the way back to her place, Mom commented that the restaurant had their air conditioner turned up too high—she nearly froze to death.
I asked Kevin whether I was always complaining. He hesitated for a few seconds before speaking, but he stared out of the window. I realized that the family tradition of complaining had taken root in me as well. Kevin had never mentioned it. But it wasn’t his characteristic to shine a light on my faults. I decided to keep a better watch on my tongue. However, every time the phone rang and Mom’s voice was on the other end, I felt extremely nervous.
Mom seemed ungrateful. After whatever Kevin and I had done for her, all we heard was what she disliked. I talked about how Mom’s attitude annoyed me with my best friend Tory. With the words coming out from my lips, an uneasy feeling settled in my stomach.
A few days later, I received a package from Tory. A bright orange journal with one capital word in gold on its cover: GRATITUDE.
The next morning, I opened the journal and wrote the date, then the things I was grateful for. Over the next few months, I continued to list blessings(幸事、福祉) each day. Looking for things to thank for led to a deeper in me.
Life didn’t suddenly become trouble-free, but a new awareness of the blessings around me changed all these in my life including my Mom. I couldn’t change her, but I could only love her.

She'd sleep during the day and be ready when we returned home before heading out again in the evening. This went on for 23 years. She never complained (抱怨). No matter how tired she was, she always had enough energy to be my mom.
She often had to work on Christmas, Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve, and sometimes Thanksgiving, which made me upset. However, before holidays she always decorated the inside and outside of our house. She'd also have cookies baking in the oven, a holiday-themed movie in the VCR, and music playing throughout our house for us. But when it was time to go to work, there was no room for debate. “Why do you have to work on this day of all days?" I'd ask sadly. "They need me, too, dear son," she'd respond, compassion (同情) in her tone.
For a long time I didn't understand why she should care so much about those sick strangers. Recently, as my grandmother became ill, I found myself spending more time in hospitals. The scenes I saw in the hospital made me see the different side of my mother. The nurses checked heart, blood and oxygen levels, made sure patients were comfortable. They lifted patients in and out of bed and helped them to the bathroom. Beyond their duties, the nurses displayed consideration for each patient.
What I saw helped me to understand why my mother was devoted to her occupation. I was filled with more admiration for my mother.

It was a distance (距离) in age to keep us close as we got older, but also an age gap to make sure we lived our own lives in completely different ways. Having a younger brother while I was a girl was a lot of work, for there was a lot of fighting.
However, as we’ve got older, we’ve become closer, and I’ve learned several things in life from my younger brother that I didn’t realize I needed before.
My younger brother is one of the most talented and creative souls (灵魂) I’ve known. He’s continually feeding his creativity with new art forms and new instruments. He always seeks to understand and learn more about the world around him. He’s helped remind me through his actions and words that giving up on creativity is something a person should never do.
My younger brother has also been through hard times, but he’s able to focus on learning from the hard times, unlike me, who tends to hold on to every little thing from my life. It’s always been difficult for me to let things go and move on, but my younger brother has been an inspiration (灵感来源) for me to try harder at letting go.
My younger brother has always been a more introverted type, and if you speak to him, you’re lucky to get over three words out of him at a time. Because of this, he’s certainly learned the whole “actions speak louder than words” thing. But, I’ve realized from my brother that I needn’t speak to fill the silence. Sometimes, it’s necessary to spend some of your time in silence and reflect in it.

In many cities around the world, elderly people actually cannot cross the road because the timing on crossing signals is too short. At least we don’t have that problem here for the absence of functional traffic lights. On many mornings, I would watch many people—including or especially the elderly—crossing the road so that they could walk along the lake. The road was fairly empty, which meant that drivers sped along so fast that they could easily have killed someone on foot. But somehow, the right of drivers to speed is considered more important than the right of the elderly to move about safely. “Learn to deal with the risk or stay off the streets” seems to be the truth.
“Why did the chicken cross the road?”
“Because it was still young enough to do so safely!” The more I think about cities, the more I see how they have become places for the young and able-bodied. Small children, the elderly, and people with disabilities is unwelcome.
Nor is it just about the scary roads. Many of our trips are within the neighborhood; elderly people specially need social contact and will die early if they are socially lonely. We need to ensure that there are attractive outdoor public spaces in each neighborhood where the elderly can gather, and that they can reach these places safely on foot. There is also the possibility for the elderly to ride bicycles. Buses, too, need to be dealt with. How easy on earth is it for an elderly to get on and off a bus here?
We can’t allow our cities to become fast-paced and terrifying places, where people not only fear injury and death, but often find their fears becoming a reality. We could do much better for our elderly-and then benefit everyone else in the process.

People need to move from one place to another; they have to refuel and relax. To meet these requirements, the parks are well-equipped in reality. For example, Disneyland Park in California has a reliable transport system. In Walt Disney World in Florida, dustbins are spaced 30 feet apart, and all of them are emptied through underground tubes(地下管道).
None of this happened by accident. Walt Disney first had his idea for a play land in 1937. He first imagined the park’s buildings in a small size. He spent years collecting ideas by visiting other places. He studied Beverly Park in Los Angeles, including rebuilt historic villages. He visited Colonial Williamsburg, where employees dressed up and walked around… Then he organized a team of engineers and designers to plan and build a small world he called Disneyland. Walt Disney had blueprints(蓝图) drawn up, and tried to get the permission to break ground(破土动工).
In 1952, he showed his plan to the Burbank City government, for a 16-acre site between Griffith Park and his studio in Burbank. They didn't go for it. ''We don't want the carnival(嘉年华会) atmosphere, '' an official said. ''We don't want the loud music and screaming.''
The failure got Disney thinking even bigger. In 1953, he closed a deal to buy some land in Anaheim. Some designers thought it was too far, but Disney went ahead. It was like building a new city. Pipes had to be fixed. Railway track had to be laid around. Disney chose the hub-and-spoke(轴辐式) street pattern that many cities have. ''I want Disneyland to be a place where you can't get lost, '' he said. Designers and architects also diagrammed(图解) the rides and made models, while artists painted the background.
Finally in July 1955, the visitors came. If they picked up maps, they could see the results of years' planning: the shops and restaurants, the square, and the streets. The magic city had finally jumped off the drawing board and come into real life.

Her family is famous for producing three famous women scientists, including her two sisters. She graduated from Tsinghua University in 1936 with a degree in physics, and then went on to study at the Technical University of Berlin, where she was the top in her class, outperforming her future husband Qian Sanqiang — China's "father of the atomic bomb”. In 1940, she earned a Ph. D. in Engineering.
The couple made great discoveries in the field of uranium fission (铀核裂变),which drew global attention and earned them worldwide reputations, also marking a milestone in the development of China's experimental fission physics. Many Western media called the couple the “Marie Curie and Pierre Curie of China”・
As one of the pioneers in nuclear science and technology in China, Professor He contributed a great deal to nuclear physics. During the 1950s, she started the research and development of nuclear emulsions(核乳胶)in China and their research reached the advanced world level at that time. He and her research group took the lead in building China's first nuclear reactor and accelerator. She was awarded the first Award of the National Prize of Natural Sciences for making outstanding achievements in supporting the national program of nuclear weapon development.
Throughout her career, He conquered many obstacles, and was always on the front lines of China's science-related work. She published dozens of papers yet placed little value on personal fame. The world's top physicists recognized He as a famous scientist, “ Chinese Madame Curie”.
He passed away in Beijing in 2011 at the age of 97, nearly 20 years after Qian Sanqiang. She dedicated herself to science, living a simple life, always nurturing young researchers and maintaining the highest standards that she had always valued. Carabao is a buffalo(水牛) found in the Philippines, and the Carabao Festival is a day of dancing and revelry(狂欢)in May that celebrates the strong animal that plays such an important role in Filipinos farming economy. The animals are cleaned before a parade in which 20 or more of them—many decorated with paint and colorful ribbons—walked through the streets.
Cooper’s Hill is a steep, grassy knoll(圆丘 ) near Gloucester, England, which is longer than a football field. The warning came in a report from the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, an international expert group that advises governments. The group has more than 130 member states.
The experts called for major efforts aimed at preventing pandemics rather than trying to contain them after they happen. The report urges major worldwide efforts to stop habitat destruction that can lead viruses to jump from wild animals to humans.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has estimated that three out of every four new or emerging infectious diseases in people come from animals. Scientists have said COVID-19 probably started in bats and began spreading among humans.
In their report, the experts predict that about half of an estimated 1.7 million undiscovered viruses in nature might be able to infect people. Activities such as poaching(偷猎) or clearing forests to grow soy or palm oil can bring humans and disease closer together.
Peter Daszak was the report’s lead writer. He is president of EcoHealth Alliance, an international health, environment and development organization. He said in a statement that even though the experts call for urgent action, “this report is not a misfortune suggesting the world’s going to end and it’s too late.” Instead, Daszak said it should be seen as “an optimistic call for action.”
He noted that the current method for dealing with pandemics is to wait for them to emerge and then try to identify them before they spread. COVID-19 has demonstrated the problems with that plan. Officials attempted to contain COVID-19 after the disease was discovered last year, but it was already too late. “And here we are waiting for a vaccine(疫苗) and drugs to work,” Daszak said. “It’s not a good strategy. We need to do more.”

Then the landlord began examining the house. After looking around, the landlord screamed, “The walls are full of nails! How could I rent the house to others?”
He said, “The room is too small, so we could only hang things on the walls.” The landlord didn’t listen to him and turned around up to the floor. She began looking around her familiar room. Four years ago, she became his bride here. There were several nails on the wall, on which hung his clothes yesterday. After he lived in the room, he removed all the clothes boxes and bought her a desk in the spared room because he knew she loved writing and drawing.
The landlord took toolkit down and tried to pull the nails out. After the nails were removed, the walls were left with numerous holes. All of a sudden, she felt terribly heartbroken as if her heart was pierced(刺破)through those holes and bleeding nonstop. She sprang from the seat and shouted, “Stop pulling the nails! After all, more than 60 percent of the world’s population is expected to live in cities by 2050 , according to a UN report. The answer to making these cities more livable for so many people lies in creating “smart” cities. These cities will use 5G networks and the “Internet of things”(IoT) to make everyday life safer and more convenient. Some cities are already using smart technology to improve the lives of residents.
But what exactly does a smart city do? In the United States cities of Boston and Baltimore, smart trash cans can sense how full they are and inform cleaning workers when they need to be emptied. In Amsterdam, the Netherlands, traffic flow and energy usage are monitored and adjusted according to real-time data gathered from sensors(传感器)around the city. And in Copenhagen, Denmark,a smart bike system allows riders to check on air quality and traffic condition as they ride.
Smart cities will be interactive ,allowing their residents to feel like they’ re truly shaping their environment, instead of merely existing in it.“One of the most important reasons to have a smart city is that we can actually communicate with our environment in a way that we never have in the past,”said Mrinalini Ingram, head of a telecom company.
Smart cities will also allow us to save resources. By using sensors and 5G networks to monitor the use of water, gas and electricity, city managers can figure out how to distribute and save these resources more efficiently. Emissions of carbon dioxide and other air pollutants can be more closely monitored in smart cities as well.
Of course,it will take time and money to turn our current cities into the smart cities of the future. But as we’ve already seen, more cities around the world are already adopting smart technology in smart ways. China, for instance,is making investments in big cities like Shanghai and Guangzhou to make them “smarter”. It won’t be long before even more cities start to develop their own smart infrastructure( 基础设施).
