Whether you like it or not, as students, you have to live with roommates after going to school or university. Having a roommate can be one of the best experiences, or easily one of the worst.    1

Here are five tips for you to follow to avoid the common mistakes that make good roommate relationships worse.

Talking things out.     2     If something happens, sit down with your roommates and have a face- to-face conversation. Complaining about your roommates behind their hacks creates nothing but bad situation and general unhappiness.

3     Some roommates become the best of their friends, and some don't. Don't put pressure on yourself or your roommate to reach this level, especially when you first meet. Remember, you are trying to make a new friend, not frighten your roommate away. And if your roommate doesn't end up being your best friend, there is no need to worry about it.

Clean up after yourself. Or at least, keep your things on your side.     4     But being considerate with where you put your own things will help you avoid the arguments.

Ask before you take. This applies to food, clothes and anything else that you don't own.     5    Even if you both agree to share everything you should still ask.

A.Don't expect to be the best friends.
B.Communication is of great importance.
C.Rooms can be really easy for a mess to pile up.
D.Try to make your roommates your best friends.
E.You don't need to keep the room clean and organized all the time.
F.You'd better show your roommate that you have respect for his or her things.
G.If you want to have a good relationship with your roommate, it all starts with you.

【推荐1】As a student, you have a lot of freedom when it comes to how you spend your time. But with that freedom comes the responsibility to make the most of your studying hours. Here are some tips to help you do just that.

Create a schedule

This means setting aside specific times for studying each day and then sticking to that schedule as closely as possible. Of course, there will be days when things come up, and you have to deviate (偏离) from your plan.     1

Break up your study sessions into smaller periods

Our brain can’t focus effectively for a long time. If you try to study for several hours once, chances are much higher that you won’t remember all of the information you’re trying to learn.     2

Find a study place that works for you

3     Some people prefer to study in complete silence, while others find that some background noise helps them focus better. There is no right or wrong answer here -it’s all about finding a place to study that allows you to work as efficiently as possible.

    4

This will not only help you check your understanding of the concepts but also identify any area that may need more review. And once you know what specific topics or ideas you need to work on, it will be much easier for you to direct your study sessions accordingly and make better use of your time overall.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help

If you find that you’ re struggling to understand the material or just not making progress as quickly as you’d like, seek assistance in time.    5     In fact, it can save lots of time in the long run by getting you the support you need.

A.Instead, divide your study sessions up into shorter periods to help you relax and recharge.
B.Where you study can also affect how effectively you use your time.
C.However, try not to go off track too often or for too long.
D.Make sure that every minute you spend studying counts.
E.There is no shame in admitting that you need assistance.
F.Learn to accept failure
G.Take relevant tests

【推荐2】How to Make Your Email Really Secure

Email is the most used communications medium for business and for many of us at home too, but few people outside IT know how to truly secure their email. Here's a quick look at some of the ways you can carry on encrypted(加密的) conversations.    1

Your Gmail messages being sent are encrypted. However, unless the receiver is reading email using a Google browser(浏览器) or Gmail app, they don't stay encrypted. And, of course, Google itself freely admits that its software reads all of your email for advertising purposes. Some programs, like the paid version of Outlook, offer an encryption feature.     2     It requires that you and your receiver exchange something called a digital signature.

3     The disadvantage—and you knew there would be one—is that your receiver must also subscribe to that service, or enter a password to open each message you send. They're fine if your only secure conversations are with one or two people.     4

Another option for those wishing to send secure text correspondence: Don't use email at all.     5     These apps encrypt your messages on both ends and throughout their sending. Here again, though, they limit your communication to people who also have and use those same apps.

A.Protect the machine you use email on.
B.Free accounts limit the size of your messages and attachments.
C.But setting it up takes much trouble, and surely not for the masses.
D.Instead, use a chat program like CryptoCat, ChatSecure, or PQChat.
E.But you're never going to persuade the whole world to sign up to get your emails.
F.Email providers like Tutanota, and Protonmail automatically encrypt all the mail you send.
G.The concern that your words could be stolen and used against you someday will be solved.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍的是Betty Schrampfer Azar对英语语法教学的看法。

【推荐3】Betty Schrampfer Azar is a world-famous expert on teaching English grammar. Here are some of her opinions.

Why do students need to learn grammar? When teachers are deciding which grammar points to teach, they should first ask two questions. First, will understanding the point help students be understood and will it help them understand better? Next, will learning the grammar point help students be acceptable as English speakers?

People usually think that grammar is all about memorizing rules. In fact, grammar is not just learning rules. It is a way to help students along the way to communication. Teachers should know that students do not all learn in the same way. Each may have a different learning style when it comes to learning grammar. Some may see a pattern and understand the rule. Others need explanations and more practice. “But to teach grammar as subject matter and test it is sure to bore everybody and not to reach the goals that you are trying to reach—successful communication experiences,” she says.

Why do some teachers hate teaching grammar? Many teachers are not comfortable teaching grammar because they do not know how to answer their students’ questions. “Most native speakers of English don’t learn it in school,” she says. “If you don’t know any grammar of your own language and then you are asked to teach it, it’s possible that your students may know more grammar than you and you can’t answer their questions.”

Can teaching grammar really be fun? Teachers should learn to make the teaching of grammar fun. She says, “My students enjoy learning grammar as much as I enjoy teaching it. I think grammar is fascinating. It holds language together. It is really beautiful when you get to know it. Grammar is quite a remarkable (非凡的) thing.”

1. What should teachers do before teaching grammar points?
A.Know the specific goal of teaching grammar.

D.Let students memorize some rules.
2. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

B.Native speakers don’t need to learn grammar.
C.Different students learn grammar in different ways.
D.It’s useful to memorize rules when students learn grammar.
4. What does Betty Schrampfer Azar think of grammar?
