The hotel on the moon may be just a few decades away, as the European Space Agency (ESA) is advising building a lunar vacation spot. This "Lunar Village" would be the first structure of its kind, a unique achievement for Europe, and the human race in general.
The Lunar Village would likely be built near the poles of the moon where water ice is trapped at the bottom of dark holes. Such places would not only provide water for the tourists, but would also allow for constant daylight, unlike other locations on the lunar surface. Visitors would wear normal clothing while inside the hotel, putting on spacesuits when out on the lunar surface.
The plan suggests that this hotel could house scientists and prospectors (勘探者) along with the next generation of space tourists. Construction of the facility would largely be financed by Russia, together with contributions from China, Japan and India.
ESA managers are warning the public of space travel dangers, including extreme temperatures and radiation from the sun.
By 2030, it may be possible to construct a base on the moon, providing a supply station for space travelers on their journeys to Mars or other locations in the solar system, space engineers predicted
"The ESA space exploration strategy sets the moon as a priority destination for humans on the way to Mars, and the recent talk of a "Moon Village" certainly has spread a lot of positive energy in Europe." said Kathy Laurini of NASA's Exploration Roadmap Working Group.
Although such a base is possible, there are no dates set yet for the public opening. Tourists wishing to visiting the moon can afford to wait to pack their bags-rockets taking passengers to the lunar surface are not leaving anytime soon.

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama held the event by inviting thousands of kids to color and look for eggs. The theme of the day was “Hop Into Healthy, Swing Into Shape.” It was part of the First Lady’s “Let’s Move!” program to reduce obesity rates (肥胖率) among American kids. Mrs. Obama spoke to young reporters about her goal to get children to eat right and keep moving.
“We are working to make sure that kids born today grow up healthy, learn how to have balanced meals, and get more physical activity into their lives,” she said.
Mrs. Obama said she wants children across the nation to understand that “exercise isn’t just hard work, it’s play. If you’re running around with your dog, you’re getting exercise. If you walk up the stairs, that’s exercise. But if you’re sitting in front of the TV or on a computer game, you’re not exercising.”
The First Lady said that for kids who have balanced meals most of the time, having a special snack, like chocolate, will not hurt. “And if you are active, you can splurge (挥霍) a little more,” she said. Mrs. Obama’s favorite “splurge food” is French fries. But she balances her splurging by exercising almost every day. She loves to play tennis and she practices yoga.
“A lot of kids look up to athletes, and I think it’s important for athletes to share their good habits,” Mrs. Obama said. “Kids aren’t just going to wake up and be LeBron James. He’s practicing and eating right and working out and training. Our athletes can be really good messengers to kids who look up to them — they can say to kids, ‘If you really want to be like me, then you really do need to eat your vegetables.’”

Are you making a resolution in the New Year? You’ll give yourself your best shot at success if your goals are SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound).
•Specific. Your resolution should be absolutely clear. Making a concrete goal is really important rather than just vaguely(含糊地) saying “I want to lose weight.” You want to have a goal: How much weight do you want to lose and at what time interval?
•Measurable. This may seem obvious if your goal is a fitness related one, but it’s also important if you’re trying to cut back on something, too. If, for example, you want to stop biting your nails, take pictures of your nails over time so you can track your progress in how those nails grow back out.
•Achievable. This doesn’t mean that you can’t have big stretch goals.
•Relevant.
•Time-bound. Like “achievable”, the timeline toward reaching your goal should be realistic, too. That means giving yourself enough time to do it with lots of smaller goals set up along the way.
If you’re building a habit, you’re planning for the next decade, not the next couple of months.
A.Five pounds in the next two months—that’s going to be more effective. |
B.Is this a goal that really matters to you, and are you making it for the right reasons? |
C.Logging progress into a journal or making notes in an app can strengthen the progress. |
D.Do you have a realistic plan for achieving your resolution? |
E.Focus on these small wins so you can make gradual progress. |
F.But trying to take too big a step too fast can leave you disappointed. |
G.It’s a resolution based on someone else’s intention. |

Will Experimentation on Animals End?
One of the most debatable issues in science is the use of animals in research. Scientists experiment on animals for different reasons, including basic research to explore how organisms function, investigating potential treatments for human disease, and safety and quality control testing of drugs, devices and other products.
In 1959, William Russell and Rex Burch proposed their “3Rs” guidelines for making the use of animals in scientific research more humane: restrict the use of animals; refine experiments to minimize distress; and replace tests with alternative techniques.
For example, researchers previously had to do experiments with multiple mice at different stages of cancer development, but now they can watch the disease develop in a single living animal using a dye. Similarly, as brain-imaging techniques become more advanced, some questions that were addressed with experiments in monkeys before may be better answered by looking into the human brain now. “
A.Over the course of five decades their guidelines have become widely accepted worldwide. |
B.The awareness of animal protection contributes to the decline of the number. |
C.Human volunteers must be able to replace monkeys more and more in the next 10 to 20 years. |
D.New experimental techniques help to push numbers down. |
E.Its supporters point to the long list of medical advances made possible with the help of animal research. |
F.The number of the animals used in research is still considerable. |

Later that month, the Guardian reported that “40 percent of the world’s plant species are at risk of extinction”. Stanford biologist Paul Ehrlich and his colleagues argued that “the ongoing sixth mass extinction may be the most serious environmental threat to the persistence of civilization”. Around the same time, the Daily Mail warned that “human civilization stands a 90 percent chance of collapse within decades due to deforestation”.
These horrible calculations and projections come from authoritative-sounding reports issued by international agencies, conservation groups, and peer-reviewed scientific journals. But is the future of wild nature and human civilization really so poor?
Data from uncontroversial mainstream sources strongly indicate that both humanity and the natural world are likely to be flourishing rather than collapsing at the end of this century. Humanity is becoming an urban species, and that’s good for the environment, since urban dwellers generally use less electricity, produce less globe-warming carbon dioxide, and have smaller land footprints than people living in the countryside. By 2100, it is estimated that 85 percent of people will be city dwellers, which would leave only 1.2 billion still living in the countryside. That means more space for the wildlife and less pollution from the agriculture.
The global tree-covering area increased by 865,000 square miles between 1982 and 2016. The researchers found that gains in forest area in the mild, subtropical and northern climatic zones are offsetting declines in the tropics. The Maryland researchers owe much of that increase to “natural afforestation on abandoned agricultural land”. “Furthermore, forests in mountainous regions are expanding as climate warming enables trees to grow at higher altitudes,” they added.
Humanity does face big environmental challenges in the coming century. But the scientific and economic evidence shows that most of the trends are positive or can be turned in positive direction by human wisdom. Rather than an age of extinction, the 21st century promises to be an era of environmental renewal.

A.No one will choose to live in the countryside. |
B.More space will be available for the wildlife. |
C.Neither humanity nor the natural world will develop quickly. |

The findings could assist with the restoration and sort of newly discovered or uncertain inscriptions (碑文) with improved speed and accuracy, advancing our understanding of ancient history.
To understand the history of ancient civilizations, historians study the inscriptions created by past individuals, written directly on materials- such as stone, pottery or metal- that have survived until today. However, many inscriptions have been damaged over the centuries. Their texts are now vague and their date of writing is uncertain. Specialists in the study of inscriptions can reconstruct missing texts, but their traditional methods are highly complex and time-consuming.
To overcome the restrictions of current epigraphic methods, Yannis Assael, Thea Sommerschield and their colleagues tested a deep neural network (named Ithaca), a type of artificial intelligence (AI) that was trained to restore, date and place ancient Greek inscriptions. The authors found that Ithaca could achieve 62% accuracy when used alone to restore damaged texts, and 72% accuracy when it is used by a historian. Additionally, Ithaca could also help to determine inscriptions’ place and date of writing; in their experiments, it attributed inscriptions to their original locations with 71% accuracy and dated them to less than 30 years from the date ranges proposed by historians.
The findings could unlock the cooperative potential between artificial intelligence and historians, and improve our understanding of human history.
Common fields such as education, healthcare, catering, and industry have long been dominated by artificial intelligence, and this technology is now finding its way into relatively niche (小众) fields to more fully exploit its talents. Archaeology (考古学) is one of its latest fields.

Though the androids (机器人) have proved useful at performing ordinary tasks, they are not ready for the greatest time. At least that appears to be the case at Japan’s Henn-na Hotel chain where over half of the robot staff are being replaced by humans.
The first location of the unique hotel opened in July 2015 was at Nagasaki’s Huis Ten Bosch Theme Park. The hotel’s owner, Hideo Sawada, promised the hotel to be managed primarily by robots. Guests were greeted and checked-in by a dinosaur robot, while a cute android called Churi, placed inside each room, provided information about attractions. Not surprisingly, the lodging, recognized in 2016 as the world’s first robot-staffed hotel by Guinness World Records, drew in curious visitors from all around the world.
But as the years have passed, the hotel’s main draw is becoming less novel and more unsatisfactory. Also as the robots are “aging”, they are costing more to repair. Among the 283 androids being replaced are the chain’s two dinosaur receptionists. In addition to scaring young guests, they are also unable to photocopy guests“passports, forcing human employees to step in each time. Also out are the cute Churirobots, which annoyed guests by interrupting their conversations. For example, one guest told The Wall Street Journal that Churi mistook his snoring (打鼾) for a command and kept asking him to repeat his request all night.
Sawada told The Wall Street Journal, “When you actually use robots you realize there are places where they aren’t needed — or just annoy people.” While Sawada may be cutting back on his use of androids, the recently-opened Smart LYZ Hotel and the Fly Zoo Hotel in China, are run entirely by robots, with not a human in sight. Whether the employees have more competence than those “hired” by the Henn-na Hotel chain remains to be seen.

Today, it’s a completely different picture. The world’s most populous nation has — by some distance — the world’s largest network of high-speed railways. Half of that total has been completed in the last five years alone. By 2020, 75% of Chinese cities with a population of 500,000 or more had a high-speed rail ink. With maximum speeds of 350 kph (217 mph) on many lines, intercity travel has been transformed.
In contrast, the UK currently has just 107 kilometers while the United States has only one rail route that (just about) qualifies for high-speed status with top speed at 240 kph.
The size of China and its tremendous variations in terrain (地形), geology and climate have presented the country’s railway engineers with incredible challenges. From sometimes frozen Harbin in the far north to the near-tropical humidity of the Pearl River Delta megalopolis (特大都市), to the 1,776-km Lanzhou-Urumqi line crossing the Gobi Desert, China’s engineers have quickly developed extensive expertise in driving railways over, under and through whatever terrain lies in their path using overpasses, tunnels and bridges.
Chinese companies are among the first in the world to introduce new technology. The driverless “bullet trains” connecting Beijing and Zhangjiakou in northern Hebei province are capable of hitting speeds up to 350 kph, making them the world’s fastest autonomous trains. These trains are equipped with seats with 5G touchscreen control panels, intelligent lighting, thousands of safety sensors and removable seats for passengers in wheelchairs. Facial-recognition technology and robots are used in stations to assist travelers with navigation, luggage and check-in.
These new railways are a symbol of the country’s economic power, rapid modernization, growing technological prowess (高超造诣) and increasing prosperity. Moreover, they are also a powerful tool for social cohesion, political influence and the integration of disparate regions with distinct cultures into the mainstream.

The project takes place on the Caribbean coast in a wildlife reserve in Gandoca。It is a very remote place, close to the border with Panama. Basically, the work was to keep watching every night to find the turtles coming out. Once we found a turtle, we had to collect the eggs to bring them to one of our two hatcheries (孵化所).We also had to measure the turtle, keep a sign on their body and check if they have any injuries.
Another part of the work was the hatchery duty. The people in the hatchery had the responsibility for preventing any animals or people getting in it. When the first babies began to hatch, they had to take care of the babies.
I must say that sometimes it was hard. Not the work itself, but the mosquitoes, and the fact that we could never have a complete night of sleep or that we had to keep watching even if it was raining. And it rains a lot on the Caribbean coast. But that’s not so important. Working on this project was a wonderful experience. First of all, we had the unique opportunity to meet the leatherback turtle, which is an endangered species. It's a really impressive animal. The female inspires a sort of respect, because she is so heavy and the effort she has to do to go out of the water to lay her eggs is incredible. I fell in love with them really.
Then, working in the reserve was also a chance to practice my Spanish, not only with the Spanish-speaking people among the other research assistants, but also with people of the community. The contact with all the volunteers was great too. We were all there to share the same experience. Everyone was a part of it and we shared strong emotions and feelings together. I will never forget it and know that I will get in touch with some of them for a long time.
Last but not least, Gandoca is a paradise on earth一the beautiful beach, deep rainforest, lots of animals, peaceful atmosphere and so on. I hope that many other people will have the opportunity to live this experience and all I want to add is to go there!

Until now the local government have only been prepared to provide bus services for children living more than three miles from their school,or sometimes less if special reasons existed. Now it has been decided that if a group of parents ask for help in organizing transport they will be prepared to go ahead,as long as the arrangement will not lose money and children taking part will attend their nearest school.
The new plan is to be fired out this term for children living at Milton who attend Impington School. The children live just within the three-mile limit and the local government said in the past that they would not undertake to provide free transport to the school. But now they have agreed to offer a sum of money for a bus service from Milton to Impington and back,a plan which has the support of the school’s headmaster.Between 50 and 60 parents have said they would like their children to take part.Final calculations have still to be carried out,but a government official has said the cost to parents should be less than£20 a term. They have been able to arrange the service at a low cost because there is already an agreement with the bus company for a bus to take children who live further away to Impington. The same bus would now just make one more journey to pick up the Milton children. The official said they would get in touch with other groups of parents who in had asked if transport could be provided for their children,to see if they would like to take part in the new plan.
