This year marks the 251th anniversary of Beethoven's birth on Dec 17,1770 As one of the fathers of classical music, Beethoven was revolutionary, breaking the rules and stretching musical forms to unleash (释放) emotion.
Although some may claim that classical is a dying art only for the elites (精英人士),it is actually alive and well in the modern era. It's not uncommon for today's musicians to have grown up playing classical instruments such as the violin or piano. Even those who don't play or listen to classical music are likely to have been introduced to it through movies and even video games.
Many or the most recognizable names in the music industry have drawn inspiration from classical music. UK legendary rock band The Beatles is one of them. John Lemon, while lying on his couch listening to his wife play Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata on the piano, asked her to play it backward and was immediately inspired to write the songBecause. The song itself is similar to Moonlight Sonata with simple, straightforward lyrics.
This is just one example. Countless musicians have been influenced by Beethoven, and classical music as a whole. Record producer George Marin once said: “They always had enormous confidence that the world was theirs for the taking.” This quote seems to sum up not only the mentality of more modern era musicians, butthatof those classical artists who formed the building blocks of music today. They were making a bold, grandiose (浮夸的) and very innovative statement, not holding anything back.
Whether you're a music scholar or a passive listener, you can't deny that classical musicians' influence remains strong centuries after the artists have passed. Musicians like Beethoven continue illustrate their impact on the unifying force that is music.

This year it went to Annie Ray, a music teacher at a High School in Virginia, for her efforts to make music accessible to all students, particularly those with disabilities. However, in the award ceremony, she gave the credits to her students.
Inspired mostly by the diversity of the Annandale community including over 60 countries, Ray created an orchestra for students with severe intellectual and developmental disabilities. The orchestra is about much more than just making music. Ray says the program gives students a chance to develop their collaboration skills, make mistakes and learn the art of refining something. And they teach her a lot in return — more than she could ever teach them.
She says her students completely changed her educational philosophy and approach of what it truly means to meet a student where they’re at and apply that elsewhere. “I believe they have a truly powerful message to share with everyone, and especially with how we look at approaching music education and what that looks like.” she added.
Ray says the success was especially meaningful because not many people understand what exactly music educators do in the classroom or how much their work matters. While her administration is supportive, another challenge is that her school “desperately” needs new instruments. Ray says she will use some of her grant (拨款) money to buy more.
Ray plans to put some of the money towards an ongoing scholarship for students who want to pursue music when they graduate. She knows of several who want to go into music education themselves, which she finds especially rewarding.
“It is a hard profession, but it’s one that is truly, deeply personal and satisfying,” Ray said. “And there’s nothing else like it.”

While the majority of my classmates would bond over their dislike of learning an instrument, I found myself gradually expecting to learn new songs, practice them and perform them. Maybe it’s because my parents used Disney Channel as an incentive, or maybe I just needed their early push. Regardless, I came to appreciate music as a form of self-expression.
Learning musical notes has benefits to language development and cognitive (认知的) functions. Studies have shown that the left planum temporale, the part of the brain involved in hearing processing and receptive language, is active when musicians are either reading and listening to music or comprehending speech. But, when non-musicians are listening to music, their brains do not process it in the same area as language—while processing language is a natural ability, music awareness is something that can be obtained through practicing.
Take Finland, for example, where the average person learns to speak three to five languages. This is a result of the country’s custom of early music training, in which children learn the fundamentals of musical notes through songs and games. In fact, a study reveals a strong connection between children who study music before and the development of higher IQs and a bigger range of vocabulary.
In addition, evolutionary evidence from Oxford University highlights how speech and language started developing merely 200,000 years ago. It’s clear that the neural networks of both music and language have overlap (重叠部分), and that our use of speech as a form of communication has its roots in the original evolutionary history of music. So if you’re looking to learn something new, consider picking up a new instrument!
