Gary Messina, an investment banking analyst, now 38, was on his morning run along New York City's East River. Suddenly something caught his eye-a large 60-year-old man balancing on the four-foot-high railing (栏杆)that guarded the path from the water. As he got closer to the scene, the man took a step forward and jumped into the dark, rough river below. Messina rushed to the railing to find that the man was struggling in the water, clearly unable to swim. If he had intended to kill himself that morning, he had now changed his mind. The jumper screamed crazily for help as the rapids pulled him away from the seawall (防波堤).Other joggers also heard the man's calling. John Green, now 31, immediately dropped his phone and keys on land, along with his sneakers, and jumped in the cold river. "People had called the police, but it was unclear when they'd get there," says Green, a commercial insurance broker. "I just reacted." Soon after that, Messina joined him in the river.

The flow was rapid while the temperature was freezing. Reaching to the jumper seemed to be a nearly impossible task for the two rescuers. Luckily, just as the jumper was losing strength, Green grabbed hold of him. The pair were about 30 yards from the seawall when Messina caught up with them. They stabilized the man, with Messina supporting his back and Green holding him up from either side. He was unresponsive but not unconscious.

As the men made their way toward the concrete seawall that stretched for blocks in each direction, Green had an awful realization: With the water flowing a good eight feet below the lip of the wail and no ladder or dock(码头)in sight, there was no way out of the river. What's worse, the jumper, who was six foot two and weighed around 260 pounds, was deadweight in his rescuers' arms, which meant they could use only their legs to support themselves in the water.

Captain America had always been a hero for Timothy White during his childhood. White dressed up as Captain America for conventions, parades and the local Anti-violence Superhero Day. As a teenager, he once knocked fiercely in the door of a house that was on fire to see if anyone was trapped inside. Fortunately, the house was empty.

However, things were quite different this time. If Timothy White Jr. were Captain America, perhaps one throw of the superhero's trademark shield (盾牌) could have saved the day. But this was real life. When he spotted trouble on this September afternoon he wasn't wearing his costume and couldn't fall back on any superpowers.

It was rush hour in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. White, 38, was driving home from the non-profit he and his mother run called AMiracle4Sure, which helped formerly imprisoned individuals readapt to society. To get some fresh air from the long drive,he kept his window down on this autumn day. Suddenly, he noticed a gray four door pickup on the opposite side of the street. The truck was going 10 to 15 mph. It was hard to miss, since it was circling and tilting (倾斜) into the road before course-correcting, only to tilt into the road again.

"What an annoying driver!"White murmured. But as the truck drew closer, White took a glance at it. This time he got a good look at the problem:The driver appeared to be asleep! Worse still, they were coming up to a busy street. Pretty soon, this guy's going to crash into a house and kill himself or somebody else, White thought.

While many people would have kept on driving, that's not how White did—his girlfriend refers to him as Captain Harrisburg because of his permanent willingness to help people out. He had to stop that vehicle before anything terrible happened.

Forty of us — each with black rubber suits and flippers, glass-windowed face masks, snorkels, lead-weighted belts and spearfishing guns — were waiting for the judge’s 9:00 a.m. whistle (哨子) to announce that the annual South Australian Spearfishing Championship competition had begun. We all had five hours to bring the judges a bag of fish. The winner would be determined both by total weight and by number of different species.

By 12:30, when I dragged a heavy catch of fish to the beach, I could see from the other piles that I must be well up in the competition. I had 27 kilograms of fish on shore, including 14 species. It was now 12:35, and the contest closed at 2:00 p.m. On my last swim I had spotted quite a few large fish near a big, triangular-shaped rock I was sure I could find again.

Two of these fish were dusky morwongs, or “strongfish.” Either of these would be large enough to tip the scales (天平) in my favour. I decided. I swam out to the spot I’d picked. After several deep breaths, I held one, turned over and dived.

I advanced forward, hoping for a closein shot, but…

Then something huge bit me with strong force on my left side and pulled me through the water. Now the “thing” was pushing me forward with wild speed. The pressure on my back and chest was heavy, and I felt as if my insides on my left were being squeezed (挤) over to my right side. I had lost my face mask and couldn’t see in the dark. My spear gun was violently knocked out of my hand. How can I describe the sudden silence? A shark had me in its jaws (嘴).

Its teeth had closed around my chest and back, with my left arm over its head. I was being pushed face down ahead of it as we raced through the water. I stretched (伸长) my arms out behind and felt for the monster’s head. Suddenly, magically, the pressure was gone. The creature had relaxed its jaws. As I pulled my arm loose from the shark’s teeth, I felt pain I could have never imagined. But I had succeeded in freeing myself.

【推荐3】阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I like all kinds of chocolate, particularly bitter baking chocolate. My mother had bought a bar of it, and somehow I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

I was helping my father on the farm. It was right then that I got an idea. I could cut a chunk (厚块) of the chocolate. My mother would be sure to notice it, but before she found out who had done it, I could admit I’d taken it. Probably I would not even get a spanking (打屁股).

I waited until my mother was out feeding the chickens. Then I told my father I’d go in for some water. I got the bar down and was ready to cut it when I heard my mother coming back. I reacted quickly, slipping (迅速放置) the chocolate into my pocket and sliding out. Before I went back to help my father, I went to the barn (谷仓) and hid the chocolate there.

On the way out, I calmed down a little and could think better. I told myself that I hadn’t really stolen the whole bar of chocolate, because I meant to take only a little piece. If I put back the whole bar, I wouldn’t have done anything wrong.

I nearly decided to put it all back. But just thinking about that chocolate made my tongue almost taste the smooth bitterness of it. I got thinking that if I sliced (切薄片) about half an inch off the end with a sharp knife, my mother might never notice it.

Suddenly, I remembered what my father had said once—some of the family money was mine because I had helped to earn it. Why wouldn’t it be all right to think the bar of chocolate had been bought with my own money? That seemed to fix everything.

That night, unable to fall asleep, I got up, took a knife and sneaked out (溜出). Having taken the chocolate out from the barn, I laid it on the rail (栏杆) of the fence. The moon gave enough light for me to see what I was doing.

Paragraph 1:

Just as I was starting to cut it, I heard footsteps.

Paragraph 2:

Then he stood me and asked if I thought I had deserved it.
