According to a survey, the waste of food on the dining table occupies 10% of the total grain output. Last week Meituan co-published a proposal with a number of business organizations, calling on restaurants to stop food waste and help develop new eating habits for customers. “Restaurants should use official accounts on social media and live-streaming to promote and advocate food-saving actions,” the proposal said.
Meituan and the organizations are advocating that merchants offer guidance for consumers, including reminding them during the ordering process about the taste of the ingredients, portion sizes and other information about the dishes, to help them avoid food waste due to misleading information.
Catering associations in more than 18 provinces have also joined the campaign to remove food waste. The Wuhan Catering Association proposed an “N-1” ordering code for restaurants in which a group of 10 diners would only order enough for nine people. More food is only brought to the table if required. It has inspired people to rethink their relationship with food and waste.
On Friday, the China Cuisine Association announced that it had teamed up with Ele. me, a food delivery platform, to launch a “ half-dish plan", encouraging restaurants to provide customers with the option to order smaller portions. Besides, customers are encouraged to take their leftovers home.
To reduce food waste on social media platforms, some popular video platforms have stepped up content reviews of food-related live streams and implemented regulation of online eating shows. Now, if users search certain keywords, such as “eating show" or “competitive eaters", a cautionary message pops up to remind them to cherish food and keep a reasonable diet.

But recent months have seen a recovery of the humble bike across China, with an increasing number of people choosing cycling instead of driving to schools, to workplaces or to do sightseeing. The introduction of bike-sharing schemes, pioneered by start-ups like Ofo and Mobike, has brought the trend to a new level.
People can unlock the shared bikes by simply using their smartphone. The bikes are equipped with GPS and can be left anywhere in public for the next user. They're popular among many Chinese people as they provide an effective solution to the "last mile" problem, which refers to the final leg of a person's journey.
" In places where the subway doesn't extend, where it's difficult to change from one kind of transport to another, it's so easy to get where you want to go with Mobike," Hu Hong,29,told AFP. She pedals(骑车)to her Shanghai real-estate job.
However, the schemes have also led to problems such as illegal parking, vandalism(故意毁坏) and theft. Last month, two nurses in Beijing were placed under administrative punishment for five days for putting locks on two shared bikes. And in December, a man who stole a shared bike was sentenced to a 3-month detention(拘留),and fined 1 ,000 yuan by the Shanghai Minhang People's Court.
" Bike-sharing is a greener method of transportation and provides a user-friendly experience,"said Liu Xiaoming,vice-minister of transport.
" But it's a combination of online and offline business. Operators are usually strong in online services, but lack offline business experience, which causes problems."
Now, Chinese service operators are trying to solve the problems. For example, a bike- sharing company called Mobike sets a 100-point credit score for each user, with points taken in the case of bad behavior. Once a score drops below 80,bike rental is increased to 100 yuan per 30 minutes, up from 0.5 - 1 yuan.

The two groups said they are launching an “ice-breaking” campaign to urge retailers to respect consumers’ rights of knowing, choice and fair trade.
The groups’ call comes after media reports revealed that beverages served in some shops consist of a large amount of ice. In one case, a consumer in Nantong, Jiangsu province, bought two cups of coffee from popular chain beverage retailer Luckin Coffee and found that more than two-thirds of the cup was still filled with ice after the customer finished drinking the coffee. The customer complained in social media, questioning if the retailer was selling ice rather than coffee.
A customer service worker from Luckin Coffee told the newspaper that beverages from the company are strictly made according to the recipes and procedures, and iced drinks can’t be made with less ice. The worker further said that customers may choose iceless drinks instead. The consumer groups said that retailers should respect consumers’ rights of knowing by taking the initiative to ask about the amount of ice that customers want, and explain if certain products have to be made with fixed amounts of ice.
Retailers should also provide choices such as “extra ice”, “regular ice”, “less ice” or “iceless” for customers to choose, or simply separate ice cubes from drinks to let customers decide themselves, in order to respect their rights of choice, the groups said.
Moreover, retailers should be veracious in promoting their products and clearly mark that customers can ask for iceless drinks, the groups said, adding that they must reply in time if customers question about the amount of ice cubes.

Nearly every component of the Thanksgiving feast, from the turkey to the disposable roasting pan, after-dinner coffee and pumpkin pie will cost more this year. Labor shortages, higher transportation costs, supply chain disruptions and extreme weather are factors. In addition, Americans are spending more time cooking and eating at home, increasing the demand for foodstuffs.
Last month the US consumer price index for food rose 5.3 percent from a year ago, the most since January 2009, the Labor Department reported on Wednesday.
“More people are seeking help from food banks, said Brian Greene, president of the Houston Food Bank, the largest Feeding America food bank in the country. Because most of the food in the Houston Food Bank is surplus food from donations, rising food prices have not influenced the agency's food supply greatly,” he said. “The foods that would normally go to the supermarkets are decreasing, but on the other hand, for the foods that are going to the restaurants, we have a huge increase there.”
“We are seeing price increase from our vendors of between 2 percent to 10 percent for some items,” said Paule Pachter, chief executive of Long Island Cares-The Harry Chapin Food Bank. “The agency provides food and support services for a network of more than 374 community-based member agencie. The increase in food prices is causing more people to seek help from food pantries, but food donations are decreasing,” Pachter said. Food banks are seeing increasing “donor fatigue”, and more donors are willing to volunteer rather than make continuous donations of food. “We are experiencing a significant decrease in the total amount of food donations being made to the regional food bank. As of Sept 30 food donated through food drives is down by 20 percent compared with the same time in 2020. We are seeing a decrease in both in-person and virtual food drives being hosted this year.”
As food prices rose, the administration of US President Joe Biden announced an increase to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in August.

The number of Chinese studying abroad grew at a slower rate in 2018 compared with 2017, according to a recent report released by the Ministry of Education. In 2018, 662,100 Chinese went abroad to study, up 8.83 percent from a year earlier, while the growth rate was 11.7 percent in 2017.
A major reason for the slower growth is that more and more students have realized that overseas study does not necessarily guarantee a well-paid job, reported China Daily.
According to a 2018 report by the Center for China and Globalization (CCG), about a third of graduate returnees to China earn less than 6,000 yuan a month, while 25 percent make between 6,000 and 8,000 yuan a month.
For example, Lucy Liu, a woman from Beijing, was disappointed after being interviewed by a famous film studio in Beijing. She had just finished her postgraduate (研究生) studies in documentary production at New York University in the United States.
“The pay would be 150,000 yuan for one documentary, and at best I could finish one documentary a year,” Liu told South China Morning Post.
“After spending so much on my studies, I couldn’t accept that pay,” said Liu. She spent about 1 million yuan in tuition and living expenses while studying abroad.
Worse still, it takes over four months for over 50 percent of returned students to land a job, and only 20 percent get job offers before graduation, according to Qi Bin, from Haiwei Career Services, a company that specializes in employment for returnees.
Two major reasons are that they often miss the main job-seeking season while they’re abroad and they lack internship experience, Qi told China Daily.
However, this doesn’t mean studying overseas is useless.
On the contrary, it may provide students with good language and communication skills, an independent character and a global mindset, which are important for their career development, according to Qi.
“Studying overseas cannot guarantee everything, but foreign-educated students have great potential, and at some point their break will come,” Li Qing, a researcher from CCG, told the South China Morning Post.

The scientists were aboard a ship used by the Ocean Exploration Trust to make new discoveries in the world’s seas. The team had released a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) named Hercules to explore the sea bed. Equipped with a camera, Hercules can be controlled from the ship and show the team what is happening deep below the surface.
Hercules led the scientists to an unusual sight—a mysterious creature about the same size as the ROV. It seemed like a sea pen, a creature that is related to jellyfish (水母) and coral (珊瑚) and named for its looking similar to an old-fashioned quill, but the team knew that sea pens had never been spotted in the Pacific before. The only previous sightings of this species had been in the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean. This led the scientists to believe that it could be a newly discovered species.
The new creature was observed nearly two miles below the surface in an area of the Pacific Ocean west of Hawaii, which had not previously been explored by scientists. Steve Auscavitch,a biologist at Boston University in Massachusetts, was the lead scientist of the team.“From time to time, we come across some things that we never expect to see, and those are often the most powerful observations,” Auscavitch said.
In February, another group of scientists in Spain officially recognized and named two new types of sea pens. The team led by Auscavitch will need to do further research to determine whether the unusual creature they spotted is the first known sea pen in the Pacific Ocean or an entirely new species. Either way, the discovery is exciting.“It really does expand our knowledge about where animals can live and exist,” Auscavitch said.

One of England’s greatest movie directors was a man by the name of Alfred Hitchcock, born in 1899. He made many famous black and white movies that were scary and full of suspense, therefore his nickname as the “Master of Suspense”. His most famous films include The Birds and Psycho. Most of his films were murder mysteries, with clever dialogues, interesting plots and talented actors and actresses. He was also a revolutionary filmmaker and introduced many new techniques to the movie-making industry. Hitchcock had a roundish belly and a big nose, which made his profile very recognizable. He was not an actor but he loved to make cameo appearances in his own films.
Hitchcock was an unusual man. For example, he produced frightening movies about mysterious murders, and yet once he said his own greatest fear was the fear of small children!
Hitchcock also had a very clever imagination, which is especially clear in his movie The Birds. In this terrifying movie, a town is attacked by a large flock of black birds. The angry birds break into people’s homes to take revenge.
This man’s great imagination is also reflected in Psycho, which is one of the most famous British movies of all time. In Psycho, a young man claims to run a small motel with his elderly mother. But it turns out that the mother is fictional; she exists only in the young man’s head. At night, he dresses up like his mother and sits near the window for people to see. But after midnight he breaks into his guests’ bedrooms and murders them.

The next Tuesday dawned cold and rainy. Still, I had promised, and so I drove there. When I finally walked into Carolyn’s house and hugged and greeted my grandchildren, I said, “Forget the daffodils, Carolyn! The road is indiscernible in the cloud and fog, and there is nothing in the world except you and these children that I want to see!”
My daughter smiled calmly and said, “We drive in this weather all the time, Mum. You will never forgive yourself if you miss this experience.”
After about twenty minutes, we turned onto a small road and I saw a small church. On the far side of the church, I saw a hand-lettered sign that read “Daffodil Garden”.
We got out of the car and each took a child’s hand, and I followed Carolyn down the path. Then, we turned a corner of the path, and I looked up and gasped. Before me lay the most beautiful sight! There were five acres of flowers! “But who has done this?” I asked Carolyn. “It’s just one woman,” Carolyn answered. “That’s her home,” Carolyn pointed to a well-kept A-frame house that looked small and modest in the midst of all that glory. We walked up to the house. On the patio(平台), we saw a poster. “Answers to the Questions I Know You Are Asking” was the headline.
The first answer was a simple one. “50,000 bulbs(鳞茎),” it read. The second answer was, “One at a time, by one woman.” The third answer was, “Began in 1958.”
I thought of this woman whom I had never met, who, more than fifty years before, had begun -- one bulb at a time -- to bring the beauty and joy to the mountain top.

Jessie Behan, president of the 25th Hour Coalition(联盟)which is a group of Canadian women who have changed to a longer day, said the struggle for women to maintain work-1ife balance motivated her to research the body’s natural clock.“Many of my girlfriends are having kids, getting married, and I see the sufferings of dealing all that when you’re a working woman,”she said.“Women like myself are sick of living their lives by a 24-hour clock.”
A 2007 study by Charles Czeisler found a switch to longer days could be beneficial, especially for frequent travelers, shift workers, astronauts and those who experience trouble sleeping or waking.
In a similar study,Czeisler showed the body’s natural clock averages 24 hours and 11 minutes in both young and older people. The current 360-degree clock has 720 minutes, giving each minute 0.5 degree. With the new 25-hour day,30 minutes is added to each 12-hour period making each minute 0.48 degree.
While still a relatively small movement—the 25th Hour Coalition has 160 Facebook members,Behan is hoping for large changes.“The goal is to get as many women on board;there’s no harm in just trying it out and seeing. If it gets big, maybe the government will decide to standardize it.”
A recent online survey by Reader's Digest, which included 150 people in each of the 13 countries, suggests it's not just Canadians looking for longer days.Readers were asked“what would you do with an extra hour”if given a choice between sleep, work, exercise and family time.In Spain, half of respondents(被访者)said they’d like an extra hour in the day to devote to family time. The same was found for respondents in Brazil, the US and Britain, who chose family time over sleep, which came in at a close second.Only in India did work top the list with 50 percent of respondents claiming they could use an extra hour at the office.

Hurricane Harvey dumped five feet of rain in some areas, and nearly six feet of storm surge(风暴潮) made sure that the water had nowhere to go but into the houses, businesses, and lives of thousands of residents. More than 100 people died and $125 billion in damage was recorded before the waters went down weeks later.
About 30 miles due west of Houston, Katy, Texas, a former farm town of 18,000 residents, took a hard hit. Nearly 700 of its homes and 80 businesses were damaged or destroyed. But locals didn't wait for the rain to stop before opening their doors, refrigerators, and wallets to first responders, neighbors, strangers, and even pets.
Beaver Aplin, owner of the popular Buc-ee's chain of convenience stores, was preparing for the grand opening of his newest location just outside Katy. The 50,000-square-foot store was fully stocked with everything from food, water, and toiletries to batteries and Band-Aids. When the storm hit, Aplin opened the store early without thinking twice. He put the word out to first responders, telling them to take what they needed, free of charge.
Meanwhile, locals ran, drove, and paddled to rescue their neighbors stuck in the water. When the water was too deep, rescue came by boat. Pat Lester drove his air-boat into town from his home on the outskirts(郊外). He had seven life jackets, so he scooped up seven people at a time, starting with pregnant women, the elderly, and anyone who was ill.
These are just a small part of the stories of heroism that came out of Katy and all over Texas during one of the worst natural disasters the country has ever seen.

November arrived grey and busy, and going into an even more stressful. December, I was filled with anxious thoughts.
A visit to my father’s grave is often a good chance to cry and when I leave I feel a little more at peace. But this time was different. I drove home and every night for the rest of that week, I cried.
On Saturday, I watched a TV program teaching baking, and then I started to learn. By the end of the weekend, I had a dining room table covered with sweet treats. I packaged them up in tins, attached a label to each of them with “winter love” on it, and dropped them off on a few of my neighbors’ porches (门廊) before work. It shocked me how much it lightened my mood, seeing a small package lost on a porch.
The thanks I received later from the neighbors made me light up. It felt so good, and it distracted me from my dark thoughts.
By January I had developed a routine: on Sunday I’d bake cookies and package them up, and on Monday I'd deliver them. Every week I added a few different people to my delivery route, baked a few different kinds of cookies.
Somewhere along the way things started showing up on my doorstep a homemade cup, a pair of socks with tiny cookies and even a gift certificate from the local bookstore. Every single one melted my heart. But what I really appreciated was how people began to share their own stories of mental health with me. There is no greater honor than to be trusted with another’s life. I was overwhelmed by the love and care of my community. It humbled me that something so simple had created such incredible kindness. It reminded me that there was good in me, in my neighbors, in the world.
I was shifting into a new season of light, while letting go of a season of darkness. What had begun as an attempt to bring light into my own darkness had been transformed into a story more beautiful than I could have ever dreamed. It reminded me that there is beauty in being kind. That life is tough, but there is a quiet strength in knowing you are not alone.
