“Happy birthday, dear Rhea, happy birthday to you!” Silence penetrated (穿透) the room.

“Make a wish," my mom said in a sweet whisper. Now, I’m a straight A student, confident and popular, but that’s not what I was a year ago. It was my mom’s love that made me what I am today. Looking around the room filled with my friends, I couldn't help but smile.

I wish...

Memories flooded back. The December morning breeze brushed my long, black hair as I stepped towards the doors of Hagenberg High. It was my first day of school. Only two weeks ago, my mom and I migrated to America, hoping for a bright new life.

My English was poor, and I was alone, like a lost little kid. I unknowingly avoided interacting with anyone because I was afraid they’d laugh in my face. When my English was better, I decided, I would come up to people and maybe manage to say, “Whussup?”

Finally in gym class, a friendly brown face. She almost looked like me, only happier .Her name was Caroline. At lunchtime we found ourselves enjoying the cafeteria food. She wanted me to meet her friends. “Don’t worry Rhea,” she assured me, calling me “sister”, “You’ll fit right in.”

And I did. It was as if some foreign soul entered my body and made me do things against my will. I found myself drinking beer, smoking cigarettes and skipping school. I didn't even like the taste of beer. The moment it touched my tongue I felt like I had to spit it back. But I didn't. I couldn’t afford to look bad and lose my new “friends”. I began to miss at least one day of school a week to hang out with them. Then I missed two, three, even four days in a row.

But while I was out having fun with my “friends,” inside I was full of conflict, unhappiness and regret. I stopped practicing my English sentences in front of the mirror and instead practiced, “I don’t know why the school called, mom. There must be something wrong in the system because I did not miss school today.”

【推荐1】阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

When I was elected the president of Student’s Union, everybody congratulated me on my campaign saying it was one of the best the school had seen. Our principal assigned me my first mission in my political career—raising money to build a coffeehouse on the campus. I was thrilled and ambitious about it.

Having determined my goal, I set up a small group of helpers to do fundraising. One of them was Gary.

He had a reputation for being super active and energetic. You could easily pick him out during the lunch break for he was always enjoying himself by throwing Frisbees (飞盘) to someone just passing by. But meanwhile, he was extraordinarily clever and eloquent (雄辩的). As the leader of the Debating Club, he never had any losses. When I humbly asked him to join the fundraising group, he raised his eyebrows, obviously, he didn’t expect someone so serious as I would invite someone so playful as him. At my insistence, he finally agreed.

Clearly, I was right about him. Gary persuaded dozens of students into donating. He helped me organize our group meetings, discussing and distributing tasks in great detail. When the team members met obstacles and lost heart on the edge of giving up, he made the best of his humor to cheer everyone up. Gradually, all of us who participated felt like we were part of something much bigger than we were. We were building a community and it felt great.

They say “absolute power corrupts (腐败) absolutely”. It sure did in my case. There was I, one of the most-liked guys on campus, powerful and making a difference, until my ego took over and destroyed everything. I let all the power go to my head. My arrogance and my pride were out of control. I began speaking down to my group members, demanding they listen to me because I thought I knew what was best. I believed that I could accomplish this mission without any of them and I wanted to take credit for everything. Gary tried to convince me that I had changed, and that I was abusing my position, but I wasn’t listening.

Snowflake Bentley

In the days when Vermont farmers worked the land and spent time with livestock, there lived a boy Willie Bentley who loved snow more than anything in the world. Vermont is no stranger to snow and Bentley’s happiest days were snowstorm days. He watched snowflakes (雪花) on his glove, on the vast farm fields, and on the dark metal handle of the barn (谷仓) door. He said snow was the blessings of Nature. However, he could not share snowflakes because he could not save them.

Later, when his mother gave him an old microscope, he mainly used it to look at snow. While kids of his neighbors chased hens and had snowball fights, Willie was catching snowflakes. Day after stormy day he studied the icy crystals (冰晶).

Their delicate patterns were even more beautiful than he had imagined. Willie decided he must find a way to save snowflakes so others could see their wonderful designs. For three winters he tried drawing snow crystals. They always melted in the black tray (托盘) that he used to catch them before he could finish the drawings.

When he was sixteen, Willie read of a camera with its own microscope. “If I had that camera I could photograph snowflakes, he told his mother.” Willie’s mother knew that he would not be happy until he could share what he had seen.

‌“Spending time on snow is just foolishness, his mother said. Still, she loved his son. When Willie was seventeen his parents spent their savings and bought the camera. It cost as much as ten cows. Willie was sure it was the best of all cameras. Even so, his first pictures were failures—no better than shadows. Yet he would not quit. Mistake by mistake, snowflake by snowflake, Willie worked through every storm. Winter ended, the snow melted, and he had no good pictures. He waited for another season of snow. One day, in the second winter, he tried a new experiment. And it worked! Willie had figured out how to photograph snowflakes!” Now everyone can see the great beauty in a tiny crystal,” he said.
