Galaxy saw a man and a woman who communicated with sign language at the train station when she was on the way home one evening. She noticed that the woman was asking the man for direction. He told her that he did not know. Galaxy decided to help them. She had learned sign language when she served as a volunteer in the deaf and mute (聋哑的) school. Then she showed the woman the direction and left her email address to them in case they needed her help later.
She received an email from that man the next day. Kazrim was his name. Galaxy replied his mail sincerely. They both started chatting online soon after and began seeing each other. Although they only communicated with the sign language, it never bothered her.
Galaxy grew fond of him gradually. Obviously, Kazrim was the same too. He presented Galaxy with a bunch of sunflowers and asked her sincerely, “Are you willing to be my girlfriend? Galaxy was pleasantly surprised. She requested him to give her some time to persuade her parents. As she had expected, her parents were furious after they had learned of their love story. Galaxy explained, “Kazrim is an excellent and a very optimistic person. He has a very positive attitude towards life and work. He cares for others always. He is 100% better than the normal. Moreover, the mute is still a human. He should have a perfect and wonderful love.”
Her parents asked to see him then. The very worried Galaxy took Kazrim home a few days later. When they were on the train, Kazrim told her, “I'm going to tell your parents that I'll be looking after you well with all my life!” Galaxy was deeply moved. As soon as they had entered the house, Galaxy introduced him to her parents. She said, “This is Kazrim.” Just right after her speech, an unbelievable thing happened. Kazrim threw the gift away and held her in his arms tightly. He said. “You CAN talk?” It was the same question that Galaxy wanted to ask, too. The four people were shocked all of a sudden. As a matter of fact, Kazrim always believed that Galaxy was a mute and he still fell in love with her deeply.

As the story goes, I was three days old and Mom was singing “The Name Game” song to me: “Christine Bo-Bean-Banana-Fanna-Fo-Feen.” By day four, I was given a new name ---- Christine-Bo-Bean, or just Bo-Bee to my mother. Now, I am Bo to her and close friends.
Why is this nickname(昵称)so important to me? I once read a book with a passage about True Names which explains that when a person’s true name is spoken, she has a distinct aura(光环)around her. Although I have been Bo to my mother all my life, I recently discovered that my true name is not on my birth certificate; it’s the name that is as unique and memorable as I am.
People usually know me as Christine. They still see me as a quiet, bookish child. They don’t know who I am now. My most recent hopes, fears, goals, dreams and opinions escape their notice; it is easier to think of me as I was. In their minds, they have a box labeled “Christine” in which I fit neatly, and as Christine, I was content with the perfect packaging.
Those who call me Bo or Bo-Bee really know me. They remember who I was and realize I have changed. Bo is a tight squeeze in the old “Christine” boxes. The Bo I am is ever-changing, ever-growing and ever-learning.
When I was Christine, I was quiet, and easily scared. I feared groups, meeting new people and sharing my opinions. I was more comfortable with a book than my best friend. As Christine, I thought everyone was better than I was.
As Bo, I still love my books, but I want to discuss them. As Bo, my dream is to live where I can experience new things and meet new people. I dream about being alone on a stage lit by a single spotlight; I have that confidence now. I am equal to those I once saw as better than me.
A name shouldn’t make such a difference, but sometimes, when a person finds his or her True Name, they develop a new shine visible to friends, family and especially themselves.
I can’t always be Bo. Sometimes exposing myself is still scary and I feel too nervous; I want to hide in those old boxes. Mostly, however, I am ready for the world. So, just call me Bo.

“Let me get this straight,” he said, “You went to college for four years so you could come here every day because you have the hope that someday you might say something that will influence someone?” He shook his head as if I were crazy and walked away looking confused. I’m one of those people who look back and wish they had said something smart or witty, or swift.
Even though that particular student might no longer wonder why I teach, there are days when I wonder. On those days, I remind myself of the real reasons I teach:
It’s in my blood. My mother was my most influential teacher, and she was a 6th grade reading teacher until her death in 1990. She instilled(逐渐灌输)in me a love of reading and the knowledge that education opens doors.
Teaching is a way to make a difference. If you throw a stone in a pond the ripples(波纹) go on and on until they reach the shore. You can’t have ripples without a “stone.” Good teachers throw stones that make a positive difference, and that’s what I strive to do.
I genuinely love teenagers. I want to share with others what I know and what I have learned through the years. Life is full of ups and downs, and if I can help students avoid some potholes on the road of life, I want to do so. If they’ll allow me to celebrate their victories with them, I want to do too. Teaching isn’t for everyone, but I know I made the right career choice.

“For the rent.” Mama would say, counting out the big silver pieces.
“For the groceries.” Another pile of coins.
“Teacher says this week I'll need a notebook.” That would be my sister Christine, my brother Nels or me. Mama would put one or two coins to the side.
We would watch with anxious interest. At last, Papa would ask,” Is that all?” When Mama nodded, we could relax a little. Mama would look up and smile,” Good. We do not have to go to the Bank downtown.” We were all so proud of Mama's Bank Account. It gave us such a warm, secure feeling. No one else we knew had money in a big bank downtown.
I remember when the Jensens down the street were put out because they couldn't pay their rent. We children watched the big strange men carry out the furniture, ignoring the tears of Mrs. Jensens. “Might this, could this, happen to us?”
“We have a Bank Account.” Mama comforted me calmly, and suddenly I could breathe again.
Whatever happened, we always knew we still had the Bank to depend upon.
That was twenty years ago. Last year I sold my first story. When the check came, I hurried over to Mama's and put it in her lap.” For you, I said,” to put in your Bank Account.” I noticed for the first time how old Mama and Papa looked. Papa seemed shorter, and Mama's hair was silver now.
Mama fingered the check and looked at Papa.” Good,” she said, and her eyes were proud.
“Tomorrow,” I told Mama, “you must take it to the Bank.”
“You will go with me, Katrin? But...”Mama stopped for a moment and looked at me.
“There is no account,” she continued. “In all my life, I've never been inside a bank.”
And when I didn't-couldn't-answer, Mama said seriously. “It is not good for little ones to be afraid-to not feel secure.”

On Dec.26, Gelinne, 60, was looking out the back windows of his home at the frozen lake. Then an airplane came into his sight. Gelinne looked up just in time to see that small air plane a few hundred yards away, losing control.
As the plane disappeared behind the trees, Gelinne, a former Navy officer, realized it was going to land in the lake. He flashed on a moment from more than 20 years earlier: Gelinne was at work in a bank. When a fire alarm rang, he escaped from the chaos but has always wondered if he could have stayed inside and helped.
On this day, Gelinne didn’t hesitate. He ran down to the waterfront. The plane had skidded (侧滑) to a stop on the broad, frozen lake, far from shore. It was now sinking. The pilot was standing on the wing. Gelinne knew from his Navy training that even a few minutes in the icy water could kill the pilot.
Gelinne tested the ice with his foot and decided not to take any chances walking on it. So he pulled a boat out from under his back deck.
Then he set off, pushing his boat across the ice. It was tough work. When Gelinne reached the plane, it had broken through the ice and sunk; only its tail was visible. The pilot was standing on a tail wing, submerged up to his chest, surrounded by open water. Gelinne pushed his boat off the ice and into the water, paddling (划) toward the pilot.
Gelinne focused on keeping the pilot calm, joking, “Just hang on to the boat as if you were hugging your wife.” The pilot grabbed the boat’s bow, but Gelinne knew he had to get the pilot out of the water and up onto the shelf of unbroken ice behind him before the man lost too much body heat.
By now a police officer had arrived and radioed for help. A lifeboat appeared, breaking through ice as it arrived. It picked up the pilot and rushed him to safety. Later the boat returned to help Gelinne, now extremely tired, to shore.
“I’m 60 years old,” Gelinne says. “There was no way I could get him to shore.” Still, he was satisfied he’d gone the right way that day.

From the airport to the heart of the city, he did 100 km per hour, bypassing lorries, motorbikes and taxi-vans crowed with people. The second thing was that he knew everybody and everything about Cape Town. This was good for me.
On the first day, Thabo took me to the suburbs with unpronounceable names — ORanjezicht — from where you can watch the sun go down on Africa. The next day we went to Cape Flats, the run-down township where the buildings were made of cardboard and rusty (生锈的)iron. It was truly vast — nearly a million people live here, side by side. Skinny dogs slid out of the way as Thabo zoomed along roads of mud and rotting rubbish. Some people waved, others stared. Children ran barefoot by the car.
Later that night we walked around the busy Victoria, Cape Town’s most fashionable area. The contrast from the township could not be greater: the smells of cooking rose from the kitchens — Asian, French, Italian. The bars and restaurants were packed, and I soon found out why. Cape Town is a paradise for gourmets (美食家), seafood-lovers and people like me, who just like eating. We went into a charming little pubs, and Thabo told me I couln’t leave Cape Town without trying some Cape seafood, so I did. It’s delicious.
On my final morning, we spent an hour sitting outside a cafe. Then we were driving again, experiencing the diverse landscape — green valleys. It was a great way to say goodbye to a place I knew only too briefly. I promised myself, and Thabo, that I would be back.

Horse Caravan (马车)
Go a bit old-school with a horse caravan in Ireland. While riding a horse may not offer much in the way of impressiveness, how about getting a horse to a carriage that includes cooking and sleeping areas? That sounds a bit more remarkable. Plus, the horse-drawn carriages allow a fresh perspective on the countryside and beaches.
Terra Bus
Made in Calgary, only roughly 20 of these Terra Bus Ice Explorer all-terrain vehicles exist and they almost all serve the Icefields Parkway and the Athabasca Glacier in Jasper, Canada. Designed specifically for glacier travel, the six-wheel, 49-foot-long vehicle looks like the most robust (强大的)tour bus on the planet. And it is. The Terra Bus Ice Explorer can handle 56 passengers and nearly any sort of ice, mud, sand, snow and rock the Canadian Rocky Mountains have to offer.
The Central-Mid-Levels Escalator (自动扶梯)
If this Hong Kong escalator system didn't exist, you'd have all sorts of stairs to deal with to climb between the western and central Hong Kong districts. This system of 20 escalators, built in 1993, combines to become the longest outdoor covered escalator in the world, running a total length of 2,624 feet and rising 442 feet in the process. From end to encl it's a ride lasting 20 minutes.
Symphony of the Seas
At 1, 181 feet in length and a gross tonnage of 228, 000, the Royal Caribbean Symphony of the Seas is the largest cruise ship in the world. The steel ship features seven distinct on-board neighborhoods, surfing, ziplining, ice-skating, 3D movies and pools. Symphony is powered by solar energy.

【推荐2】I recently gave a talk about zero waste living to university students. During the Q&A afterward, the unavoidable question of cost came up. One student pointed out that he “can’t afford to buy $30 toothpaste.” While the $30 price may be a bit generous, the student did raise a good point -that buying zero-waste products is often more expensive than the overly-packaged conventional ones.
I tried to handle the question as best I could in the moment, but I kept thinking about it afterward. I’m writing about it because I’m sure many others have similar doubts about their own abilities to reduce waste without breaking the bank.
First, once you begin to explore the zero waste world, you quickly realize how pointless many products in your life are. You start using fewer, buying less, and using them interchangeably. Soon you’ll find yourself spending less money overall, which balances the higher cost of the zero waste ones. The total number of products in my bathroom decreased by 50% when I became more focused on waste reduction.
Second, if you stop to examine those zero-waste products, you’ll see that they are usually of superior quality. Companies rarely redesign their packaging to be reusable without also upgrading them to be healthier, safer, and greener. So you’re paying extra money not just for non-disposable(一次性的)packaging, but also for a better product that does less harm.
In my experience, higher-quality skincare products last longer than cheap ones. My personal habits have developed gradually, too. Knowing an item costs more leads me to use it in small quantities and use it to the very end. Moreover, I sometimes even make my own. The price-per-unit is cheap.
To quote Lindsey Miles, a zero waste blogger, “Zero waste is not about what we can afford to buy. It is about what we choose not to buy.” To that student who got me thinking about this, I’d recommend starting with what matters to you. Over time you will figure out where you get the most value for your money. In return, you’ll gain a sense of liberation from the consumer culture, and a rewarding sense of accomplishment.
1. What can we benefit from zero waste products?A.Saving regularly. | B.Balancing totally. | C.Living conveniently. | D.Spending -economically. |
A.Zero-cost. | B.Top-grade. | C.Non-breakable. | D.Well-packed. |
A.Buy what is necessary. | B.Choose what is affordable. |
C.Consider where we save money. | D.Learn what consumer culture means. |

C.To promote a new product. | D.To advocate eco-consumption. |

At the end of the day, several of the students suggested hanging out in the city for a while before getting dinner. They ended up spending thousands of dollars at the clothing store. It was only when they had finished that they decided to eat dinner at a place across the street. In the nicest restaurant I had ever been to, I ordered the cheapest appetizer I could find, and sat in silence as the students around me reminisced about their most recent vacations to Europe.
When the dinner was over, a student suggested seeing a Broadway play, and one guy told the group Cabaret was playing for only $ 250 a ticket. I knew I wasn't going to be spending $ 250 for a show. “I have a lot of homework,” I said. “But thanks anyway.” I walked back to the hotel alone.
To be very honest, I find it fascinating to be surrounded by classmates who come from wealthy families I have never experienced. Meanwhile, I'm not embarrassed for being unable to afford the things my classmates buy. I'm proud of who I am, and where I've come from.
On the other hand, one of my classmates had gotten to college on a needs-based scholarship. He didn't have any money. He didn't have a car and relied on brisk walks to get anywhere. He couldn't even afford food, so he worked part time at college food service to make a few dollars and grab leftovers for meals. He certainly kept me grounded as I felt like a spoiled brat using money so freely and buying myself a sandwich whenever I felt hungry.
So, while I was ridiculously wondering about my insufficiency, he showed what real determination and pride were.

【推荐1】Water is everywhere, from soil to the cells inside our own bodies. Depending on factors like location, age, and sex, the average human is between 55-60% water. So what role does water play in our bodies, and how much do we actually need to drink to stay healthy?
The water in our bodies works to adjust temperature, and to nourish(滋养) the brain and other body parts. Water isn't only in our blood. An adult's brain and heart are almost three quarters water, while lungs are 83% water.
If we are mainly made of water, why do we still need to drink so much? Well, each day we lose two to three liters(升) through our sweat, urine(尿) and even just from breathing, which helps our bodies get rid of waste. While these functions are necessary to our survival, we need to compensate for the water loss. Keeping a balanced water level is essential to avoid dehydration(脱水), which can have bad effects on overall health. Dehydration is usually caused by over consumption of water in a short amount of time. It can cause obvious drops in energy, mood and blood pressure. In severe cases, it will cause headache, and even death.
However, on a normal basis, maintaining a well-hydrated system is easy to manage for those of us who are fortunate enough to have access to clean drinking water. For a long time, it’s commonly believed that we should drink eight glasses a day. But now it is suggested that the amount of water we need to drink depend largely on our weight and the environment. The recommended daily intake varies from between 2.5-3.7 liters of water for men, and about 2-2.7 liters for women.
While directly drinking water is the healthiest, coffee or tea can also be alternatives to make up for water loss. Water within food makes up about a fifth of our daily water intake. Fruits and vegetables like strawberries and cabbage are over 90% water, and can provide valuable nutrients as well. Drinking well also has various long-term benefits. Studies have shown that it can lower the chance of stroke(中风) and reduce the risk of certain types of cancer. No matter what it is, getting the right amount of liquid makes a healthy life.
1. Which of the following belongs to the functions of water in our bodies?
A.Removing body waste. | B.Increasing temperature. |

The glacier moss balls are commonly called “glacier mice”, and were the subject of a recent study published online in Polar Biology this month. The study’s authors believe that they develop from impurities ( 杂质 ) on ice surfaces. “They’re not attached ( 黏附 ) to anything and they’re just resting there on ice,” said one of the authors. “They’re bright green in a world of white.”
The moss balls don’t stay at rest for long, though. They moved about 2.5 centimeters per day on average. Another one of the study’s authors pointed out that movement is a necessity for the glacier moss balls because the entire surface of the ball must occasionally get exposed to the sun. “These things must actually roll around or else that moss on the bottom would die,” she said.
Glacier mice have ever been spotted in Alaska, Iceland, Svalbard and South America, but scientists still have a lot to learn about them.
One of the biggest questions is why the moss balls, which can live for at least six years, move the way they do. The researchers tried to explain this strange phenomenon in many ways.
First, they thought the balls had rolled downhill, but later found that they weren’t going down a slope ( 斜坡 ). Then, they thought the wind was blowing them in consistent directions. But when they measured the dominant direction of the wind, that didn’t explain it either. And finally, they considered the sun, which melts the ice and may make the moss balls move, but the direction of incoming solar radiation wasn’t in the direction which the balls were going in. Still confused with this problem, the researchers said that they hope that one day, future generations will “get to the bottom of these great mysteries”.
1. What interests the researchers most?A.The discovery of glacier mice. |
