The Arctic has long fascinated people across the world, so it isn’t surprising that stories of the Arctic have inspired movies and TV shows. Here are 4 of our favorite Arctic shows and movies.
Nanook of the North (1922)
It’s man against nature in this classic silent film from 1922, which tells the story of an Inuit hunter named Nanook and his family as they struggle to survive in the harsh environment of Canada’s Hudson Bay region. Although some of the scenes were staged, we see how the Inuit people live. We see how Nanook uses a harpoon (鱼叉) to hunt seals on the ice. We also see how they construct an igloo (冰屋) one block at a time into the famous icy, domed (穹顶的) structure.
Arctic (2019)
What better place for a survival story than the Arctic? In the film Arctic, noted by The New York Times as “madness in a frozen wasteland”, one man must survive in the icy landscape after his plane crashes. He must fish, find water, send distress (危难) signals and build a makeshift (简易的) camp to stay alive. The film, which was shot in the cold wilderness of Iceland, shows just how tough life can be in the Arctic.
Klaus (2019)
Klaus is a family holiday film about the origins of Santa Claus, the favorite old man at Christmas. Santa is said to live in the North Pole, but in Klaus, he lives in Smeerensburg, a Norwegian settlement on the island of Svalbard. There, a young postman convinces the town’s kids to send letters to the loner woodsman named Klaus, and in return he will reward them with toys. The local Arctic culture of the Sami is also present in the film.
High Arctic Haulers (2020)
This documentary series describes a Canadian shipping firm, Groupe -Desgagnes, which supplies the isolated communities in Canada’s Arctic Archipelago. The shipping crew must be faced with sea ice and cruel weather to get to their remote destinations. The show gives an important glimpse into the difficulties of transporting goods in the far north.

The film stars UK actor Benedict Cumberbatch as a wealthy man named Henry Sugar, who develops the ability to see through objects. At the very beginning he uses this power to cheat at cards and win big while gambling (赌博), and later turns his fortune into a global network of orphanages (孤儿院).
Dialogue style
Running for just 40 minutes, the film features Anderson’s quick-paced dialogue style. He also asked the actors to recite lines directly to the audience by looking at the camera, creating “the effect of listening to a podcast (播客) while turning the pages of a lovely picture book quickly”, commented CNN.
Visual style
Anderson’s work is immediately recognizable for his visual style as well. The “Anderson aesthetic (美学)” often uses bright color palettes (调色板) to both add visual appeal and make various ideas known to the audience, reported Yahoo News. In The Grand Budapest Hotel for example, Anderson uses a color palette of deep blues, rich greens and warm pinks to recreate an old-world European feel. In The Royal Tenenhaums the red tracksuits worn by Chaz, one of the main characters, show deep-seated anger resulting from parental trauma (创伤).
Symmetrical style
Another style is his use of symmetry (对称). Many of the shots involve (涉及) a person facing the camera, with the elements around the character set up in a sense of order and balance. Anderson explained to the media that it is out of his nature to “arrange things in a frame”, which he compares to how people can’t change the individuality of their handwriting. “You might try to write very well, but really, you have something your brain tends to do”, he said.
However, his obsessive repetition of these stylistic choices in his films has led some to question his ability to innovate (创新). In response to this, Anderson stated, “It’s not something I make any effort to do. I just want to make films that are personal but interesting to an audience.”

“The central message of the story,” the show’s composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber, said recently, “is about the driving force of music.” Lloyd Webber, who is behind such Broadway hits as Phantom of the Opera and Cats, runs a music education foundation. He is allowing schools to license the musical while it’s still on Broadway.
School of Rock tells the story of Dewey Finn, an ambitious rock star played by Alex Brightman. When Finn’s musical career hits a dead end, he gets a job as a teacher. While in the classroom, he encourages his fifth graders to form a rock band.
All of the actors play their own instruments during the performance. “If you say that you can do it, and you work hard enough, then you can do it.” said Evie Dolan, who learned to play bass for the role of Katie.
While the musical is very similar to the movie, lyricist Glenn Slater added new songs, including You’re in the Band and Stick It to the Man.
“I really love You’re in the Band,” said the musical’s director, Laurence Connor, “I love that moment when the audience sees the children pick up their instruments for the first time and really play, and find rock music for the first time.”
Bobby Mackenzie, who plays Tomika, said that the experience of expressing herself through music has been a pleasing one. When asked what advice she has for ambitious musicians, she said, “If it is really what you want to do, go for it. Work as hard as you can.”

It was difficult, 19-week trip, during which she explored the rainforests of Borneo, the Amazon and Congo, travelling around using variety of means of transport, including hot-air balloons and canoes. “I’m interested in the way animals communicate with each other. It was sometimes dangerous making the program -- I even went swimming with piranha(水虎鱼)fish. But the worst thing was insects. On one occasion I had 70 sand-fly bites on my arm. Luckily I didn’t get sick. I prefer not to take tablets every day, but if I get a fever, take some medicine immediately.”
Filming the series was exciting, but also frightening at times. Her most challenging experience was climbing a 100-meter tree in Borneo, as she has a great fear of heights. “I had to keep pulling myself further and further upwards. All I wanted to do was get down again. Suddenly the safety equipment didn’t look very strong and I thought that my ropes would break and I would crash to the ground.”
What did she enjoy most about returning to London? “When I’ve been away in hot uncomfortable conditions for a long time I dream about an ice-cold drink and my bed at home! These questions are answered in the nature documentary Animals with Cameras, produced by the BBC. The three-part series was first aired in the U.K.in 2018.To explore animals’ stories ”told“ by the animals themselves, the documentary’s filmmakers worked with scientists to develop cameras that wild animals could wear.
“Never before have we seen such high-quality footage(连续镜头)directly from the animals’ points of view,” BBC Nature executive producer Fred Kaufman told PBS. “This miniseries greatly expands our comprehension of animal behavior and this camera technology opens up new possibilities for discovering so much more.”
Indeed, the groundbreaking technology provides a new viewpoint of the animal kingdom. New cameras with enough battery life to shoot for hours at a time were designed to be comfortable enough for animals to wear, according to the documentary’s camera designer Chris Watts.
The technical challenges didn’t stop there. Some animals were very curious about the equipment, with some even fighting with each other for the chance to wear a camera. In the case of chimpanzees, “We had to create dummy(仿造的)cameras, so that every chimpanzee could get one,” the wildlife miniseries’ cameraman Gordon Buchanan told Live Science.
For animals that were comfortable enough to be with human beings, the cameras could be fitted and removed by hand. But for others, the cameras came off automatically using a timed release and were collected afterward. This meant that the cameras needed to be as tough as possible.
To avoid disturbing the animals, scientists who were good at dealing with wildlife came to help by putting the cameras on the animals. “The last thing we want to do is cause them distress,” the documentary’s producer Dan Rees told the BBC. “To follow an animal in the first place, there had to be a clear benefit in terms of knowledge about it that might be useful to protect a species in the future.”
Their efforts certainly paid off. “Footage that captures(捕捉)these rare and exciting glimpses of animals’ habits is important to scientists, but documentaries like Animals with Cameras also resonate with the audience, connecting them with the beauty and danger of wildlife in their natural environments,” Live Science noted.
