When my friend suggested going to the thrift shop, instantly I thought “I hope no one I know sees me”. It was the same when my cousin commented on my new furniture and Japanese fine-bone-china bowls and asked where I got them. They were from the local thrift shop but instead I said “from the antique shop”.
Many people in my Greek-Cypriot community would despise me if I said I shopped at the thrift shop. They may pity me, consider me poor, a failure. Immigrants sacrificed their families and homes for a better life. Buying a house and having enough money to live comfortably, to educate your children and see them also live comfortably, are a big part of the immigrant dream. But has this dream made us materialistic at the cost of our own planet?
Our love for purchasing the latest trendy clothes or furniture, then donating them when we are tired of them has become normal. I was once like this. But after watching the documentary The True Cost I learned donated clothes that don’t get sold are sent to developing nations, many of them ending up in landfills (垃圾填埋地). In addition, your new dress requires electricity and materials to make. But if you buy a second-hand dress, that’s one less dress in a landfill and one less new dress to be made.
A friend introduced me to the thrift shop only a few years ago. My first item was a dress she gifted me. It was lovely and I loved it. Nobody could tell it was second-hand. This opened me up to purchasing more second-hand high quality branded clothes. Once I dropped in on a friend and was impressed by how she decorated her apartment. “It’s all second-hand.” she said. I couldn’t believe it. The truth is a lot of things sold at the thrift shop are in new or almost new condition. That’s when I made the decision to only buy second—hand things.
Selling second-hand things isn’t anything new but what the planet needs is more buyers. There is so much excess production in the world. So stop feeling ashamed, and let’s get shopping.

At other locations of the store, shoppers enter by scanning the Amazon Go app. That's still the case for customers paying with a credit card, but people paying with cash will have an “entry associate” scan them through the turnstiles (旋转栅门). Once they’re finished, those shoppers will check out with an Amazon Go employee and receive a paper receipt. Cashless customers can still walk out by scanning a phone that has the Amazon Go app at the turnstiles. Customers using the Go app can exit without waiting and get a digitized receipt.
The 1,300-square-foot New York store-the first Amazon Go store on the East Coast-will offer prepared foods, such as sandwiches and salads, It will also have Amazon Meal Kits and locally made options.
Amazon says it will begin accepting cash at its other Go stores “over time.” A number of retailers (零售商) and restaurants, such as Sweetgreen and Dos Toros Taqueria, are facing roadblocks to their cashless recommendations.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy recently signed a law banning cashless stores in that state. Philadelphia also passed a law to prohibit cashless stores earlier this month, and officials in New York City, Washington and San Francisco are considering similar moves. The federal government does not require retailers to accept cash.
“While card-only may be convenient for some businesses, it can actually be discriminatory against poor communities that don’t have as much access to banks or lines of credit,” said New Jersey State Senator Nellie Pou, who sponsored the state’s new law. Not accepting cash could also be bad for business. Americans use it in 30% of all business deals, according to a 2017 report from the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.

“People think Curtis Bay is a dangerous place. It’s not. It’s just we’re surrounded by dangerous things,” says Taysia Thompson, 17.
Taysia, is one of the Free Your Voice members, a group of student activists fighting against a very different kind of danger in their neighborhood: air pollution and climate change. Now, the focus of their movement is the mountains of coal. Coal releases a fine, black dust small enough to get into people’s lungs. It makes respiratory (呼吸的) diseases worse, or can even cause disease and premature death. And there are the greenhouse gas emissions after the coal is burned.
The teens of Free Your Voice are taking on a big opponent: the massive goods transportation company CSX, which transported more than 8 million tons of coal through South Baltimore in 2021. The goal is to eventually get the state regulators to deny the permit that CSX needs to operate, or at least require the company to enclose all the coal, or at the very least put water onto all of it so there’s less dust blowing around.
This past summer, Taysia and three other students spent their time gathering evidence to try and get the coal pollution out of their neighborhood. They used sticky paper to gather samples of dust from all over the neighborhood to prove that the dust is from coal. They are also sending dust samples to a scientist in California, who uses an electron microscope to compare the dust that’s in this neighborhood to samples from the piles of coal at the terminal in South Baltimore to see if it matches.
The students now have support from their community. But the responses from officials have not been very satisfying. “Everyone is just breathing the air. And we will keep fighting.” says Taysia.

When we choose to recycle mobile phones and other such devices, it not only helps to conserve the valued resources within, but it also reduces greenhouse gas emissions that occur during manufacturing and processing.
The U. K. produces about 55 pounds of e-waste per person. Mary Creagh MP, Chair of the Environmental Audit, mentions that the household e-waste, which makes up a large number of cell phones, is piling up in a “tsunami of e-waste”.
Most Europeans change their cell phone every 18 to 24 months. The next time you have a new phone, don’t throw your old one anywhere or slide it into a drawer to gather dust. Either recycle it or if it still does its job well, consider donating it to a program that serves essential technology to low-income groups and individuals. There are also some recycling programs that work with community organizations and schools to collect unused cell phones as fundraising projects.
Apple accepts taking back the old iPhones to recycle and reuse them through its Renew pro-gram. In 2015, Apple recycled 90 million pounds of electronic waste. The composition thus recovered includes 23 million pounds of steel, 13 million pounds of plastic, and nearly 12 million pounds of glass. There were some high-value recovered materials too—2.9 million pounds of copper (铜), 6.6 pounds of silver, and 2.2 pounds of gold!
We live in threatening times when our planet is subject to risks that shouldn’t be ignored. With the decreasing metal reserves, the valuable metals inside cell phones are more precious than ever.
Let’s walk the talk and not just crawl when it comes to protecting our natural resources. Every human being on the planet has a responsibility to do their part in stopping e-waste by choosing to recycle mobile phones.
1. What can we know about e-waste from Mary Creagh MP’s statement?A.It is alarming in amount. | B.It is kept in people's houses. |
C.It is made up of cell phones. | D.It is mainly produced in the U. K. |

Bleaching in 2016, 2017 and 2020 damaged two-thirds of the coral in the reef. The environmental group Greenpeace Australia Pacific said in a statement the extent of the latest bleaching was “another complaint of the Morrison government which has failed to protect the reef and worsened the problem through its support of fossil fuels(化石燃料).”
Scientists hope most of the coral in the reef off Australia’s eastern coast will recover from the current event, said David Wachenfeld, chief scientist at the authority. ”The early indications are that the death won’t be very high, “Wachenfeld said Wednesday. ”We are hoping that we will see most of the bleaching coral recover. We will probably end up with an event more like 2020. In 2020, there was mass bleaching, but there were low deaths. However, the bleaching events in 2016 and 2017 led to quite high levels of coral mortality.
Coral is made up of tiny animals called polyps(息肉)that are fed by microscopic seaweed that live inside the reefs and are sensitive to changes in water temperatures. The seaweed provides the reefs with their colors and produce sugars that provide the coral with most of its nutrients. Rising ocean temperatures turn the chemicals that the seaweed produce into poison. The coral turns white as it effectively spits the poisonous seaweed out. So, coral bleaches as a heat stress response. Heat stress beyond a few weeks can lead the coral to die of hunger.
“This is heartbreaking. Our Barrier Reef really is in very serious trouble indeed. ”Simon Bradshaw, a researcher at the Climate Council, said, “the reef’s survival depended on global cutting down heat giving out within the decade.”
1. What can we infer from paragraph l?A.The use of fossil fuels reduced this bleaching. |
B.The latest bleaching is more serious than before. |
C.Bleaching occurred four times in the recent decade. |

It is parent’s job to make their kids become responsible adults and to prepare them for the real world and life as an adult.
Kids as young as toddlers (学走路的孩子) can be given small jobs to do and can help you around the house, in the garden, at the grocery store, etc. They can do little jobs like setting the table, helping to make the bed, washing dishes, washing the car and so on. When you let children do small jobs at a young age and make it fun, encourage, praise and thank them, it quickly becomes normal and a part of life. Kids who are given different responsibilities grow up with a much greater sense of self-worth, self-esteem and are more confident. As the children grow, their responsibilities grow and expand.
Doing everything for children or not allowing them to make mistakes and learn from them is not being a positive, responsible parent. The kids will more than likely end up with bad attitudes, and usually have no respect for their parents or other adults and at times have no respect for themselves. When your kids are ready to leave home, they should be responsible, capable and confident.
It is my opinion that parents arc to be thanked or to be blamed (责备) for just how kids take control of their lives. They are a product of their environment, mirroring what they have seen and what you have taught them. Parenting is the hardest job in the world and none of us are perfect, but it is our job!

I never believed in Internet friendship. Yes, I met people online. I had one very good friend from a forum (论坛); we were talking and then we just disappeared from each other’s lives. So I never thought that an Internet friend might be truly real.
Recently, I changed my mind. A few weeks ago I came back from St Petersburg, a city I don’t know at all, except for one girl who changed my understanding of friendship.
I met Dilyara on a FanFiction website. I found one of her stories, and really liked it so I commented (评论) on it. She liked my stories too. Then after a while of just reading them, we decided to exchange real names and started chatting on social media platforms (社交媒体平台).
In just 3 days we knew everything about each other. We just understood each other in seconds; we had the same interests, made the same jokes and shared common opinions and similar situations in our lives. In a week we couldn’t spend one day without texting each other. We were sending each other gifts and letters on birthdays, New Year, and other holidays. She helped me a lot on my bad days and I was also there for her. Although we have thousands of kilometres between us, it is the strongest friendship I have ever had.
Internet friendship is something really good. Victoria Lebed, a student from London, tells me she also believes in Internet friendship. She actually has a few online friends she is always happy to talk to. They share what is going on in their lives and give each other advice. But she says: “Yes, you always need to be careful, don’t send your bank details or share personal information or photos if you are unsure about someone’s identity.”

The man saw that the boy was very cute, and he wanted to give him a whole basket of fish. But the boy shook his head. The man was surprised and asked, “Why don’t you want the fish?”
The boy replied, “I want the fishing rod (竿) in your hands.”
The man asked, “Why do you want the rod?”
“I will eat up all the fish in the basket soon, but if I have the fishing rod, I can use it to catch a lot of fish by myself.”
Many people will certainly say the boy is very smart…wrong! If he doesn’t know fishing skills. He can’t catch fish without a fishing rod. It’s useless to only have a fishing rod, fishing skills are more important than having a fishing rod.
Many people want to have a “fishing rod” in their life. They are just like the boy, they thought that if they had a fishing rod, they would have fish to eat. Life is full of exciting things, we should try to learn fishing skills instead of having a fishing rod.
