【推荐1】“Good afternoon! Remember tomorrow is Crazy Day, so you are welcome to do anything crazy,” boomed a voice through our school speakers.

“Crazy Day? What does that mean?” I asked my ESL teacher, Mrs. Ramsey. She answered, “On this day, everyone dresses up like a crazy person.” She suggested I make a strange hairstyle or wear two different shoes. However, I decided that I would wear my T-shirt backwards.

The next day as I walked into the classroom, everybody looked so funny: Mrs. Toalson had curled her hair into large curls and my classmate Bradley had coloured his hair white! I thought he was an old person when I first saw him.

“Hi, Jim, you look weird! How do I look?” My friend Taylor asked. She was wearing an old hat that looked like it came from the 17th century paired with a cute and trendy skirt. It reminded me of women from ancient times mixed with a 21st century woman who chewed gumduring school.

The next day, I received a note from school that said “Tomorrow is Pajama (睡衣) Day.” “Should I wear my pajamas to school tomorrow? What if tomorrow is not Pajama Day? What if the note is just a joke?” I worried. “What if tomorrow I am the only one wearing pajamas? I will look silly and strange!” I decided to be safe and not wear my pajamas.

As I walked into the classroom the following day, I was amazed how my classmates were dressed! They were all wearing pajamas! Some of them even brought their dolls and Barbies with them! I deeply regretted not wearing my pajamas.

【推荐2】There are many customs and traditions connected to yearly celebrations which are part of Britain’s folklore (民俗). Lughnasadh is a celebration at the beginning of August.     1     The doll is saved until the following spring when it is put back into the earth with new seeds. People believe that the doll contains the spirit of the corn and will bring a good harvest. Christmas too is full of ancient customs. The traditions of lighting a fire and decorating the home with an evergreen have their roots in times. The fire is to keep away evil spirits and fill the home with light and the evergreen is valued because it is a sign that life continued during those cold, dark days.

2     The roots of Morris dancing, for example, are not known. This is a dance in which men(and sometimes women)dressed in white dance together. Some people think the dance may be from pre-Christmas times, and others say it was introduced into Britain in the late 15th century and that it comes from Moorish dancing. In any case, it is interesting to see that Morris dancing is not a dying tradition.     3

Although these customs have been passed down to us from forgotten generations, they themselves have not been forgotten and continue to play a part in our modern lives.     4     This month people all over Britain shall be preparing their homes for the ancient celebration we now call Christmas, lighting fires and putting up Christmas trees, just as their great-great-grandfathers once did.

A.Most families observe with a large meal and sometimes a religious service.
B.There are Morris dancing groups in places as far away as New Zealand and San Francisco!
C.It is a holiday rooted in the belief that the world is spiritually connected to heaven.
D.Not all the origins of ancient traditions are remembered, however.
E.Every week groups of individuals regularly meet to sing, play instruments or practice ancient dances.
F.A custom connected with it is to make corn dolls with corn from the last of the harvest.

【推荐3】Learn How to Have a Learning Vacation

Going on a vacation to learn a skill you have long hungered to pick up sounds like a good thing, but be careful, said John Spence, the president of a travel company in Calif. “If you don’t pick the right skill for you, or go in without realistic expectations, your time won’t enjoyable,” he said.

Here, he shares his advice on planning a learning vacation that you won’t regret taking:

◆Follow your passion.    1    . They include cooking, photography, art history, farming or a sport such as diving or horseback riding. To get the most out of the trip, choose something you’re passionate about.

2    ? With whatever skill you intend to learn, figure out whether you want an immersion (沉浸) or only to occupy a part of your trip. It’s possible to learn cooking basics, for example, by taking a weeklong course at Ballymaloe Cookery School in Ireland. Another choice is to attend several half-day classes at the school and have more free time to explore the destination itself. “    3    , so make sure that it’s what you really want,” Mr. Spence said.

◆Consider your budget. No matter the skill, you can learn it by taking a vacation in a wide range of price choices.    4    . If you want to learn scuba diving (水肺式潜水), for example, heading to the Maldives will cost several thousand dollars per person, while a scuba diving trip to the Florida Keys is a more wallet-friendly choice.

◆Don’t forget the children.    5    , if they are fun. “ Yes, you want your kids to learn, but you don’t want them to be bored by overloading them with too much information,” Mr. Spence said.

A.A little, or a lot
B.Don’t be influenced by others’ interest
C.What skill do you want to learn
D.Learning vacations can be great family trips, too
E.The choices for what you can learn on your vacation are limitless
F.Having a clear idea of your budget will help you home in on the right trip
G.Spending your entire break learning something new can be stressful
