Years ago while lying in my hammock(吊床)and drinking JD from the bottle, I noticed my dog dragging something under the fence. Upon inspection, to my disappointment, I realized it was the next door neighbor’s 10 – year – old daughter’s rabbit. For years I had watched her come home from school and head straight out to its cage, free it and play with it in the yard. I knew that day would be no different and fearing for our dog, I had to think fast.
The rabbit was quite dirty, as if it had put up quite a struggle, so I washed it, combed it with the dog brush and blew it dry with the leaf blower. Upon finishing its grooming I jumped the fence and replaced it back in its cage hoping its death would be written off as “natural caused”.
Back to the hammock and JD. Within the hour the neighbor’s Volvo pulled in as usual and out popped the little girl, and as usual she headed straight for the cage. Only this time she stopped about six feet away and screamed: “D—A—D—D—Y!!!”.
Her father, panic stricken, stood looking at the cage. Being the good neighbor that I am, I rushed to fence and asked if there was anything I could do.
Her father less than calmly shouted, “What kind of sick individual would dig up a little girl’s rabbit and put it back in its cage?”
1. The girl was shocked because           .
A.the rabbit was killed by someone
B.the rabbit was too clean
C.the dead rabbit was cleaned and put back into the cage

2. That day the girl ran to the cage           .
A.because her rabbit was there
B.because she had a habit of going there to see her rabbit
C.because she wanted to see her rabbit again
D.because the rabbit was dead

B.was already dead before the writer saw his dog dragging it
C.was in the cage playing with the dog
D.was at the fence seeking out for food before it was killed by the dog

【推荐1】My 86-year-old Mom moved to live closer to us. My husband, Kevin, and I found a lovely apartment for her. The day after Mom moved in, she called me to complain about the food at the facility.

Kevin and I took Mom to a nice restaurant for Mother’s Day. On the way back to her place, Mom commented that the restaurant had their air conditioner turned up too high—she nearly froze to death.

I asked Kevin whether I was always complaining. He hesitated for a few seconds before speaking, but he stared out of the window. I realized that the family tradition of complaining had taken root in me as well. Kevin had never mentioned it. But it wasn’t his characteristic to shine a light on my faults. I decided to keep a better watch on my tongue. However, every time the phone rang and Mom’s voice was on the other end, I felt extremely nervous.

Mom seemed ungrateful. After whatever Kevin and I had done for her, all we heard was what she disliked. I talked about how Mom’s attitude annoyed me with my best friend Tory. With the words coming out from my lips, an uneasy feeling settled in my stomach.

A few days later, I received a package from Tory. A bright orange journal with one capital word in gold on its cover: GRATITUDE.

The next morning, I opened the journal and wrote the date, then the things I was grateful for. Over the next few months, I continued to list blessings (幸事、福祉) each day. Looking for things to thank for led to a deeper in me.

Life didn’t suddenly become trouble-free, but a new awareness of the blessings around me changed all these in my life including my Mom. I couldn’t change her, but I could only love her.

【推荐2】My granddaughter entertains herself outside a closed shop. I have no idea what day it is - I haven’t known for 10 months. I have moved to a different city to provide child care so that my daughter can work.

Everything I observe these days is from a young child’s eye view. I must be experiencing time and place in a way I haven’t done before. I have let go of all the experiences we’re missing because I’m focused on what matters to this child at any given moment. Puddles (水洼), obviously. Rocks held lovingly in her small fist the whole way home. Burying balls that have sailed over the tennis court fence and landed in the sandbox, and her face lighting up when they are dug up. Every single time.

My job is to wait and watch. Let her try things, comfort her when she falls down, and keep her safe. Bring snacks, push her on a swing, but mostly let her be. Tell her the names of all the things she points to. Take her hand when she offers it because she is in a slightly unfamiliar area. The two of us never hurry. This lifestyle change astonishes me every day.

Who knows how her new brain processes all this? I have been forced by circumstance into the arms of the people I need to take care of me. Taking care of my granddaughter is a front. In fact, she gave me much more.

In March 2020, I lost my younger daughter. I can’t say it was entirely unexpected. My younger daughter battled mental illness. She was only 27 years old. She put herself through long treatment programs to reduce her pain. It was as if the whole world went on leave with me. I had company for a few brief days after my younger daughter’s death, and then I was alone. I signed up for the various things that might reduce my suffering. I went 15 weeks without touching another person.

Now a very small girl waits for me, watches me, comforts me, keeps me safe, and takes my hand.

【推荐3】Love your parents

Even if you think that your parents are mean-spirited at times, loving your parents is a normal and fulfilling (满意的)part of life. You love them for the fact that they created you, raised you, and are in part a source of who you are. Here are some ways to love your parents.

1     A gentle "good morning" and "I love you" will warm a coldest heart. Remember that they brought you into this world. Without your parents, you might sill wander at an unknown corner in an unknown world.

Respect them more and cherish(珍惜)these moments. You can use these moments to learn from them when you're off on your own. It's OK to get angry but angry actions don't help you or your parents. Act calmly, cool off, journal about your feelings, or talk to a friend.     2

Obey their requests. It will make your attitude better and earn you more respect from them. It may seem like you are going through hell when you don't get what you want or you have to clean. However, you had better remember they keep a roof over your head when it's cold, raining, snowing, or too hot. Understand that parents are human beings and make mistakes.     3     Since you can forgive your friends, why not forgive your parents?

Keep company with them. Do things with your parents like watching TV, or go somewhere with them.       4     Listen to their old stories and learn from them. You will find they are your teachers in this way or another.

Some people simply may not be able to love their parents. .    5     Look for help if you are being abused violently. Parents do not have a right to harm you.

A.There can be realistic reasons for this, family violence for example.
B.Anyway, spend as much time with them as you can.
C.Tell them you love them every morning.
D.Forgiveness is the key.
E.Parents will turn express their love to you.
