Can you imagine what 680,000 tons of food look like? That’s the amount of food wasted in Britain each year, and at the top of the list of wasted food is bread. In the British diet, bread appears in every meal. It is eaten for breakfast, used for sandwiches for lunch and put in soups at dinner. Almost everyone in Britain buys bread.
Bread is so important to the British that they use the word “bread” to mean “money” and the word “loaf” to mean “head”. So let’s use our “loaves” to understand why so much “bread” is wasted!
Even though bread is still sold in such a popular way and in such a large amount, that doesn’t mean it’s made full use of. It seems people are simply buying much more than they need, so they throw away the bread that they don’t need.
Baker Chris Young explains that the British aren’t valuing their bread because bread is no longer respected. “None of the bread that is thrown away is ‘real’ bread—homemade or carefully-made bread, but is bought from the bread shop.”
Another baker Mark Boyle agrees. “If you make something by yourself, you don’t want to waste it because you know how much energy you’ve put into it. But although home baking is a nice idea, for many it’s out of their ability because they have to work such long hours every day that they don’t have time to make bread by themselves at home. So they simply buy bread and just bring it home to eat.”
Perhaps the British should try to bake bread by themselves, which can probably make their dustbins lighter.

“We call our cookbook culinary genealogy (烹饪家谱). We wanted the book to be our family’s stories told through food, rather than just characteristic recipes,” said Sarah Leung, who co-wrote the book during the pandemic (流行病) with her parents and younger sister. “We grew up in a food-obsessed (着迷的) family. Honestly, I’ve developed a quarter of these recipes myself,” Sarah added. “Over time, we’ll accomplish our goal: All family members are competent Chinese cooks.”
The cookbook features dishes which might be made in a Chinese American home as well as in Chinese American takeout restaurants. “Home-style cooking and restaurant-style cooking have equal importance, but they are different,” Sarah said, adding that the family also discussed how to be respectful of each point. “I hope the recipes will appeal to Chinese Americans, like my family, and also those less familiar with Chinese cooking.”
Part of their cookbook has also been posted on their website, attracting millions of faithful followers. The success of the cookbook is that it honors tradition as well as reflects modern interpretations, making it a mixture of the old and the new. It also offers building blocks for home cooks who want to learn to cook Chinese food.
I started my exploration with the Kung Pao Chicken, a popular dish and also my favorite. Joyfully, the dish I made tasted like it was supposed to be. It really built up my confidence. Surely, as you can imagine, I have also set up my goal to be expert in Chinese cooking.
The cookbook is promoting Chinese cooking to become the domain of home cooks in the United States. For too long, Chinese cooking has been a cuisine that many people are used to only eating out.

“The latest data tells us that more and more social networking is becoming a part of everyday life for Americans 50 plus,” said Kevin Donnellan, the chief communications officer at AARP, which released the report.

With them come a group of terms that are foreign to the French language. For some French-language purists, it’s too much to bear to rely on English to praise surfers on their “nose riding”—standing on the front of the board. They’ve decided they need a French solution.
The French government has created a team of language experts devoted to promoting the national language. They will meet periodically over the next couple of years to identify and define new sports terms. The French battle against the influence of other languages isn’t new. In 1994, the Toubon law was passed, forcing the use of French in all government publications, contracts and advertisements. Yet it contained several loopholes(漏洞), which allow brands and companies to extensively use English. As a result, anglicisms(从英语中借用的词) are becoming more obvious.
Julie Neveux, linguistics(语言学) professor at Sorbonne University in Paris, said anglicisms are “sometimes estimated at just under 5% of the present vocabulary, but they are disturbing because they show that we follow an economic and cultural model other than our own.” They are particularly present in sports competitions and events, during which athletes from around the world are used to communicating in English. “Sport was one of the first areas to be globalized,” said sports historian Michael Attali. “This phenomenon has strengthened English as the official language.”
Despite their best efforts, no committee has successfully prevented English from infiltrating(渗透) everyday language. By the time French officials agreed on a translation and its definition, the English version has already spread throughout the nation. “Similar committees have been put in place in the past, but nothing has changed so far,” said Attali.
“There are far fewer anglicisms in French than there are French words in English,” said Neveux, adding these exchanges should not be seen as a threat. “All living languages exist by borrowing from each other. Languages only exist thanks to their impurity.”
1. What will a team of language experts do?A.Make French much purer. |
B.Bring English and French together. |
C.Decide upon some new sports terms. |
D.Promote the spread of French in the world. |
A.English words. | B.French words. |

A.Successful. | B.Fruitless. |
C.Unmentioned. | D.Unimportant. |
A.All languages should be preserved. |
B.English is more popular than French. |

D.The exchanges between two languages can be avoided. |
Will My Donation Actually Help?
When we donate money to one of the countless charities, we give it to an unknown person over the phone or through the Internet. We have absolutely no idea about where that money goes to, what it buys or who it helps. At least that is the case for most of the charities. Perhaps you should start to take a greater interest in where your donations go, because many of them may lead to dead ends.
You really should ask the question: will my donation actually help the people? Sometimes it makes matter worse. For example, many charities help African people set up water pumps (水泵) to deliver clean water to their communities. Money has been invested over the past 20 years to set up a total of 60,000 pumps across sub-Saharan Africa. However, today 40% of those have failed to work at some point. Because the community does not have the resources or know how to fix the problem, they have been left there, like expensive but useless decorations.
For underdeveloped nations, sending endless containers full of material goods from charity will hurt the local economy. For instance, Hand-Me-Down charities and others will ship used clothes and other goods to Africa. Kenya alone receives more than 100.000 tons of clothes from Global Charities each year. The problem is that these mountains of imported clothes have completely destroyed local textile (纺织品) industries, which have previously supported local economies. In the 1980s, 500,000 people were employed by Kenya’s textile industry. Today the number falls to less than 20.000.
Basically, to whom and how much you give is your choice. But it is important to provide highly specialized services instead of material goods. In general, the more your donation matches the need of the receivers, the better it will be for the long-term growth of those you want to help.
1. Why do the water pumps across sub-Saharan Africa become useless?2. What advice does the author give in the last paragraph?
3. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
The economy in Kenya becomes better because of the imported clothes from Global Charities.
4. In your daily life, what will you do to make your donation really helpful? (In about 40 words)

The researchers did a small study. They tested 18 young people who had good sleep after a sleepless night. The participants watched videos of people with neutral (无倾向性的) expressions walking towards them. When the person or the video got too “close” to them, they pushed a button to stop the video.
The participants kept the person at a distance of 60% further if they hadn’t got enough sleep. They felt that their personal space was being invaded (侵占). But when the participants got a good night’s sleep, they allowed the person to get much closer to them.
The result shows that the less sleep you get, the less you want to socialize with others. In turn, other people may think you are strange and stay away from you. So if you want to be a more sociable (喜欢与人交往的) and popular person, sleeping well might help.
