When you go to a grocery store, you expect to pay for your goods with money. But students at a high school in Texas, US, opened a store that runs on good deeds.

In November, students from Linda Tutt High School in the city of Sanger launched a grocery store that enables students to purchase necessities such as toilet paper, meat and basic food items using a point system. The store aims to support families in need.

“In our school district, there are roughly 2,750 students enrolled and throughout the district, 43 percent of these students are considered economically disadvantaged,” Anthony Love, principal of Linda Tutt, told CNN. “About 3.6 percent of our students are considered homeless. We thought it was important to support them and their families and make sure they had food on the table.”

Students earn points by contributing positively to the school. For those students from poor families, the point system has provided a way for them to shop for their families, according to Love. “They can earn points for doing chores(杂活)around the building or helping to clean,” he said.

With the help of partners like Texas Health, Albertsons and First Refuge Ministries, the school was able to stock the shelves.

The number of points for each item was actually assigned by the students. “So we walked through here and decided that a can of green beans was one point,” said Paul Juarez, the executive director of First Refuge Ministries.

Juarez hopes the idea can get implemented(实施)in other areas. “It gives us a picture of what can be. So if we can do this inside other schools, it will do a whole lot to help other small towns.”

In addition to the financial benefits, students also learn about supply management and customer service, and such lessons could prepare them for future jobs.

The grocery store's student manager, Hunter Weertman, says he has already learned important life skills from his experience at the store, such as making good spending choices and budgeting(安排开支).

The store practice was also welcomed by Thomas Muir, Sanger's mayor(市长). “We all had our first jobs and it taught us how to work, and what you got from your work,” he said. “I think this will do that for them too, and also meet an immediate need.”

Each day water related, diseases kill 3,900 of the world’s children.

Across the world, 1.1 billion people have no access to clean drinking water. More than 2.5 billion people lack basic sanitation (卫生设备).

The combination proves deadly. Each year, diseases related to inadequate water and sanitation kill between 2 and 5 million people and cause an estimated 80 percent of all sicknesses in the developing world. Safe drinking water is a precondition for health and the fight against child death rate, inequality between men and women, and poverty.

Consider these fact:

a)The average distance that women in Africa and Asia walk to collect water is 6 kilometers.

b)Only 58 percent of children in sub-Saharan Africa are drinking safe water, and only 37 percent of children in South Asia have access to even a basic toilet.

c)Each year in India alone, 73 million working days are lost to water-borne diseases.

Here are three ways you can help:

1) Write Congress

Current U.S. foreign aid for drinking water and sanitation budgets only one dollar per year per American citizen. Few members of Congress have ever received a letter for voters about clean drinking water abroad.

2) Sponsor a project with a faith—based organization

Many U.S. religious groups already sponsor water and sanitation projects, working with partner organizations abroad. Simply put a single project by a U.S. organization can make safe water a reality for thousands of people.

3) Support nonprofit water organizations

Numerous U.S.---based nonprofits work skillfully abroad in community---led projects related to drinking water and sanitation. Like the sample of non-profits noted as follows, some organizations are large, other small-scale, some operate worldwide, others are devoted to certain areas in Africa, Asia, or Latin America. Support them generously.

1. The three facts presented in the passage are used to state that ______.
A.poverty can result in water-borne diseases
B.people have no access to clean drinking water
C.women’s rights are denied in some developing countries
D.safe drinking water should be an essential concern
2. The intended readers of the passage are ______.
A.overseas sponsorsB.Americans
C.CongressmenD.U.S.---based water organizations
3. The main purpose of the passage is to call on people to _____.
A.get rid of water-related diseases in developing countries
B.donate money to people short of water through religious groups
C.fight against the worldwide water shortage and sanitation problem
D.take joint action in support of some nonprofit water organizations

【推荐3】At first glance, 15-year-old Kenan Pala seems like a typical teenager, playing video games with his friends, but he also loves finance and economics and invests in the stock (股票) market. He founded Kids4Community, a nonprofit offering volunteer projects for kids, when he was just 12.

The idea came out of his family’s experience. Pala’s parents came to the U.S. from Turkey in 1998 and founded a company. “We started very little here,” said Pala’s mother. “But for the help we got along the way, we wouldn’t have been where we are.” The Palas wanted their children to live by this lesson, so they encouraged them to give back to the community.

Anyone can donate with Kids4Community, but its events are intended for kids. Pala’s organization aims to boost young people’s involvement in community efforts because many organizations don’t let children volunteer.

Last month, Kids4Community volunteers made 2,000 hygiene kits containing shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other supplies. Kids4Community organizes the event annually and distributes the kits to the needy through Christmas Day. In fall, the group’s efforts are focused on disaster victims. Over the years, it has made care packages for survivors of earthquakes and Hurricanes.

Another key focus is homelessness — an issue that has taken on particular significance. Years ago, Pala was jogging along the beach when he came across a sickly baby seal (海豹), surrounded by people who were caring for it and calling for help. “Hours later, I saw a homeless person, also sick and needing help, but people were just ignoring him,” Pala said. Now, Kids4Community organizes initiatives both to meet physical needs of the homeless and give them a sense of dignity and hope.

In the coming years, Pala wants to expand Kids4Community’s reach beyond San Diego and perhaps beyond California.

1. What does the Pala family lesson convey?
A.Responsibility.B.Forgiveness.C.Gratitude.D.Struggle.
2. What does Kids4Community mainly work on in autumn?
A.Disaster relief.B.Supplies delivery.
C.Disaster forecast.D.Supplies production.
3. Why is Pala’s experience with the seal mentioned?
A.To advocate wildlife conservation.B.To launch the initiatives for the homeless.
C.To praise the warm-hearted people.D.To account for his attention to homelessness.
4. Which of the following best describes Pala?
A.Disciplined and reliable.B.Committed and consistent.
C.Insightful and intelligent.D.Public-spirited and enterprising.
