Maybe there is a Father Christmas!

Anna stood anxiously staring at the pouring rain while little Molly looked up at a pretty doll in the window of the toy shop on the edge of town. "Mummy, "Molly said, "that's the doll I would like Father Christmas to bring me." A tear rolled down Anna's cheek and she knew it would be impossible this year. They were supposed to start a new life in Spain one and a half years ago before her husband Tim was cruelly taken from them by a car. Their small amount of savings were quickly spent on Tim’s funeral costs and necessities, leaving her in heavy debt.

To her relief, the local people had helped to support her through these difficult times and especially Juan, owner of the local grocery store, a single man, who would often put something special into her shopping bag, even though he himself had been going through a difficult period — his mother died of cancer and he was busy handling the sale of his mother’s house on the edge of town.

As the rain stopped, Anna and Molly started walking home. She was thinking about buying an umbrella after paying the rent with her upcoming wage when Molly shouted excitedly, "Mummy, what’s that on the road?" Anna looked down and saw a bag lying in the water, which was obviously lost because of the sudden rain.

They got home and dried themselves before Anna focused on the bag. Opening it and seeing bundles of money inside, she stood back in shock and cried, "Is this a present from kindness? I can pay off my debt, buy Molly’s favorite doll and my new umbrella ...” Then reality set in, Anna was a very moral person and would never steal even the slightest little thing, let alone bundles of money. She went to bed with all thoughts in her mind.

There was a time in my life twenty years ago when I was driving a taxi to earn a living. I encountered people whose lives amazed me, made me laugh and made me weep. But none of those lives touched me more than that of a woman I picked up late on a warm August night.

That night, I was called at 2:00 am to pick someone up. When I arrived, the building was completely dark except for one light in a window. In this case, many other drivers would just honk (按喇叭) once or twice, wait a short minute, then drive away.

But I always went to the door to find the passenger. It might, I reasoned, be someone who needed my assistance. I walked to the door and knocked. “Just a minute,” answered a weak and elderly voice. After a long wait, the door opened. A small woman in her 80s stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.

“Would you carry my bag out to the car?” she said. I took her suitcase and gave her my arm. We walked slowly to the street. She kept thanking me for my kindness.

“It’s nothing,” I told her. “I try to treat my passengers how I want my mother treated.”

“You’re such a good boy,” she said. When we got in the taxi, she gave me an address. Then she asked, “Could you drive through the downtown?”

“It’s not the shortest way,” I answered.

“I don’t mind,” she said. “I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice (临终安养院).” I saw her eyes shining with tears.

“I don’t have any family left, she continued. “The doctor says I should go there. He says I don’t have very long.”

I quietly turned off the meter (计程器). “What road do you want me to take?” I asked.

Reflections of Hope in the Snowstorm

I was homesick. My husband, Keith, was attending Utah State University in Logan, Utah. We lived eight hundred miles away from my parents and family in California. We couldn’t afford to go home for Christmas. We would just stay home in Hyrum.

Then a most unexpected gift arrived in a Christmas card: enough money for gas for the eight- hundred-mile drive home. We were so excited. Keith took time off from his part-time job and we packed the car. We prayed for safety and good traveling conditions.

We drove all day to the west coast of California. Everything went well and we finally drove up the familiar driveway, honking(按喇叭)the horn to signal our arrival. My family rushed out to greet us, welcoming us with love and Christmas cheer. We celebrated Christmas in my childhood home, all of us together again for the first time in three years. All too soon. the time came for us to return to Utah. My parents gave us some money for gas. With tears and hugs. we started on our way. Hoping to make good time. we drove steadily through the day.

Toward evening, snow flurries swirled (盘旋飞舞)around the car. We stopped just long enough to fuel up the car. With no credit card and very little cash, we did not even consider staying overnight in a motel.

If the road and weather conditions were good. we had about two hours of driving to get to Salt Lake City, where we could just make it to Keith’s parents’ home that night for a rest. Then we could go on to Hyrum in the morning, and he would make it to work on time. We drove into the darkening night. Snow swirled wildly about the car. Keith was having trouble seeing the road, as the headlights seemed dim. He pulled over, and got out to brush the snow away from them.

A man named Bryan was driving home one evening, on a town country road. It was difficult to find a job in this small town. But he never quit looking. Ever since the factory closed, he’d been unemployed, and with winter coming, the chill (寒冷) had finally hit home.

It was a lonely road. Not very many people had a reason to be on it, unless they were leaving. Most of his friends had already left. But he stayed on.

It was starting to get dark and light snow was coming down. He almost didn’t see the old lady on the other side of the road. But he could see she needed help. He pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out. He went out to her. Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so.

“I'm here to help you ma'am. Why don't you wait in the car where it’s warm? By the way, my name is Bryan.” Well, all she had was a flat tire (轮胎爆胎), but for an old lady, that was bad enough.

She couldn’t thank him enough for coming to her aid. She asked him how much she owed him. Bryan never thought twice about the money. This was not a job to him. This was helping someone in need, and God knows there were plenty who had given him a hand in the past. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give the person some help. He started the car and drove off, thinking of his pregnant wife working as a waitress.
