As the MOOC craze continues to explode, anyone interested in taking an online course faces a tricky question: Which course to take? Here are five aspects that you should consider before you start.
(1)What is your learning style?
Many MOOCs are video-based. Other courses use presentation formats. Some also require participation in group work. If you want to stay motivated during your course, think about how you enjoy learning.
Are you a visual learner, preferring to use images to understand a topic? If so, a video-based course will work well for you. If you are a verbal learner who gains new information by speaking and writing, try a text-based course with lots of note-taking. Social learners, meanwhile, will thrive in forum discussions and project-based assessment.
(2)Are you ready to become a full-time student?
Be realistic about the time that you can commit to your online studies. Participating in an online course can take as much time and commitment as a class-based program. Check the course requirements and make a plan around your current schedule.
(3) Does the course really meet your needs?
Whether you are interested in a professional qualification or want to take a personal development course like yoga, there is a MOOC for you. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of taking lots of free courses in everything that you ever wanted to learn. Before you start a course, think about the end goal. Is the course aimed at beginners or advanced learners? Why do you need this qualification?
(4) Do you need a support group?
Some people learn best from seeing how others approach the problem. If you are such as learner, you will need to supplement your online lessons with an in-person support group.
(5) What kind of certification will you get?
Take time to find out what kind of certification is available upon completion of the course, and how you can prove your learning to others - for example, certificates, transcripts or digital badges.
1. What kind of MOOC's does the author recommend to verbal learners?A.A video-based course. | B.A text-based course. |
C.A forum-based discussion. | D.A project-based assessment. |
A.Learners who prefer individual work. |
B.Learners who are in great need of a certificate. |
C.Learners who are too busy to become a full-time student. |

【推荐1】Last summer, the story about a CEO who encouraged employees to take mental health days spread online. It led to many media stories about the importance of taking care of your mental health including taking a mental health day when you need one.
But what about kids? Should you let your child take a mental health day from school? The answer isn’t a simple yes or no. It’s important for kids to power through some discomfort, like going to school even when they’re afraid of giving a presentation, or when they don’t have their math homework done. There’s a lot of value in showing them that they’re stronger than they think. But when they’re feeling so bad that they’re struggling to function, and going to school is likely to make it worse, a mental health day might be just what the doctor ordered.
Letting kids take the occasional(偶尔的) mental health day-maybe once or twice a year-could make them believe that taking care of their minds is vital, just as they should take care of their bodies. It can also be a great opportunity to help them sharpen their emotional skills and build the mental muscles they need to stay strong.
A good way to spend a mental health day is to use the time to do the following things.
Solve a problem. If your child is stressed out by a specific problem, you might be able to turn a mental health day into a problem-solving opportunity.
Practice self-care. If your child is exhausted or overworked, an occasional day off may help him recuperate. It could be an opportunity to develop healthier habits, like going to sleep earlier, eating nutritious (有营养的)food, and getting plenty of exercise.
See a professional. If your child is struggling to attend school, seek professional help. Schedule an appointment with your pediatrician(儿科医生)to talk about your child’s mental health needs. A physician may refer you to a mental health professional if it’s necessary.

【推荐2】If you’re lucky enough to travel or live abroad, in order to get the most out of your stay it’s necessary to mix with the locals.
Say yes to everything (within reason). Obviously, if you feel unsafe or uncomfortable in any way, don’t feel forced to agree to do anything. However, don’t put off trying anything new or going to anywhere you’ve never been before.
Another option is to attend language exchanges or find a friend to practise with.
Don’t be a wallflower. When you are miles away from home, surrounded by people speaking an unfamiliar language and immersed (浸没于) in a foreign culture, it may feel very difficult to be confident and involve yourself in conversations, especially with large groups of people.

Learn a language to make new friends. There are few things more fun than being able to speak another language. For more fun, first choose a language you’ve always been interested in learning.
Take a cooking course to learn culinary (烹饪) skills.
Take arts and crafts (手工) classes to feel more creative. Local parks and recreation departments usually publish a list of their summer arts and crafts classes for teens. Library branches, craft stores and local businesses sometimes offer arts and crafts classes for teens during the summer, too. The great thing about arts and crafts classes is that they’re inexpensive.

【推荐1】Too often, career choices are based on salaries or earning potential. But will choosing a career based on this standard determine your success? How can you ensure you’ll like what you are doing?
Be true to your motivators (动力). Career Anchors: Self-Assessment, developed by Edgar H. Schein, a professor at MIT’s Sloan School of Management, is one tool aimed to help you assess your ability, motives and values related to your work choices. There are some motivators to help you better understand what is important in your career. By the way, money is not one of the motivators.
Passion. Passion cannot be ignored. When asked what contributes to their success, successful professionals will likely answer that they love what they do. Eric Stutzke, executive vice president of Finance Operations at OneWire, a career site for finance professionals, says those who truly love the financial world will easily adapt and succeed.
Company culture and people. Once you have discovered a career, begin looking at the company culture and people who work in that area. While the job might fit, some company cultures may not line up with what is important to you. The best way to get this information is to speak with people who presently work for the company or recently worked there.
Learn by doing. All your research can help direct you in the correct direction, but sometimes experience is the best teacher. A temporary job can give you hands-on experience that can go a long way in helping you make the right choice. If you don’t like the job, it’s better to know this sooner rather than later. Don’t rule it out altogether, because your experience may not have been typical. Ask trusted advisors or friends to help you assess the situation before removing some of your options(选择).
1. Who is the book Career Anchors: Self-Assessment intended for?A.People wanting to become more competitive. | B.People wanting to make more money. |

【推荐2】In early twentieth-century France, a new form of entertainment was becoming a hit— motion picture. People crowded into theatres for short, silent, black-and-white films that showed everyday happenings, such as a train pulling into a station. These pictures were dimly projected onto white sheets. Usually, there was no sound. Sometimes, men at pianos played music to match the scenes.
Moving images in theatres are no longer new, but back at the beginning of the art form, surprises lurked around every corner. During the first showings of basic silent movies, some people in the audience screamed in fear, reacting to what they saw as if it were happening in real life. Moviegoers were known to leap out of the way of trains on the screen. At that time, few people understood what motion pictures were, so audience members could easily be fooled.
Today, people crowd into theatres for the latest 3D movies. Even older movies, such as the popular Star Wars series, are being re-released in 3D. Moviemakers are excited about the ability to involve the audience more directly in the story or film. In addition, theatres spend tens of thousands of dollars on high-quality audio systems so that everything from the safest whispers to the largest explosions sounds clear and realistic.
What will movies be like 100 years from now? Will audiences be able to smell scents in the films, taste the food that characters are eating, or even becoming part of the stories themselves? Only time will tell.
1. What does the underlined word “hit” in paragraph 1 probably mean?A.A heavy blow. | B.A crowded place. |
C.Something very popular. | D.Something very touching. |

C.how scary movies from the past were | D.how unfamiliar movies were to viewers then |

A.To explain how realistic movies are today. |
B.To tell something about future movie plans. |
