Superman, the first American superhero, appeared in 1938 with his cape (斗篷) and an “S” on his chest. Shortly after his appearance in comics, moviemakers began trying to bring superheroes to the big screen. In the early 1940s, they made their first attempts to bring comic books to life.    1    Instead, they were made as 5 to 10 minutes episodes that would play at movie theaters before the main feature. Unlike today’s superhero films, these serials were aimed mainly at children.

This pattern changed in 1978 when Richard Donner made his first Superman film. First of all, it was aimed at an adult audience.    2    Second, the film's special effects were very sophisticated(复杂的)for that time. Finally, the Superman film was a departure from earlier superhero films in that it used talented and famous Hollywood actors.     3

Yet another revolution in superhero movies came in the 1990’s and 2000’s, when Computer-Generated Image technology made it possible to recreate even more fantastic landscapes and more monstrous(可怕的)creatures.    4    These films were similar to Donners Superman in that they targeted an adult audience Watchmen (2009), for instance, was released with an R rating, meaning that it was not intended for children under the age of 17.

5    Their success at the box office continues to attract big-name Hollywood actors and directors and higher production budgets, so lovers of action and adventure should have plenty of reasons to go to the movies for years to come.

A.Richard Donner was born on April 24, 1930 in New York City.
B.Most of these early superhero films were not full-length movies.
C.The film had a complex plot, dealing with themes like love and politics.
D.As superhero movies are popular every year, it is clear this trend is far from over.
E.Many films used such technology to make their characters seem terrifyingly real.
F.Some of those stars were Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, and Gene Hackman.
G.The character of Superman was created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster.

【推荐1】Binge-watching is when a person watches more than one episode of a show in quick succession(一连串,连续)". With developments in the speed and connectivity of the internet, increases in technology and the rise of on-demand entertainment companies, people can now have their favorite shows streamed directly to their television at their convenience.

This behavior is nothing new. In fact, " binge-watching" has been officially listed in dictionaries since 2015. The entertainment companies recognize this behavior and many take steps to encourage it. Often, instead of releasing each episode on a week-by-week basis, an entire series will become available concurrently. Once the episode finishes many platforms will display pop-ups with “you might like suggestions, or will automatically play the next episode”.

However, recent research suggests that out of the more than half of British adults who watch more than one episode of a show back-to-back, almost a third have admitted missing sleep or becoming tired as a result; and one quarter have neglected their household chores. Next we’ll be missing work!

Bingeing has other connections-binge eating, binge drinking and binge smoking. All of them are often associated with a lack of control and a possible route to addiction. Lindsey Fussell, consumer group director, said: “The days of waiting a week for the next episode are largely gone, with people finding it hard to resist watching multiple episodes around the house or on the move.” If people find binge-watching hard to resist, coupled with the fact that it has shown to lead to negligence in many, are we witnessing the birth of a new type of addiction?

The countless of information and entertainment that television and online media can bring us is, many would say, a good thing. However, when the activity begins to bleed into other areas, causing us to stop functioning then it becomes a problem. So, what's the answer? Moderation! Neither a tiny amount, nor too much. After all, as the old proverb says, “A little of what you fancy does you good.”

【推荐2】Post-00s is a documentary about growing up. It covers almost every aspect of millennials’ experiences on their path toward adolescence ---their struggles with schoolwork, their relationship with peers, their confusion if a younger brother or sister is born into the family, and their growing desire to keep a distance from their parents. But this five-episode series was different from any other TV program with a similar theme.

Post-00s was filmed over a period of 10 years, during which the show’s makers followed a group of kids from when they were infants through to when they became teenagers. In other words, the show’s“characters”grow older for real, and their stories are all real.

“Coming-of-age”stories, as they’re known, have a special appeal. They satisfy our curiosity of looking at someone else’s life, and we become more and more attached to the characters as if we truly know them. And while we enjoy the truthfulness of the stories because nothing is set in advance, we also can’t help but feel the cruelty of reality. After all, there’s no re-writing of the script and there’s no turning back--- this is real life.

This realness can also be seen in Boyhood, a 2014 film that won the Silver Bear award for best director at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival. During a period of 12 years, the film follows the life of Mason Jr. --- played by US actor Ellar Coltrane --- from when he was 6 to when he finished high school.

One of Boyhood’s appeals comes from its “ordinariness”. Mason Jr isn’t some child genius... He is a quietly spoken, fairly typical American boy, growing up in the Texas suburbs. He likes riding his bike and playing video games.

While coming-of-age stories may look ordinary on the outside, they often allow us to look underneath the surface and see something extraordinary – the power of life itself.

1. In the documentary, we see post-00’s growing experience EXCEPT __________.
A.how they escape from their studies
B.how they get along with people of their age
C.how they help feel about their younger brothers or sisters
D.how much they long to be independent of their parents
2. Post-00 is different from other TV programs with a similar theme in that _____________.
A.it focuses on millennials’ life experience on their path towards adolescence
B.the stories of its main characters are real
C.It was filmed over a period of 10 years
D.It has five episodes
3. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A.Life is one big storyB.Actors are ordinary characters
C.Documentary is real lifeD.Post-00s are coming!

【推荐3】The movie Kites, which was released in May in more than 30 countries, is a love story of an Indian and a Mexican immigrant in the United States. Set in Las Vegas, it stars a popular Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan and Mexican actress Barbara Mori. Its producer, Rakesh Roshan, called it “a truly Indian global film”. Kites is the first effort by the Hindi film industry to make a movie which would interest audiences in India and in Western countries. However, the film failed to impress people on either side. Indians said they could not understand it well with the mix of Hindi, English and Spanish dialogues.

Bollywood_has_a_huge_fan_following,_not_only_in_India,_but_in_many_Asian_countries_such_as_Indonesia,_Sri_Lanka,_Pakistan_and_Afghanistan. It is also a huge hit with Indians in Western countries. About seven percent of the income of the $ 2 billion industry comes from overseas markets. The desire to attract Western audiences increased after the huge success of the Oscarwinning film Slumdog Millionaire.

Of course, a typical Hindi movie is very different to Slumdog Millionaire. It is usually a story of boymeetsgirl and the overcoming of all difficulties to be together. These films are filled with glitzy(浮华的) songanddance numbers.

Many people are optimistic that Bollywood movies can make their presence felt outside the traditional markets in India and Asia. Among them is Mumbaibased film critic Taran Adarsh.

“That is what has attracted a lot of people from the Western world... our colors, our songs, our dances, the Bollywood type,” Adarsh says. “I have had a lot of people coming up to me and telling me that they love Bollywood films. They don't understand the language, but there is something about Bollywood films. They find it very interesting.”

In order to win international audiences, Indian film producers are trying to explore more themes.

1. The Hindi film industry hoped Kites would ________.
A.mainly attract Asian people's attention
B.become as successful as Slumdog Millionaire
C.change people's attitudes towards Indian films
D.attract audiences in both India and Western countries
2. What can we learn from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2?
A.Bollywood movies have their special themes.
B.Bollywood movies are popular in many countries.
C.Bollywood movies are more popular outside India.
D.Asian people try to know India mainly through its films.
3. Which of the following statements about Slumdog Millionaire is probably WRONG?
A.It is an Oscarwinning film.
B.It is mainly a boymeetsgirl movie.
C.It is very popular with Western audiences.
D.It is different from traditional Hindi movies.
4. Taran Adarsh thinks that Bollywood movies ________.
A.don't have anything special
B.have too many glitzy songs and dances
C.are not good enough to attract people outside India
D.will successfully attract Western audiences one day
