JANE GOODALL has achieved an incredible amount in her life. At the age of 26, she began to watch chimps(黑猩猩) in the wild. Years of much patience has paid off. As a researcher, she has changed our understanding of chimps—highly intelligent animals with unique cultures and tight family bonds. As a conservationist, she has encouraged generations of activists.
A new documentary, Jane Goodall: The Hope, features footage spanning more than seven decades, including her early chimp work. The film picks up where the 2017 documentary Jane ended, focusing more on Goodall’s shift to environmental activism.
“We’ve stopped actually following the chimps in our studies, and just have one person a day to monitor them .” She says in the film. She thinks this pandemic is waking people up. The impact of environmental destruction has been brought into focus by the covid-19 outbreak, she says, as a result of practices that bring different species into closer proximity with each other, creating opportunities for viruses to jump from animals to humans.
Before the covid-19 pandemic shut borders, Goodall was travelling 300 days of the year, giving talks to packed theaters and meeting thousands of school children through her youth programme, Roots & Shoots, which runs in more than 60 countries.
“Wherever I go there are young people with shining eyes wanting to tell Dr Jane what they’re doing to make this a better world.” she says.“They’re influencing their parents and grandparents. Some of their parents may be in government; some of them may be in big corporations.”
Her message, one The Hope conveys clearly, is of the promise of collective action.“Hope depends on our taking action together soon. All of us, every single one of us, we’ve all got to do our bit.”

All the students in the hall stood up and craned (伸长) their necks to get a better look. In their eyes, Jin opera was quite something from the past.
They are not alone. It goes without saying that kids nowadays are much more familiar with popular music than traditional opera, which is why performing artist Wu Lingyun, together with his colleagues, goes to campuses to promote the art.
Wu Lingyun is best known for his role as Guan Gong, a general during the late Han Dynasty period. He began playing the role in 1985, at the age of 21, and has been associated with it ever since.
Wu was significantly influenced by his parents, both of whom are also famous Jin opera performers. With a natural talent for performing and great effort, Nu was soon recognized by audiences and later awarded the Chinese Drama Plum Blossom Award in 2000, the highest award for Chinese drama performing arts.
Given Wu’s considerable fame, one might think he would now prefer to enjoy a life of leisure. However, this is far from the case. Deep down, Wu has a big dream. He pictures a growing future for Jin opera. Wu expected more chances for more people to get to know about the art, hoping Jin opera could become a worldwide art.
Wu has also made some changes to the traditional art to bring it up-to-date. “Jin opera should keep pace with the times if we want to bring it back to life and get the young generation to accept it,” he says, “An art without life can never survive.”

The goal, executives say, is to enable parents to monitor their child’s connections without giving up teens’ autonomy (自主性). Named Family Center, the new suite of tools released Tuesday requires both caregiver and teen to be involved in.
“It allows parents to see who’s in their teen’s universe,” said Nona Farahnik, director of platform policy for Snap, the company that makes Snapchat. “It offers parents the ability to ask who someone might be, how they might know a contact, which improves those real-time conversations about who teens are talking to.”
Farahnik says Family Center is modeled on real-life parenting. “If your teen is headed to the mall, you might ask who they’re going with. ‘How do you know them? Are you guys on a sports team together? Do you go to school together?’” said Farahnik. “But you won’t be sitting there at the mall with them listening to their conversations.” Similarly, parents cannot see the content that their teen is sending or receiving on Snapchat. They can only view whom their child has communicated with in the past seven days. Snapchat is popular with young people, partially because messages on the platform disappear within 24 hours.
The company says it consulted with safety experts and academics and conducted focus groups with parents to develop Family Center and it plans to roll out more features in the coming months. The tool is only for parents of kids under 18.
With Family Center, Snap follows other social media platforms, including Instagram, which recently have advanced parental controls. By at least one survey, Snapchat is the second-most popular social network among teens. The first, TikTok, offers “Family Sharing,” which gives parents a few ways to limit the videos shown to their kids.
“I think these platforms want to show that they can take steps to protect kids, that they can self-regulate and that they’re capable of doing it themselves without getting the government involved,” said Irene Ly, policy counsel for Common Sense Media, which reviews apps, games and media for families.
1. Who are probably the potential users of Family Center?A.Children who love computer games. | B.Parents who worry about their children. |

The answer is probably yes. A study led by Matthew Carpenter, a professor at the Medical University of South Carolina found that e-smokers tend to smoke less and have increased quit attempts.
In the pilot study, Carpenter evaluated e-cigarettes in terms of usage, product preference, changes in smoking behaviors and nicotine exposure. Ninety subjects were evaluated:45 were randomized to use e-cigarettes, and 45 were randomized to a control group. Everyone was followed over a period of four months. The study was published in Cancer Epidemiology in November and is one of the few randomized studies in the U. S. to examine the effects of e-cigarettes.
Results showed that when smokers were given e-cigarettes, uptake was strong. Many participants rated the e-cigarettes similar to their usual product, suggesting that e-cigarettes might give smokers a suitable alternative to combustible(燃烧的)cigarettes. E-cigarettes offer significantly less exposure to harmful toxicants and therefore are safer. People using e-cigarettes throughout the study smoked an average of 37 percent fewer cigarettes, as compared to those in the control group, showing a positive effect when making the switch and potentially serving as a tool to help smokers quit.
That's good news for Carpenter and his colleagues. Smoking is the leading cause of cancer and has a negative impact on the effectiveness of cancer treatments. People who quit smoking, regardless of their ages, have substantial gains in life expectancy(预期寿命)compared with those who continue to smoke.
Carpenter cautions that while e-cigarettes may help people smoke less or even quit, they are not for everyone. "It is important to protect non-smokers, particularly adolescents, from starting any nicotine-containing product. "
More than 1,500 varieties of e-cigarettes are now available, including different looks, high-tech power settings and many flavors. All these make them more appealing to kids. In fact, e-cigarettes are more popular than conventional cigarettes among youth. "All these should raise our alarm bells," he said.
E-cigarettes were only recently regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. Largely manufactured overseas, the quality control process varies, he says. Without enough information to answer the long-term public health issues of e-cigarettes, researchers like Carpenter are aware of the importance of further studies on the latest tobacco trends. Combustible cigarettes have been around for many decades. E-cigarettes have not, and the science has a lot of questions left to answer, he said.
1. Which of the following is TRUE about Professor Carpenter's experiment on e-cigarettes?A.The test groups include conventional smokers, e-smokers and non-smokers. |

As the older population desires to stay in their homes, effectively designed robots are needed to help make this demand a safer and more sustainable(可持续的)option. Another change in health care is that robots have already been used in over 20,000 operations. Surgical(外科的)robots like the da Vinci Surgical Systems are great examples of cutting-edge robotic technology. Besides, instead of going to a brick building to see a physician, patients will be checked by robots.
At home, household robots can help people save time. You can schedule a warm meal to be ready when you return from work. Robotic cookers can steam, fry, slow, cook and bake as long as you set them up. These robots are likely to develop into more advanced versions in the upcoming years and could change the look and feel of our homes.
As we know, a single teacher doesn’t have the ability to meet the needs of personalized learning for every student in a classroom. This is where computer-based learning comes into play; it doesn’t replace the teacher but allows students to learn at their own pace. Robots will continue to boost personalized learning. The human-like robot NAO works to form bonds with students and comes with senses of natural interaction, from listening, speaking, moving and connecting with students.
Today, robots of all types are being designed to reduce workload, complement human skill sets and enable professionals to focus on more important activities. Robots are meant to make human life easier and offer a more comfortable future. As technology advances and becomes more affordable, it is expected to see more changes and more industries embracing robots and all they can do to boost our standard of Living.
