New Orleans
In the 19th century, slaves gathered on Sundays to play drums, dance, and sing in Congo Square. Those lively rhythms of Africa ran head on with the sounds of Europe to create jazz, a typical American art form that has inspired generations of Americans and spread around the globe. But this isn’t suit-wearing, head-nodding, polite jazz. New Orleans jazz sweeps you off your feet and makes you jump and clap and sing along.
Chicago
Large numbers of African Americans left the South in search of better opportunities during 1916~1970 and Chicago attracted scores of these people, who brought with them the sound of the Mississippi River. Here, it changed into something sad and symphonic: blues. Blues was not born in Chicago, but it was here that it found a new voice and began to spread its message around the world.
Memphis
Memphis is the birthplace of rock and roll. It was here in Sun Studios in the summer of 1951 that Ike Turner and his band the Delta Cats recorded “Rocket 88”, widely regarded as the first rock and roll song. But, like so many great things, it happened by accident the guitarist’s loudspeaker broke down during the recording, creating a unique guitar sound that would become a hallmark of the music. People didn’t know how to classify it, but they knew they loved it. The rest is history.
New York City
New York is one of the world’s greatest cities where you can listen to all kinds of music. But to experience a true New York state of mind, you have to leave the shiny towers and Broadway shows of Manhattan and head to Harlem, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens to explore the city’s hip-hop history.

Bottoms
The high school comedy is very strange and funny. It’s a smart new comedy. Ayo Edebiri and Rachel Sennott play unpopular best friends who start a fight club in hopes of attracting the cheerleaders of their dreams. Bottoms was co-written by Sennott and Emma Seligman, who also directs. They previously collaborated on the movie Shiva Baby.
Blue Beetle
It is a true-blue surprise. In the great new superhero film Blue Beetle, Xolo Mariduena plays Jaime Reyes, a young Mexican-American man who comes across a frightening bug-like alien artifact (神器) that connects to him and gives him superpowers. It may seem like just another story about a hero, but-centering the film on a Latin family changes the familiar mode in ways big and small.
Strays
It leads the pack for rated dog comedies. In the new comedy Strays, four talking dogs have an incredible/unbelievable journey. Reggie (voiced by Will Ferrell) doesn’t realize his owner Doug (played by Will Forte) is going to abandon him on the streets. But when Doug’s intentions become clear, Reggie’s motivation shifts from a reunion to revenge (复仇). Strays’ voice cast also features Jamie Foxx, Isla Fisher and Randall Park.
Golda
The movie describes a key moment in Israeli history. It is a story of Golda Meir, Israel’s first and only female prime minister. But it only covers a period of fewer than three weeks. The film follows Meir — played by a nearly unrecognizable Helen Mirren — as she spends the tense 19 days of the 1973. The conflict in 1973 resulted in heavy Israeli losses, and finally, Meir gave up her position of prime minister.
1. In what way is Emma Seligman different from Sennott?A.He’s the director of Bottoms. | B.He is the writer of Bottoms. |
C.He plays a role in Bottoms. | D.He once started a fight club. |
A.The journey is very difficult. | B.Other dogs want to abandon him. |

The Grinch (2000)
This is a Christmas must-watch and one of Jim Carrey’s best performances. It was also originally a children’s book written by Dr Seuss, which I would recommend reading! It’s the story of a green monster who wants to ruin Christmas but who in the end discovers the power of love and generosity. It sounds cheesy and cliché, but I promise it’s a great film with plenty of laughs along the way.
Love Actually (2003)
While this is not a personal favorite of mine, people in the UK absolutely love this film. It has a star-studded cast, featuring actors and actresses such as Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman. It might be a little difficult to follow as there are lots of different sub-plots, so I recommend watching a dubbed version (配音版) in your native language. However, the heart-warming elements of the film make it worth watching.
Home Alone (1990)
This blockbuster is one of my favorite films of all time and I would watch it all year round if I could. It tells the story of a boy, Kevin, who is left alone in his house when his large family forget to take him on vacation with them. While the family are away, burglars try to rob the house and Kevin must protect his home by setting traps. The trips, falls and traps will have you laughing out loud as you watch a 10-year-old boy outsmart two grown men.
Miracle on 34th Street (1994)
You can’t have Christmas in an English-speaking country without watching this film. It’s not funny like Home Alone or The Grinch, but it is incredibly touching. It’s about a man who claims to be Santa, but nobody believes him except a lawyer and a little girl. The storyline may seem a little childish but you can enjoy it at any age. I cry every time I watch it and I’m 21!
1. In which movie can you see Jim Carrey’s wonderful performance?A.The Grinch. | B.Love Actually. | C.Home Alone. | D.Miracle on 34th Street. |
A.It’s one of the author’s favorite films. |

B.Both films are only fit for children. |

Magdalen College Old Library
Oxford University is famous for its academic programs, but it’s also known for its outstanding libraries that are said to include more than 11 million books. The Old Library at Magdalen College is the crown jewel of the university’s library system. It contains more than 20,000 rare books and manuscripts. Nearly all of these volumes were published before 1800.

The library at the Delft University of Technology was constructed in 1997, which has more than 862,000 books, 16,000 magazine subscriptions and its own museum. But it will only take a glance to be attracted, as it is a sight to remember. The building itself exists beneath the ground, so you can’t really see the actual library. What makes it interesting is the roof, which is a grassy hill.
Trinity College Library
The Trinity College Library in Dublin is the oldest library in Ireland, founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I. It contains more than 200,000 of the library’s oldest books. Treasures of the library’s extensive collection include a rare copy of the 1916 proclamation of the Irish Republic and a beautiful 15th century harp (竖琴).
Joe and Rika Mansueto Library
Opened in 2011, the Joe and Rika Mansueto Library at the University of Chicago is designed with a grand glass roof, perfect for staring out when you are tired.
