Once there was a little girl Lily who was very friendly and popular in her class. She was friends with everyone in her class. She felt very happy that she had so many friends at school.
On Friendship Day, her class had an event, in which everyone had to give gifts to their best friends. Lily was really looking forward to the Friendship Day because she wanted gifts from her friends. However, she was the only one who hadn’t received any gifts. She felt sad and cried a lot.
Everyone came and tried to comfort (安慰) her but each one only stayed for a short time. This was what Lily had done so many times to others.
When she got home, her mother saw her sad face and asked her why she was sad. “Where can I find true friends?” Lily asked. Her mother was surprised. Then she asked Lily what had happened in school. Her mother comforted her and said, “You cannot buy friends with a smile or a few good words. If you really want true friends, you will have to give them real time and love. For a true friend you must always get along with them, in good times and bad.”
Lily replied (回答), “But I want to be friends with everyone!”

This is a story about two teenagers who were direct opposites but were inseparable.
No one could really understand how Mack and Zack could be such good friends. They were direct opposites in every way—from the top of their heads to the tips of their toes. That is to say, they have not the least similarities. They were labeled the inseparable by anyone who knew both of them or their common friends.
They first met when they were in Grade One. It was not one of those dramatic meetings but ordinary and boring. Both were eyeing the second seat in the middle row in the classroom.
Both rushed for the chair but another giant classmate put himself into it. So they looked at each other, shrugged their shoulders indifferently and placed themselves on either side of the giant. However, the class teacher immediately rearranged their seating positions. As fate would have it, Mack and Zack found themselves seated beside each other.
Physically, Mack was thin and long. He looked lack of nutrition (营养)but actually he quite could eat. On the other hand, Zack was fat and strong and ate like a bird.
Mack was a bookworm and a star student whereas Zack was an easy-going student who struggled to go through his schoolwork. Mack enjoyed teaching Zack and Zack found himself responding well to Mack's teaching.
Mack was a dreamer and was quiet and cool, unlike Zack who was talkative and outgoing. Mack listened while Zack chattered. Mack could be seen laughing quietly with Zack playing around and the life and soul of any gathering.
Despite their differences, there was an invisible harmony (和谐)between them. Anyone who saw all this couldn't help but wonder how it happened that between these two teenagers there was a silent unspoken understanding. That's all because of Mack's selfless deed that touched Zack.

Nick was new, so he didn’t have many friends. One day the headmaster announced that it was the basketball season, so they needed to practice after school till 6. Nick smiled. He loved playing basketball.
Later that day it was time to go to the first practice of the season. There were other guys and they all sat together talking, but Nick just sat there and waited. “Alright boys! Line up and tell me your names,” the coach demanded. “Ricky, Derick, Josh, Dan, Nick.” they answered, one after another. Practice went on and the coach began to try out the boys. Ricky and his friends did really good. But the coach ran out of time before he could try out Nick.
The next day, Ricky and his friends came up to Nick and told him he wasn’t good enough though they had never seen him play. Nick said nothing. Soon enough it was time for Nick to try out. “We will start with free throws(自由投篮,即罚球),” the coach said. Nick stood on the free throw line and then shot. He didn’t miss one shot. The boys were amazed. Ricky was mad because they were all giving the attention to Nick. The coach informed Nick that he made the team. All the boys were congratulating him.
Nick was happy that he was on the team and it was a good way to make friends. Ricky just stood there and looked at him in anger. Ricky always got the attention but now Nick did because he’s an amazing player. The next day when Nick went to lunch, he sat by himself and the next thing he knew was that the table he was sitting at was filled with all the basketball players except Ricky.
Soon enough it was time for their first game. The game was a close one ... There were 5 seconds left and Ricky had the ball. Everyone was blocked except Nick. “I'm open. I’m open,” Nick said over and over.

It was not out of envy, because he got the prize and I did not, that I quarreled with Coretti this morning. No, it was not out of envy. Still I was in the wrong. The teacher had placed him beside me, and I was writing in my copy-book when he jogged my elbow and made me blot and soil the monthly story, Blood of Romagna. I got angry, and said a rude word to him.
He replied, with a smile, “I did not do it on purpose.”
I should have believed him, because I know him; but it displeased me that he should smile, and I thought: “ Oh! Now that he has had a prize, he has grown arrogant and over-proud!” and a little while afterwards, to revenge myself, I gave him jog which made him spoil his page.
Then, Coretti’s face flushed with anger, “You did that on purpose,” he said to me, and raised his hand. The teacher saw it; he drew it back. But he added: “I shall wait for you outside!”
I felt ill at ease; my anger had eventually broken out; I regretted. No; Coretti could not have done it intentionally. He is good, I thought. I recalled how I had seen him in his own home; how he had worked and helped his sick mother; and then how heartily he had been welcomed in my house; and how he had pleased my father. What would I not have given; not to have said that word to him; not to have insulted him! And I thought of the advice that my father had given to me: “Have you done wrong?---“Yes.”---“Then beg his pardon.” But this I did not dare to do; I was ashamed of myself. I looked at him out of the corner of my eye, and I saw his coat ripped on the shoulder ---perhaps because he had carried too much wood,--and I felt that I loved him. I said to myself, “Courage!” But the words, “pardon me,” stuck in my throat.
He looked at me from time to time, but seemed more grieved than angry. And I looked crossly at him, to show him that I was not afraid.
He repeated, “We shall meet outside! ”And I said, “We shall meet outside!” But I was thinking of what my father had once said to me, “If you are in the wrong, defend yourself, but do not fight.”
And I said to myself, “I will defend myself, but I will not fight.” But I was discontented, and I no longer listened to the master.

Fortune Cookie Friends
Jenny frowned (皱眉)as she helped her mother and father set out the cooking supplies in the shiny steel kitchen. Her family had just moved here from San Francisco, having bought a small restaurant, which was set to open in the next few days.
“Moving here was a dumb idea," Jenny complained mostly to herself
"What's that?” Her mother asked, opening a box and lifting out several pots.
"Nothing," Jenny mumbled (咕哝).The girl had been angry about the move, but her parents had made the decision and were now too busy getting ready for the grand opening to listen to her complaints.
The first few days at her new school hadn't been easy, either. She found it hard to talk to people she didn't know, and it seemed like the students hadn't even noticed her. Jenny sighed and got back to washing dishes.
On the day of the grand opening, Jenny's parents were all smiles, welcoming customers into the restaurant, brightly decorated in gold and red. Even Jenny was in a good mood as she rushed around, seating guests, handing out menus, and pouring tall glasses of water. This was a big day for her family.
At one of the tables sat a family with two daughters who were about Jenny's age. As she filled their glasses, Jenny realized the twins were in her class. Jenny ducked her head down so her long hair covered her face, and she turned away from the table.
Jenny's mother found her soon after, in the kitchen loading the dishwasher.
"Honey, what are you doing back here? We need you out front with the customers."
"Mom, I don't want to be out there. There are kids from school!"
"So?" her mother asked. "That's good! Go to take them some fortune cookies and say hello!" She said to Jenny, pointing at the fortune cookies paper which read: “Many friends are found with a single."

From the first week of high school, my best friend, Tina, was always going out with the popular girls. At first I thought, “It’s okay, she’s just making new friends. But soon I realized that Tina wasn’t interested in me anymore. I’d lost my best friend. It really hurt me.
One day, I told Tina that we should stop pretending to be friends when we really weren’t anymore. I wasn’t trying to make her mad, but she was. After that, Tina started talking about me behind my back, telling people that I was bad. Some of our friends were on her side. I felt like she was taking them away from me.
The more I thought about it, the angrier I got. Finally, I took up a picture of Tina and drew lines on her face. I wrote “I hate this person” across the bottom. And then I did something I’ll always regret: I put it on a website which I thought was popular. I thought people would see it, and it felt good to work off the anger. A week later, Tina’s mom saw the picture. She called my mom, who made me take it off the website right away. However, it was already too late. Lots of people had seen it, and I was in a lot of trouble. That whole day, I felt terrible. I had to say sorry to Tina face to face. She said she accepted my apology, but I felt she was still angry with me.
Posting that picture was one of the worst decisions I had ever made.

Quiet Virtue: The Conscientious
The everyday signs of conscientiousness(认真尽责)—being punctual,, careful in doing work, sef- disciplined. and scrupulous(一丝不苟的) in attending to responsibilities—are typical characteristics of the model organizational citizen, the people who keep things running as they should. They follow the rules, help out, and are concerned about the people they work with. It's the conscientious worker who helps newcomers or updates people who return after an absence, who gets to work on time and never abuses sick leaves, who always gets things done on deadline.
Conscientiousness is a key to success in any field. In studies of job performance, outstanding effectiveness for almost all jobs, from semi-skilled labor to sales and management, depends on conscientiousness. Among sales representatives for a large American car manufacturer, those who were most conscientious had the largest volume of sales.
Conscientiousness also offers a buffer(缓冲) against the threat of job loss in today's constantly changing market, because employees with this quality are among the most valued. For the sales representatives, their level of conscientiousness mattered almost as much as their sales in determining who stayed on.
But conscientiousness in the absence of social skills can lead to problems. Since conscientious people demand so much of themselves, they can hold other people to their own standards, and so be overly judgmental when others don't show the same high levels of model behavior. Factory workers who were extremely conscientious, for example, tended to criticize co-workers even about failures that seemed unimportant to those they criticized, which damaged their relationships.
When conscientiousness takes the form of living up to expectations, it can discourage creativity. Success in creative professions like art or advertising calls for a balance between wild ideas and conscientiousness. Without enough conscientiousness to follow through, people become mere dreamers, with nothing to show for their imaginativeness.
