Employers today tend to hire students who truly made the most of their time on campus. Getting involved in an extracurricular club could be one of your highlights.
Media & Publication Club
It focuses on publishing a campus newspaper, creating a website, or writing ads. The skill sets required to successfully create media today are incredibly varied. You may have a passion for the written word or love graphic design. Whatever the case, you are likely to find your place within the club.
Academic Club
This club is among the most popular on campus, which can be a great benefit to a degree-seeker, because they allow you to connect with other students in the same major and often even to network with professionals from industries in which you plan to seek employment after graduation.
Community Service Club
If you are eager to make a difference to the world, the club focusing on serving others might be the perfect match for you. This club is intended for children, seniors, underserved populations, animals, the environment, and so on. If you have a desire to help, the opportunity to serve likely exists on your campus.
Sports & Recreation Club
If you are passionate about the sport you’re pursuing, it does not matter if you aren’t playing at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) level. Their modest headquarters in the back garden of their home looked out on the landscape that was peppered with many complex nests of the weaver birds (织布鸟).
For more than 25 years, the company’s location has not changed and the number of the team member has rarely been more than two. But in the words of one distinguished Zimbabwean scholar, Weaver Press has “quietly shaped post-independence Zimbabwean literature”. “Publishing in Zimbabwe has always mainly focused on textbooks, with very few exceptions,” McCartney says. “Weaver was one of those exceptions. We focused on literary fiction and academic nonfiction and in doing so, we tried to put Zimbabwe on the map — not because we’ve published hundreds of books, but because we presented a complex and sweeping picture of Zimbabwe that may otherwise not have existed to the outside world.”
One of the first books Weaver published was The Stone Virgins, a novel by Yvonne Vera that won the Macmillan Prize for African Adult Fiction in 2002. “Fiction is an important form of truth-telling, because a good writer will look at a situation from many different points of view — you don’t want the social history of a country to come out of a single description,” Staunton says.
Among the most successful writers Weaver has worked with is No Violet Bulawayo, author of Glory, shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2022. Bulawayo stresses Staunton’s editing skill. “Her sharp eye, intelligence and honesty helped me define my own ethics (道德标准) around reading and editing mine and the work of others, which I especially needed when I was a young writer,”she says. Despite the praise, Staunton says she doesn’t want to be center stage. “Editors are backroom people, like stagehands, doing everything they can to push the author to be front and center.”

In 1954, he sent four members of his staff(员工) around the United States looking for ideas at establishing amusement parks. The only idea on which they found general agreement was that Disney was insane. Owners of other parks said it was impossible to succeed without dangerous rides or using methods that were at least a little dishonest. However, Disney went on with his plans for a clean, safe park, which he decided to call Disneyland.
At last Disneyland was built and opened to the public. Very quickly, it came to be regarded as one of the wonders of the modern world.

He never tired of visiting the park himself, of expanding it or improving it. Even today, Disneyland is kept spotless (无污点的).Every night, every street and walkway is washed, and workers with knives get down on their hands and knees to scrape out (刮去) chewing gum dropped by visitors.

Famadihana-dance with the dead
A funeral(葬礼)tradition followed by the Malagasy tribe in Madagascar, people dance with dead bodies as part of the Famadihana custom. After bringing bodies of ancestors from their burial place, they re-wrap them in fresh cloth and dance around the tomb to live music. The ritual is followed once in seven years, but has been in the decline.
Venezuela-don't show up on time
Venezuela are just like Indians! Reaching on time is considered rude in Venezuela and it is recommended to reach at least 15 minutes later than the scheduled time. Guests who reach on time are looked down upon as being too eager and greedy. Well, Venezuela should take some cue from Indians!
India-throw the baby for good luck
This custom is mostly followed in Karnataka where newborn babies are thrown off the 50-feet high above Sri Santeswar temple. The babies are obviously caught by the family in a cloth. Couples who are blessed with a baby take a vow at the temple following this 500-year-old tradition, which is believed to bring good luck to the babies.
Scotland-just blacken the bride
Having some fun before the wedding is great, but this pre-wedding custom in Scotland doesn't seem to have a lot of fun for the bride. The custom involves throwing eggs, spoilt milk and basically, all things disgusting at her. The "blackened bride" is then taken around the town. The custom is a metaphor for the tough life that the bride might have to go through after the wedding. (Marilda by Roald Dahi), take us on thrilling adventures (Divergent by Veronica Roth) and even introduce us to tragedy (悲剧) (The Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson). They’re as formative as anything else in our young lives, and sometimes they’re the first place we encounter larger-than-life ideas, thinking of the lasting cultural import of To Kill a Mockingbird. In The Magic Words, Cheryl B. Klein, sets out to inform would-be writers on how great novels for young readers work.
The market for YA (young-adult) novels is booming: sales in the children’s and YA sector have been neck and neck with those of adult books in recent years, and adult authors including Meg Wolitzer and Carl Hiaasen are getting in on the phenomenon. The Magic Words aims to be a master class. And in the era of promoted self-help sensations like Marie Kondo and Brenie Brown, The Magic Words is of a piece.
Klein deconstructs the seemingly obvious (clear plot-lines, sympathetic characters) to reveal the technical significance of some beloved classics. L. M. Montgomery surely didn’t regard Anne of Green Gables as a cash-in endeavor. But for those who want to best-seller writers, Anne is instructive: what’s timeless and broadly appealing about Anne—her teenage heart and impulses (冲动) is what to examine. Once you understand that, Klein encourages you to get personal: What makes you ideal to write your story? And what does it mean to the reader?
On the latter question, The Magic Words is more than a handbook. It is also a timely social commentary on the responsibility YA writers have to young adults. They must start with an awareness of their readers—not only their age but also how they might connect with the issues, like bullies or tolerance that the characters face. The narratives we tell young readers can influence how they understand and value the world around them. The magic isn’t in the words: it’s in how the words come together to reflect and confirm the realities of a diverse young-adult experience.
